Ok, o: I could teach you the very basics! Though, are you sure you want to learn? It's a bit hard to explain but I'll try my best if you do want to.

No, since China vastly pwns us in population... and Mandarin is the main form of Chinese spoken over there.
If you are traveling it is helpful to know Mandarin since you will rarely not be able to get a hold of a fellow speaker near where you are.

Talking about Population, won't India be more than China then? making Tamil or Hindu the most spoken language?

But I found that English would be convenient to learn, since nearly every country has English as their language course.

No, China has the most population; India has second. Plus India has many different dilects of language and so that lowers the amount of speakers of the certain dilects.
China is divided basically into two dilects; Cantonese and Mandarin. Mainland, or as it's called, speaks Mandarin whereas the southern provinces and cities speak Cantonese. However, because of the uniform writing system; both speakers can communicate through writing with little difficulties. That links together like 4 billion speakers.

So, because Chinese isn't as divided a language as the dialects of India, it is the most spoken language in the world.

Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Shang Hai,Chew zhou...

Ok, so Chinese (like many East Asian languages such as; Thai, (I believe( Tagalog, Swedish (I know it's not East Asian but they do use some tones, if you listen) and some Indian dilects) uses a system called tones.

Luckily for you Mandarin has 4 distinct tones. just google: "Mandarin tones" and shop around until you find a site you like.

I can't teach you even basic words until you learn those. However, if you wish to skip tones altogether (I do not advise this as tones literally define the meanings of most words...) I can move on.

Chinese is on of the most difficult languages to master so, just let me know if this is all too much and I'll stop.

But for the MOST part it is two. However, I think India is regionial. And also you cannot blame me, I am but a 15 year old using my /own/ knowledge and guessing/ puzzle work. I take Chinese class and my teacher lived in China for many years so... I'm going off what she said.

Yes Hindi is sort of the main one but still.

...LOL at facts. Oh well, I am bad with statistics of facts. I just know there are few more dialects which is not just Mandarin and Cantonese. But yeah, I guess the different would be Chinese use the same writing system, but Indian ones use their own writing and pronouce system.

Hong Kong is the lead Cantonese, Taiwan's dialect would be Hokkien.

Taiwan is the Mandarin, but the older people speak Taiwanese occasionally. I KNOW this because I have an exchange friend from Taiwan. Research or learn your facts before you speak please.

Well, as you know if you looked, there are 4 tones to Mandarin; the first tone is represented with a "-" above the letter (I don't have an international keyboard or program that allows me to type tones) and is spoken with a high/ medium and continuous tone.
The second is a rising tone "/" which, literally, starts at a low pitch and raises to a high pitch. You can think of this as a...sort of scale...

Third tone is the hardest, and is represented with an upside down "^" and starts at a high tone, falls (like a falling scale) and then raises back up.

Fourth tone, the easiest, is "`" and it is an accent/ attack bascially.

To practice these, think of the English pitches that go with the words; what? (If you say it surprised enough, you'll see that it is using 2nd or an elongated version could represent 3rd tone) stop! (for fourth tone) huh? (3rd tone) wow *said in a daze* (1st tone)

Taiwan is not mandarin. o__o

Taiwan's mandarin is a dialect almost. When they speak mandarin, like in China, they have a odd accent.

I speak Cantonese, since I'm from Hong Kong XD

Taiwan's main dialect is actually Wennan (or however it's spelt in English) when they speak among themselves, but most people there knows Mandarin
