Happy world time, yes. I hope.

Well, actually I learned sitting in on the class I'm the TA for, that bisexuality is sometimes still considered quite shameful among the gay/lesbian community. Some factions see it as being wimpy, taking the easy way out. I was surprised to learn that, but I can understand it.

Well, from what I understand it's pretty complicated, and a lot of the suspicion and anger goes back to the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, when bisexual men were being blamed for going out, having unprotected sex with male prostitutes, and then coming home and infecting their wives. I remember this myth from the 90s, too.

And for gays and lesbians who still have a hatred of straight culture and its absolute domination of media (i.e., "universal" stories which are actually heterosexual stories), the distaste for bisexuality makes sense.

Another reason they may hate bisexuality is due to the fact that it has become more of a fad now than anything. It's hardly possible for them to take it seriously--they feel as if it's practically mocking them. I think it's silly, since there are actually so many legitimate bisexuals, but hey... that's the effect of society.

No, it doesn't. But I can understand the perspective. I recently read a collection of what were basically "straight hate" letters, I think from the 1990s....
found it online here....
It was pretty eye-opening for me, rather like Unpacking the Invisible Backpack, which explained to me the whole problem of racial privilege.

Oh, and here's a "Knapsack" for sexuality.

Sorry, can't stop being a scholar.

Hello! How is everyone doing this fine morning? (Or whatever time-zone you happen to fall in.) I just woke up and realized my computer was still next to me from last night. I feel so lazy! Gonna be going into work late today since I'll be staying extra hours to clean. FUN.

I AM TOTALLY STRESSED OUT.

There's a big national fellowship I'm applying for, and I thought the deadline to turn materials in to my campus representative was September 10, but NO, it's AUGUST 19.

It's the kind of fellowship where you need three letters of recommendation, lots of statements of purposes, affiliation with the country you want to visit... really complicated.

And suddenly I have three fewer weeks to work on it.

Well, they actually did all agree to write the letters, which is a relief. I have yet to hear back from my language evaluator who is, most likely, away for the summer. We don't start the quarter until the end of September. *groan*

But I do feel calmer having put in the basic information, made an appointment with the campus representative, and secured my rec letters. I've also got a page and a half of crappy statement that can be slowly edited into something good, and there's a workshop next week for application help.

Well, at least you are on top of things.

I've been trying now for like, 3 months to get a job, with no success. Only one interview so far, and I ended up botching it at the last second. *gurgles and flails*

Gah, sorry to hear that.

I'm not as on top of things as it looks; mentally I'm all over the place. I'm also supposed to be writing a dissertation proposal, grading summer class final exams, and preparing a paper for a conference, and another for submission to a journal. I really shouldn't be on Menewsha at all, but it's so relaxing here.

Obviously, I'm not. :) As I mentioned to my other current RP partner, I'm working on a third draft of my grant proposal, and whenever I run out of clever and interesting ways to say, "GIVE ME MONEYS BECUZ MAH PROJECT IZ COOL, KTHX" I pop over here to check things and play a game or two.

(Oh, and I have a concert at school coming up in November, which definitely requires 1-2 hours of cello practice each day.)

Agreed, if you're desperate.

I think I would be a lot more picky if I were still living with my parents. But, otherwise, if you're on your own... it's all about whatever you can get. And then working your way up.

Luckily I haven't had any terrible work experiences to this date. I worked in retail for a year and a half, but that was in an art store. Retail part sucked, but at least it involved something of interest.

We're your friends now! Welcome welcome WELCOME!

I'm doing okay; a bit stressed out about fellowship and grant applications (there was a mixup with the due date, so I thought I had three more weeks than I actually do...), but have worked on things enough for the night.
