Between Love and Obsession
An RP by NekoLen and Tachigami

It was Thursday, and most students were looking froward to the weekend not too far away. Abel wasn't one of those students that wanted to rush toward the weekend. He enjoyed school, even after having transferred from his old one to Sand Creek high school, which was near the ocean and had a wonderful view that was known to distract students while in class. So far Abel hadn't had that problem---he enjoyed each class, and it showed with his perfect grades. The school was open and airy and seemed to let salty ocean air permeate every room, freeing student minds to think. Abel loved the school the moment he set foot on its grounds and stared up at the three floors. And when his first day began, he loved it even more. He said hello to everyone, introduced himself readily, arriving an hour before school began just to drop by his classes and introduce himself to his new teachers. They all seemed to like him, which was what he'd been hoping for, and when he met the students, he found himself drawn in almost immediately. Everyone seemed so bright and welcoming, for the most part. Even the darker ones seemed to smile at others once or twice. He thought everyone's gravitation toward him might be the guitar case he carried on his back.

He was sitting outside this morning. It was fifteen minutes before the first bell rang, and his soft case was unzipped and leaning on the wall beside where he sat above it. His fingers lightly grazed the strings, giving off a gentle melody that seemed to suit the almost Hawaiian-style view. People passed, most knew his name. He nodded and smiled their way, and a couple teachers laughed his way, waving, and continuing with their plans for the day in soft speak.

He was glad to be in such a seemingly friendly place. Abel's parents had been concerned that he would miss past friends, but had few he actually wanted to keep in touch with. He could do that via Internet, email, and phone calls, after all. This was a new experience, and his GPA had followed him so he didn't have to begin again. At his old school he'd been on honor roll and hoped to have the same happen here. Perhaps join a club or start a band. He had plans and relocating due to his father's work didn't change a single one.

Just two more days to go until the weekend, when Cain could be away from the stares and whispers and just relax at home. He had a few games he wanted to play and a few movies he wanted to watch, so he had something to look forward to at least. He stalked down the hallway to his first class, where he usually sat outside the door until the bell rung. He had finished most his homework, but he had a book to read to pass the time. As he walked down the hallways and past many lockers, he couldn't help but to feel slightly paranoid everyone was staring at him. But whenever he looked at them, no one was looking.

He shrugged this off as he arrived at his first class - English. He lent against the white wall and slid down until he was sitting on the slightly dirty linoleum floor. He dug in his bag and found the novel he was reading, a horror story about a serial killer. He started to read it, running a spare hand through his black hair as he did so. It had been dyed that way, as black as the night. He wanted to be a shadow, unnoticeable. He wanted to be able to disappear and be hard to see, but instead he stood out like a sore thumb. There weren't many others in his school with his particular fashion sense or outlook on life, so he spent his school days alone.

He yawned, rubbing his eyes as the bell rung. He stowed his book away and stood, waiting for the teacher to come and unlock the door. He always sat at the desk closet to the teacher, not because he was the teacher's pet, but because he hated to be near the back with the noisy kids. Once the teacher arrived to let in the class that had assembled outside the class, Cain ducked into the classroom and claimed his usual spot.

When the display on his phone read ten minutes before classtime, Abel sat up and zipped his instrument into his bag and hefted it and his messenger bag up. It was so much more helpful than a backpack that had to be stuffed into a locker, and could space his books out so that they didn't bulge and crush papers or binders. He stopped by the office to drop his guitar at the door, where it would remain until he wanted to come get it for lunch or after school. He went upstairs, where his first class of the day was. He adored English and Literature classes, where he could spend all his time reading, pausing to do a worksheet or read something the teacher wanted them to, and at the end write down what their homework was and handle it during lunchtime.

He slid into the classroom before most of the rest, glancing around. He was used to assigned seating back home, so this whole concept of 'free range seating' was new and almost intimidating to him. But he found his eyes drifting to a young man near the door, almost shadow-like in the semi-bright classroom, and wrinkled his brow. He stepped forward, settling in the seat beside him and smiling. "Hey there." He said brightly, setting his bag on the floor by his feet.

Cain had settled on the plastic chair he would be sitting at for an hour, tucking his satchel-type bag under the desk by his feet and pulling out his English folder. He didn't bother with lockers and hadn't used his in such a long time, he had forgotten where it was. Instead, he kept a folder in his bag, one for each subject, and a bunch of lined paper. He had to fish around in his bag for a few pens before he was completely ready for the teacher to finish rollcall and the students to be all seated.

A voice made him start slightly and he looked to the seat next to him. Usually it was empty, but today there sat another boy, around his age. Cain tilted his head, looking about the classroom. "Um... There's an empty seat back there..." He pointed towards the back of the class, where a group of jocks were noisily settling down. Cain blinked and looked at the boy again. He hadn't noticed him in his classes before, maybe he was new. "Um... You don't want to be sitting here." He was the outcast of the school. It was social suicide to be seen talking to him, let alone sitting next to him.

Abel raised a brow and glanced back to where the other pointed. Then he wrinkled his nose and shook his head. He hated the noise of class failures or jocks or cliques and tried to separate himself during classtime. "Yeah? Why's that? I figured I wanted to sit here. Uh, unless you're waiting for someone?" He glanced up and around suddenly, hoping he hadn't squirmed into someone else's plot of land. He'd not really done much looking around his past week, so he didn't really notice this guy. So whether he sat alone or sat with a friend was a mystery to him. He hadn't made an enemy yet, so he didn't want to do so yet. Besides, with what he wanted to do here---all the thing he'd done or had hoped to do before moving---he didn't want to get on anyone's bad side at all. While he was a junior, he wanted the rest of his year and a half of smooth to go very well. And he wanted real friends, not these random peers that gravitated toward him.

Although Abel did have to admit he looked exactly opposite of this guy. Today Abel wore a plain white t-shirt and a pair of faded blue jeans, possibly his favorite look. This guy wore black, had black hair that was so dark it had to be dyed. Abel's was light brown. They definitely contrasted.

"No, I... Usually sit alone..." And by usually, Cain meant always. He looked away from the other boy, suddenly feeling awkward. He didn't want the new kid to make himself instantly unpopular. He seemed likeable enough, and Cain wouldn't feel right if the masses outed him for socialising with a freak like him. "I'm... Um... An outcast. They might not be happy to see you sitting with me. Are you sure you still want to sit here?" The teacher had finished the roll call and was getting ready to set the class work for the period. Cain's attention was turned to her as she spoke, glad that they would be working on their speeches today.

The teacher assessed the speeches by how they were preformed and written. Those that were too shy to speak before the class could attend an after class session in order to be graded. Cain's topic was astronomy, a subject he was really interested in. He started to pull out his notes and astronomy book he had to research the points he would be talking about in his speech.

Abel raised a brow and shook his head. "I don't really care what they think." He turned to his bag, fishing for his English/Literature binder and pulling it out. If he were honest he did care, but the guy's words kind of cut deep. He was an outcast? A loner? Was that self-imposed, or did others strictly avoid him? If so, that was awful. Abel had, for the past week, thought everyone here was welcoming and kind. Was it because he dressed so dark? Goth, obviously. Or something based on the style at the least. He shook his head, opening his binder to his current written speech. He had several, but that was because he couldn't decide on what to talk or write about. His interests in the world were vast and outside the world, even more vast. He'd written about a recently discovered earth-like planet and TrES-2b, a planet that absorbs almost a hundred percent of the light that hits it. Another paper talked about current social media's effects on ages thirteen to eighteen.

He was sometimes called an overachiever, but in reality he was just indecisive. He did many things and sometimes didn't even bother finishing some.

Cain started working on his speech, having enough notes to fully write it out. He would learn it off by heart and write lines on cue cards later. He muttered under his breath as he worked, forgetting he was sitting next to someone. It was such a strange thing that he didn't know how to react. Part of him wanted to talk to the boy, the other didn't want anything to do with him. Eventually, he glanced over at him and tried to see what he was working on.

It seemed he had many different speeches going at once and Cain wondered if the boy was indecisive. "Um... My name is Cain," he said finally, making sure the teacher wasn't nearby. Even though he rarely misbehaved in class, his English teacher disliked it when students chatted during work time. "I haven't noticed you before, are you new?" Cain had moved schools once, back in elementary when he was relocated to live with his aunt and uncle. He remembered how uncomfortable he had been in a new place, but this guy seemed right at home.

He was considering a paper on mental illness when he heard the voice near him, and glanced up. "Abel." He said, and smiled inwardly at the relation to the brothers of the Bible. He set the notes down and tapped them lightly. He'd never really talked during class, never even passed notes, but wasn't doing anything worthwhile quite yet. He was going to write out his speech at home later because it was much cleaner that way, and he could think better. "I'm new, yeah." He nodded, smiling toward Cain. "My first day here was Monday. I kind of... got into it all pretty fast. It's nice here. Pretty warm, but I come from up north, so this is my first time being in walking distance of the ocean..." He glanced out the window across the room and spied the ocean. It was like a poster.

"Have you gone to the beach yet...?" Cain looked back at his own speech and found that he had almost finished. "I hate the sunlight, it burns my skin. But it is nice at the beach... Especially crawling around in the caves down there." Why was he talking? There was just something about Abel that made Cain feel comfortable, relaxed. He didn't feel paranoid or tense around the boy, maybe it was just the type of guy he was. Easy-going, friendly, non-judgemental. Cain wanted to get to know Abel more.

"Made any friends yet?" Why did he care? Because he wanted Abel all to himself. He hadn't had a friend before. Sometimes it was almost unbearable how lonely he felt.

Abel was smiling a bit more, and chuckled quietly. "Yeah, the beach is pretty... amazing. And the caves around the rockfaces are pretty cool too. Like a different world." He'd spent his first day looking around those caves. They were cool and humid and fresh and full of curious, new things. And he loved new things.

He nodded, looking at his papers and adding notes to look up later. "Yeah, I've met a lot of people. I can't really call anyone a friend yet, I left all my actual friends when I came down here, so it's been hard to adjust to that. I think I'm on a pretty good side with everyone so far." As he spoke, the teacher approached and she studied them.

"I hope you're working while you're talking." She said, raising a brow. Abel nodded for both of them, offering his multiple topics to be glanced over. He received a quick smile, and they were left alone.

Cain shifted in his seat, feeling his heart race as he opened his mouth several times before asking Abel a question. "Maybe you'd want to hang out with me? I've never had a friend before." He realised how desperate and pathetic he had sounded and blushed, hanging his head in dejection. "Um... Never mind, I just..." He trailed off and stared hard at his finished speech, trying not to cry. He was waiting for the rejection, for Abel to say no. Of course the boy would say no. Who would want to be Cain's friend?

He tried to start proofreading his speech, but found it hard to concentrate. He felt his ears burning as if Abel was staring hard at him. Pathetic, he thought, hearing it as another voice. So stupid. Now you've scared him away.

Abel tilted his head. "Whadd'ya mean 'never mind'? Sure I'll hang out with you. I mean it's not like I have much to do... I don't really have friends yet, or anything but homework to do. Maybe you can show me around town, I haven't really had a chance to look around..." In fact, he'd only been to his home, his new school, his father's new building, and the park across the street from his house, which was huge and lush and beautiful. He didn't know the usual hangouts, the streets, he didn't know the roads at all to drive anywhere, and he'd had his license for a year now. There was no way he was going to get lost in a new town and have to call one of his parents to come find him somehow. Or call a cab to lead him back home. That would be a death sentence in embarrassment.

Besides, Cain seemed... lonely. He'd expected Abel to think or say the worst since he'd sat down beside the kid, and it was like a challenge now to get him to see that he wasn't like the other students that seemed to ignore and avoid him.

Cain couldn't believe it. Was it that easy making new friends? All he had to do was ask? He grinned and handed his finished speech over to Abel. "Can you read over this for me? I know it is good to get someone else to proofread your work, I just... Never had the opportunity..." He trailed off, hoping Abel would like his speech. It was about how people had looked to the planets and stars for advice for centuries. Cain was fascinated about space, and had wanted to be an astronaut at one point.

"Have you got anything you'd like me to proofread?" Cain asked, glancing at the teacher who looked happy that Cain was finally socialising with someone.

Abel nodded, smiled a bit, and took the papers. He recognized immediately how much Cain seemed to love space, that world outside the atmosphere's layers. It was informative but didn't signal out a specific thing; it encompassed quite a bit of information in a small, compact form, the way Abel liked it. And it didn't give too much at once, letting others take the ideas to themselves and study them more independently. "Oh, wow." He lifted his gaze. "I really like it. It's very good so far." He nodded and gave it back, then looked at his own papers.

"I don't really have much to go on right now. Just a bunch of notes on a bunch of different things... I'm kind of disorganized, my parents hate that." He laughed when he thought about his parents, his mother complaining about a dozen different encyclopedias littered around, yelling at him to clean all those papers out of his room because it was a firetrap.

"Do you need help? Maybe I can give you some ideas to help you decide?" Cain's heart was racing and he trembled slightly. He was just so happy to be talking to someone, to have someone talking to him without pulling a face or calling him names. Abel was really nice and Cain was looking forward to getting to know him more.

He took back his speech and placed it into his folder, ready to start memorising while he talked to Abel. "It took me awhile to decide on my topic, but as soon as I thought about astronomy, I knew I had to talk about it."

Abel laughed. "Astronomy is a great topic. Huge. Can't go wrong no matter what you decide on." He'd done some research into stars, their lifespans and temperatures, depending on size and age. "I kinda managed to narrow it down to my favorites. I know there's a lot to talk about regarding mental illness, but I've been really interested in that new black planet they discovered recently, or the earth-like planet. Oh, and fifteenth-century music and storytelling, evolution of deep sea creatures." He shook his head at all the choices. Why did he have to have so many? So many likes, so few dislikes. He could write about art, modern music, anatomy, disease... He just needed to decide first.

"Mental... Illnesses?" Cain glanced about the room, and bit his lip. "The planet one sounds so fascinating. I didn't know they had discovered an Earth-like planet. Imagine going there... Finding another race... Like... Aliens or something." He hugged himself and shuddered, imagining being able to discover a new planet. If he was to find a race living there, what would he name them? Ask them what they were called? But what if they didn't understand English?

"I used to imagine discovering an alien planet... When I was younger. Being their king..." He went quiet and blushed, not sure why he had mentioned this. Something about Abel made him feel so comfortable that he could talk about anything with the boy. He glanced up at the clock and felt sad that the bell would ring in ten minutes.

Abel nodded almost wistfully, collecting his paper and stacking it neatly. "I've imagined going to some new planet... or having aliens visit someday---I mean, I'm not sure why they'd want to waste their time here since we'd be real boring to something that's mastered space travel or something. But like... I've written some ideas. Like, stories, but they all turn kind of bad because the alien races are either killed off or they start a war with us... I dunno, I guess I don't have much faith in people not to completely mow over new races if they come to the planet." He shook his head in annoyance. He watched a lot of movies, mostly with his father because his mother hated alien movies. But he didn't have much faith in his own race not to destroy a new one should it show even a minute amount of interest in their primitive lives. But if he were honest, he wouldn't have expected Cain to be interested in astronomy.

"I guess that is what everyone thinks would happen... But I think, if aliens DID come here, they would be more interested in discovering Earth and the humans that live on it." He hadn't liked alien movies, where the aliens tried to kill of the human race. It made no sense to invent space travel to simply come to Earth to start a war. "What's your next class?" Cain asked Abel, a small glimmer of hope raising in his chest. Maybe Abel was in most of his classes?

"I wonder how many classes we share. Can you sit next to me in those ones too? We could work together again," he was smiling, never feeling so happy to be at school. "Ooh, and at lunch, can we sit together? I can't wait."

Abel smiled a bit. He’d never met someone so happy to have someone show them some kind of kindness and attention. Like a puppy starved for love from their mother or their new owner. He did want to change that for this guy. He definitely looked like he needed a friend. “I got English Literature next hour, then a math class upstairs.” He went over room numbers in his head---it usually took him a full seven days to figure out where each of his classes were and to memorize them so he didn’t become lost. And in a large oceanfront school like this, it was hard not to get lost at least once.

Cain frowned slightly. It seemed they didn't share the next two classes at all. He had Biology and Art next. "Do you have Chemistry after lunch?" he asked, bringing out his own timetable to glance over it. He always had it on him because his memory was so terrible he'd forget what classes he had next. He ran his eyes across the day and realised he had been wrong. Today was Thursday. He had Maths the same time as Abel.

"I guess you can sit next to me in Maths. And then at lunchtime we can sit together in the cafeteria. I bring my own lunch from home because I never like anything that is offered here."

Abel smiled and nodded, looking up at the clock. Not much time left and they'd have to separate for a class, but he didn't mind terribly. He loved literature class. A major part of their overall grade was a short novella the classes were supposed to be working on. He was allowed to write ten pages fewer than the rest of the class because of his transfer, but didn't like the idea of doing that. He'd already written those ten pages because of his love of expression.

"Actually, I bring my own too, and I've been going out front during lunch and sitting under the awning... I like the quiet out there... And I can play without people bothering me or asking questions." He'd make a detour to the front office, grab his guitar, and take his bagged lunch out onto the small patch of grass to sit and play, and think about his course of action. He wanted to start up that band he'd tried to get together. This time he would. He was more grounded with his family now, in a new, big oceanfront city, able to get around, and he was apparently liked by most people so far.
