Arturo had a hard time swallowing the lump of dried bread in his throat. He hadn't actually hadn't thought she wouldn't want to continue on with them. He laughed at himself. He normally thought ten turns ahead in any game, and here he was just poleaxed by a little slip of a girl. His brother's would never forgive him if they found out.

“I would never throw you to the wolves. Are you sure though, about seeking employment around here?” he asked. Not exactly sure why he wanted to keep her near him, and he really didn't want to explore those thoughts. He frowned when she spoke of her headache. Without thought, he set his plate aside and took her head in his massive hand. Hand large and strong enough to crush a man's skull, but he gently pressed his fingers to her temples and began massaging.

Unseen by his master, Sean's jaw dropped. Never had he seen his master act so gently toward anyone. The sentiment was echoed by many of the men who were observing their lord's strange behaviour.

((snickers... absolutely love Sean's reaction.))

Startled by the sudden human contact, Trinity's heart raced. Then when his warm, rough hands touched the sides of her face. The rough calluses strangely calming as he began working out the headache. It was holding the headache at bay. Pushing it bit by bit towards the far edges of her mind. "Now that is good. Don't stop," she whispered. Why had she ever been afraid of this man? Arturo was very much a good person she could trust. Surely. Otherwise he wouldn't be caring for her well-being so tenderly.

It wasn't sure her headache that was going away. All her muscles were relaxing. Trinity realized she was regaining that balance that she had had while training. It would be very easy to control her abilities at this moment. All thanks to Arturo. "I'm not sure about anything at the moment..." Yep, she could live with this. But she had been a burden on others her entire life. An orphan for the village to raise. Someone the nuns had to train. The forest wasn't her home. Somewhere out here, she had been born. It was out here she would find and make a life for herself.

((Okay, how do you want to proceed? Do you want to force her to come along kicking and screaming? Or willingly? Or do you want her to find work at a village... and then have war reunite them?))

(Ooo...I like that idea, have them part ways here, and in a few years during a war they meet up again? Maybe like five years or so?)

Arturo smiled as Trinity relaxed under his ministrations. As she seemed to fall asleep, he bent down and scooped her up in his arms. She weighed almost nothing. Looking down into her sleepy face, he felt something inside him shift. With purposeful strides, he entered his tent and lay her on his cot. Covering her up, he went back outside. He motioned to Sean.

“Whatever she wants, you will help her get,” he said handing the boy a bag of coins. “We will continue on our way in the morning. You will see her settled and meet back up with us on our way back to the capital.”

Sean said nothing but nodded. Taking the coins, he pocketed them.

Arturo grabbed a blanket and settled down for the night.

((Let's make it two years. Not long enough for her to learn much about the greater empire, but enough to learn the basic culture of the village and nearby countryside. Also, would be great if he was all she could think about...))

Trinity couldn't move. Her whole body screamed for peace and so in sleep she was trapped. Nightmares slowly crept into her consciousness, of bandits and horse hooves. Blood was everywhere. Still, she slept. Then Arturo entered her dreams, his very presence chasing away the shadows. His kind eyes and gentle hands. Still, she slept. Finally darkness again took over. At one point, she became aware that her muscles were spasming from the strain they had undergone. Still, she slept. Slowly, eventually, her muscles rested. Her mind finished processing the events of the day before and slowed. She slept soundly and deeply.

((Do you want her to wake after he leaves or before?))

(lets go with after, makes for a less “mushy” scene....and allows Arturo to keep his “man card”)

The next morning dawned quietly and quickly. With years of practice, camp was down and the men were ready to ride before the first real rays of sunshine touched the soldiers. Softly, so as not to wake her, Arturo peeked in on Trinity. She was beautiful, but he knew if he took her with him, even under the reason of her water skills, she would hate him. She would loose that sweetness and become like every other woman he'd ever known.

Unable to help himself, he leaned down and pressed a swift kiss on her forehead. He would never forget her, and he hoped she might think on him with some sort of fondness while she wrangled a parcel of children and knitted her future husband's clothing.

He slipped from the tent and looked at Sean. The boy nodded at the silent message. Arturo mounted his horse and with the remainder of his men, headed back to the capital and his real life.

((Makes sense. Love the sentiment growing there.))

Two years had passed in a swirl of activities. Trinity discovered much to her pleasure that she had skills that had lain dormant. She spent her days learning alchemy at the local herbalist shop. Learning which plants and other random things combined with what to make helpful (or harmful) potions was fun for her. It gave her a place to keep her hands busy.

Then at night she would settle in front of the fireplace at the inn, playing a small guitar or flute. If the guitar, then she sang. The songs were songs she had known in the forest. She had since learned that not many people ventured into The Great Forest, giving it as a haven to the wildlife. Only when the villages sent traders outside did news travel between the two worlds.

As much as she yearned to know more in her quiet moments, she never pursued knowledge about either the bandits or the silver-haired hero that had helped her. Her own hair, almost white with tinges of the lightest brown on the ends had caused no small amount of curiosity among her those in this village. It was when a little girl had first piped up, "She had brown in her hair," that had transformed the people from silent, distant respect to a more jolly and friendly group. It made her wonder.

Arturo sat on his horse, letting the animal plod along. He was tired, worn out, sore and just a little ticked off. Not to mention filthy and very hungry. He looked over the small group of men trailing around him, of the seventy-five he'd started the week out with only seven remained. It should have been a quick suppression of a small rebel uprising, a quick job. This time it had been different. The small rebel group, had actually been an enemy army looking to annex land that wasn't theirs. Arturo and his small contingent, at least what was left, barely survived.

He hated sounding retreat, but there was no shame in running from a fight that would only get them killed. They had ridden hard for several hours until the horses themselves nearly fell out from under them. He had allowed an hour break and then this slow plodding. He knew they would reach the next army outpost by midnight. There he could refresh, eat and send a message to the capital and gather a larger army. He'd be damned if those fools would take over his country, even a small slice of it without a fight. He also had to figure out who in his organization was feeding information to the enemy.

It wasn't the enemy that had surprised him, it was the efficiency of their attack, as if they had known exactly where and how they were going to be entering the small valley. Only a handful; of men had known that information, not that a smart general couldn't figure it out, but it still was too convenient.

As they entered the area that separated the mountains from the forest, his thoughts turned to Trinity. He found himself thinking of her as he drifted off to sleep some nights. He had never asked and Sean had never supplied the information as to where she'd ended up. He had no doubt she'd married some local tradesman, maybe a smith and had at least one or two little ones hanging on her skirts.

He sighed in relief as he saw the walls of the city start rising on the horizon. It wouldn't be much longer until he was clean and well-fed.

Arturo frowned as they plodded into the city. The gates were wide open and masses of people crowed the streets, more then he'd ever seen in a city this size. It made him wonder what had been happening out here on the frontier that was not being sent back to the capital. With a motion to Sean and the others, he kicked his poor horse into a faster pace and headed toward the garrison. He would have answers this night.

Evening was coming. Putting aside her work, she stood up and dusted off the apron she wore. Untying it and hanging it by the workroom door, she stepped out into the main area. The lady she worked for looked up and grinned, "Trinity, I don't know how you do it. The potions I make work as they always have, but yours work faster. Just had another person tell me not to lose you."

Grinning, Trinity responded, "I am not sure what I do differently Susan. Must be their imaginations." Susan shook her head as Trinity headed out the door. Walking along the street, she stretched her arms and began to pick through the songs she planned to do tonight. She was trying to write some if she could. It was not an easy feat as that was something she had not done before. However it amused others. Reaching the inn she worked at, she headed on inside. People were already slowly shuffling in from the long day.

Slipping into the kitchen, she stepped into the small closet she called home. It was a small space with a cot taking up one side. Her things all fit underneath it. On the oppose wall, just a foot away, was a shelve full of spices. She knew each and every scent too. Changing from her work dress into a nicer dress she kept for performances, she slipped out back into the kitchen. The head cook kept a pitcher of water for her, covered and with small drops of a potion she made. It allowed her to sing longer before growing thirsty. She would eat afterwards.

Stepping back into the main room while drinking down the cup. She set it beside her at the fire hearth. Pulling up a stool, she sat back against the rough stone walls. The warmth easing any tension she had. Picking up the small guitar, she began strumming slowly and softly. She would let this piece be the opener. Her singing and more loud music to come afterwards.

Sean found himself at loose ends for the evening. Arturo had let those who has survived the attack find whatever solace they could find in whatever activities they could find. Sean wanted to scrub clean the visions of the battle that day, so he wandered to the closest tavern and stepped up to the bar. Luckily for him he had grown into his lanky frame in the last few years. He was no longer a to tall, overly skinny kid. He was a young man who was filing out a respectable frame. As he ordered a whiskey, he was grateful that the girls actually looked at him now. He took his drink and slouched into an empty table near a roughly placed stage area. He'd searched out this tavern because they guys at the garrison had spoken highly of the lovely young woman who sang at night.

Sean needed something like that. Unlike his fellow soldiers, wenching, while fun, wasn't something he took lightly. Matter of fact, he'd been courting a young lady back at home and was nearly ready to ask for her hand as soon as he officially gained his spurs.

He took his shot of whiskey and let the amber liquid burn down his throat. He motioned to the serving girl to bring him an ale. As he brought it to his lips, the singer stepped out onto the “stage” and he nearly dropped his drink.

“Trinity!” he called not sure what possessed him to draw her attention to him.

((He has grown out fine indeed. I would date him. Erm, not trying to be overly picky... but... she isn't on a stage.))

Looking up from where she was strumming the guitar, she looked at Sean surprised. Then recognition lit her eyes. "Sean! It has been a couple years. Those of you who knew me when I first arrived, this is one of the friends who helped me get on my feet." She smiled, and went into her first song with lyrics. Her voice lifting and pushing away the stresses of life, she let her guitar and her own voice turn into one accord.

It didn't take much to have people sighing or laughing as she desired. With her music she controlled their emotions and did her best to make them all positive. She switched to a flute, the signal that she had only two songs left. Playing an exciting piece that had feet tapping and hands clapping, she kept them spirited. Then she played her traditional ending song. It's notes filtering full of longing for the one she dreamed of at night. Finishing for the evening, she stood for the first time from her stool and bowed.

It had long been established that if anyone wanted to tip her, that they could do so at the bar. So well wishers wouldn't be burdening her too long that way. She politely talked to a few people, mostly regulars, while making her way to Sean. She hoped that she had provided three hours of delightful entertainment. As soon as she sat next to him, a serving maid brought a bowl of stew and set it in front of her. She turned excitedly to Sean and asked, "How are you? You have really filled out."

(sorry....)

Sean smiled as Trinity sat next to him. His face turning red at her compliments. “I have been doing well, though I think trouble is coming this way,” he said his eyes going serious for a moment. “Lord Arturo is at the garrison now sending messages back to the capital to pull reinforcements to the borderlands.”

He didn't want to speak about such dark things so he forced a smile. “Enough about my gloomy world, how have you been doing since we last parted ways? I didn't realize you were such a beautiful singer. The men at the garrison recommended this place because of you.”

He ordered another ale from the waitress, looking at Trinity to see if she would like a drink as well. He debated about bringing Arturo down to the tavern, it would only be a matter of time before he was dragged here by one of the commanders, so their meeting would be inevitable.

((Please don't feel bad. I didn't want to say anything in case you might feel that way.))

She felt her heart quicken at the mention of Arturo. Biting a lip only a moment, she blushed and looked down. Then looked back up, eyes full of questions. "Is he well? What trouble did you all run into? If he is hurt, I have practiced using water to heal with. I am much better at it now and won't douse anyone quite so badly as before." She paused speechlessly. Did she want to see him that bad that she would ask endless questions like a child? Evidently so.

Looking at Sean in concern, she asked, "And you. Your face has strain in it. Are you okay?"

Sean smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring way. “We were attacked badly this morning. It is only by the grace of the gods that the few of us who are alive, are alive. That and Arturo's quick thinking.” He smiled at the tumbling questions.

He was sure if Arturo knew he was here, the questions would be just as numerous, even if they weren't spoken out loud. He doubted anyone else had noticed, but Sean lived closer to his liege then the rest of the men, he'd seen the slight change this woman had wrought on the prince. “He is well. I am sure if he would be happy to know you won't soak him the next time you try to heel him. If it weren't so late, I would offer to escort you for a visit.”

He smiled wryly. “Not that he'll be sleeping much tonight.”

(Oh dear, I'm sorry.)

"We could surprise him!" She spoke without thinking. Trinity shook her head at herself and grinned a shy smile. "That is, if it is alright with you. You look pretty tired. How about this, bring him to the herbalist park at the edge of town. It is a beautiful place full of plants, decorative ponds and pools, with branching trees overhead. I work there during the day or at the herbalist shop. I could arrange to be in her park and surprise him." She gave him her best puppy dog eyes. Something the kids had taught her.

But in the back of her mind, she was worrying. There was definite strain on Sean's face. That they had had such trouble. At so close a call. It meant that trouble was brewing. If there was any way she could help, she wanted to. She would have to discuss that with the herbalist in the morning and see what others in her shoes might consider doing.

Sean laughed at her expression. A full bodied, soul freeing laugh. He was impressed with the woman she had become. She was more sure of herself. He nodded. “Very well,” he said. “I will try my best to bring him to you tomorrow.” He rose and bowed to her formally. “If you will excuse me, it has been a very long terrible day. Always your servant, Mistress Trinity.”

Winking at her, he left her sitting alone, his steps lighter then they had been when he entered the small tavern. He just hoped the prince didn't kill him tomorrow.

Watching him leave, she felt a part of her heart fall. Old friends were few and far between. But there was always tomorrow. She turned to her soup and carefully finished it off. It was, as always, very good and she savored every bite. Tasting all the different ingredients that went into it, she smiled. The cook was testing out some new versions. Successfully from what she could tell. With a light step, she picked up her bowl and retired to the kitchen. The tips that had come in all went to her. A fair trade considering that business had more than tripled when she started working here.

Moving on into her room, she settled on her bed with the door partially open. That way the light from the kitchen spilled in. Settling in with a book, she tried to read where she had left off. A few minutes later, she gave up. There was no way should could concentrate. Arturo filled her mind. He was so close! In this very city. It was a restless soul that turned into bed later that night. Her dreams absorbed by the man who had become a hero to her.

Arturo was tired, so that made him a bit cranky. At least he thought he was cranky, those around him thought him a down right ass. He'd finally crashed around dawn only to get up just before lunch. He wanted to move on his battle plans, but he knew at the moment he could only wait. He still wasn't sure how he'd allowed Sean to talk him into going to a park. Something about it being good for his well being. This town, he knew, was known for the simple beauty and strange healing powers of it's gardens. He figured it couldn't hurt to visit one.

“Why couldn't we have gone to the one by the garrison?” he asked as Sean led him into town. Okay,so he sounded like a whiny child, but he didn't care. Sean, while having been his squire, was also his dearest friend. The boy had always looked out for him, even when he'd done stupid things because of his infatuation with Trinity.

“Because the one I am taking you too is supposed to have one of the most beautiful and rarest flowers to ever bloom,” Sean said ignoring the complaint in his liege’s voice. He was proud of himself for that description of Trinity. “Here we are.” He began scanning to see if he could spot Trinity before Arturo bolted.

Trinity was kneeling beside a calm, clear pool of crystal water. It was one of the few that was free enough of small sentiment that she could communicate the distance back into the depths of the Great Forest. She kept that a secret though. That anyone could communicate that far was rare, or so she had recently learned. She was tired of people's awe inspiring facial expressions towards her. She needed none of them except for one, and he hadn't shown this morning as she had hoped.

So now she knelt here, battling her disappointment and finding that fine balance where her emotions were in a complete state of stasis. Not the flux she had experienced before. Hearing footsteps on the gravel path and Sean's voice, she turned and looked up past the flowering bushes. There he was. Like a dream that was vivid but not possibly real. It had to be real though. For in her dreams, Arturo was never so tired or wearied.

Her heart raced and she automatically stood. Her long white gown draped about her, yet clinging to her, to flare out at the knees. Hair down as always, she clasped her hands together and pressed them to her heart. For surely it would burst.

Realizing this was her moment, she closed her eyes and willed the water to float up in small droplets until there were thousands of tiny small specks above them. She opening her eyes and smiling, she let them fall back to the earth in small white crystals of snow. Her excitement knew no bounds.

Arturo watched the people walking around. Maybe Sean was right, he needed this. He noticed small shimmering things sitting in the air. Focusing, he recognized them as suspended water droplets. His heart stopped as he looked for the source. There was no way, the gods wouldn't be so cruel. His body followed his heart as he spotted her. She was as stunning, if not more so as she had been the last time he'd seen her. The water drops transformed into a sort of flake.

“Trinity,” her name left him like a breath.

He didn't know what to say, what to do. He'd never thought he'd see her again. He'd dreamed about it, but he'd never thought it would be real. Motion started again, he stepped toward her and wrapped her in a bear hug. “Trinity,” he whispered into her hair.

Enveloped in his embrace, his scent filling her senses. His arms strong and sure. Trinity felt as if she was in a dream. A very real and long awaited dream. Wrapping her arms around his waist and turning her face into his chest, she inhaled deeply. Willing the moment to last an eternity. "Arturo" Tightening her hold, she feared he would disappear any moment.

All the joys of the last two years. All the gained knowledge and skills. The memories and new friends. It all melted away and she felt like she did back when they first met. A bit unsettled... heart racing... but this time sure of his friendship. "I'm so glad you are here," she said quietly into his chest. The fabric of his shirt pressed tightly against her face. She didn't want to lose him again. If he asked it, she would follow him to the ends of the earth.

Then without warning, she felt the tears start to slip out. Just a few, but their warm liquid made her squeeze her eyes tight. Oh how until now her heart had ached. She just didn't know it until it no longer did. "I've missed you so."

Natural. This was how holding Trinity felt. It was natural,it was right and yet somewhere in the back of his mind--the dark recesses that knew what kind of person he was, that knew what the life he would take her into—he knew if he kept he close, he would destroy her. He pulled back and looked down at her. “I've missed you too, my little water-witch,” he said. “I never thought I would ever see you again. You have been doing well?” He felt a led ball in his stomach. Now she would speak of a husband and a child. He would pretend to be happy while his soul screamed in pain.

Looking up into his eyes, Trinity felt herself almost lost in them. Arturo was the same now as he had been then. Always concerned for others. Smiling, she replied, "I have been well. All the things I've learned of the culture outside the Great Forest has been invigorating. I'm working with plants and music. It is a good life." But not enough. She wanted to be near him. It seemed silly and a bit unlogical to fall so madly after someone she had known less than 24 hours, but it couldn't be helped. "I want to do more though. I have been practicing. I can do more than communicate. I can heal with this ability too. Can't I be of any use to you? With you? Surely medics are needed on the front lines or something." Her voice was insistent. She was short of begging. Yet that would not lend well to proving she was civilized, she she kept herself together.

(sorry, the mushiness was getting to me....lol)

Arturo's heart sang. She was not married! As her words sunk in,he frowned slightly. The idea of her being so close filled him with joy, but he knew battlefields and the dangers of them. Absently, he cupped her face with one of his hands. He would not be able to do his job knowing she was in harm's way. He opened his mouth to refuse her offer, even as it killed him when there was a sudden explosion. Pulling Trinity behind him, Arturo spun toward the sound. Sean stepped to him, keeping Trinity between the two men. He grabbed her wrist and began running toward the garrison. He was a fool. She was a gifted healer and to not use her would foolish. Between Sean and himself they would keep her safe. Besides, living so close to the border, would not guarantee her safety. She was a stunningly beautiful woman, slavers would make a fortune on her beauty alone.

When they reached the garrison, Arturo began barking orders. He looked down at Trinity, whose wrist he still held. “Will you be able to handle this?” he asked. “You are so pure, and war. War is ugly. It twists the soul.” I would kill myself rather then to twist that pureness. He left that last sentence unsaid.

((Totally understand))

She blinked up at him, then grinned. "With you nearby to remind me of who I am and where I am, I won't lose myself." Trinity looked towards where the explosion had occurred and added, "You are my reason. Don't let me forget that. I might need reminding." Then she used her other hand to reach up and squeeze gently the hand holding her wrist, before pulling free. Gazing into his concerned eyes, Trinity wanted more than anything to wipe away the weariness and pain she saw there. What had he been through?

Instead she turned and took a few steps away so that she would have room to work. There were all kinda of water sources nearby. None pure enough for communication, but all very manipulable. Spreading her feet apart and closing her eyes, she forced her heart to slow and distracting thoughts of Arturo to subside to the back of her mind. Lifting her hands away form her body slowly and turning up her palms, she concentrated on the nearby well water. There were several wells because of the garrison and stables. The aqueduct would have been nice, but was further. For now she needed what was close at hand.

As her hands raised higher than her waist, water balls like shooting stars came out of their normal habitats. She raised her hands all the way above her head, eyes still closed in concentration. Then she started circling, slowly, one foot the pivot and the other foot stretched out but touching the ground. As she circled, the water joined as it also circled. Soon there was a large pool high in the sky, even higher than the city walls and buildings. Only then did she open her eyes. And that was to carefully direct the water into a rainfall towards the explosion site. Her attention was easily distracted now by the sights, but she kept her brow furrowed in concentration keeping the rain slow and steady.

Reluctantly, Arturo let go of Trinity's hand. He had work to do, as well as her. He gave Sean a hard look, the young man nodded and followed after Trinity. He began barking orders to those who were able bodied. He wanted to know who had done this, but first he had to get the chaos under control. He pointed to the gate guards. “Anyone leaves this place before I give the go ahead and I'll have your heads as my center piece at supper!” he barked. The men paled slightly, but nodded their understanding. Arturo wouldn't actually separate their heads, but it was a good threat and his reputation for being overly harsh for small screw ups served him well. He wasn't about to tell anyone they were just old wives tales. They served his purposes to well. Its not that he cared what anyone outside his very small circle thought of him.

He made his way to where the explosion had gone off. It was an exterior wall, away from the main housing. He frowned, it didn't make sense. If the enemy wanted to hurt them, they would have attacked a different area, it was almost as if this were a warning. He mulled it over as he helped dig out the few that had been buried under the rubble and barking orders to have the wall repaired as best it could be.
