The town of Fortinbras was bustling with activity. The harvest this year was good, the granaries were full, and the live stock was fat and healthy. It was a lucky year, not common for the frontier. The Tavern was bustling with hard-workers, and families glad to be prepared for the upcoming winter. The Tavern was run by resident 'Mercenary' and general bachelor, 21 year old Andrew "Andy" Pimms. He came into town several years ago, and as far as the townsfolk were concerned, he was little short of a blessing: He was strong, he was smart, and when he first arrived, he had enough wealth to cause the town to thrive.

Andy would be filling up bottles of strong Liquor, made from the surplus grain and potatoes, and he would be holding up a large mug himself. "To the town of Fortinbras! We started as a small community, and now we're one of the biggest trade towns in the Kingdom! May our community last for generations to come! "He yelled, as everyone yelled in agreement. Andy smiled as he saw everyone was full of glee from their luck-filled year, and reached down under the counter, to pat a large, leather wrapped package. Inside was his old armor, only removed when he practiced every morning."Two years and counting......luck seems to finally be on my side."he said.

No-one in Fortinbras knew Andy was a former knight, or that he had any other life then a wandering swordsman. That was precisely Andy's point. He ran to the frontier, avoided any contact with the Royal army, and managed to hide in a small town. He'd hoped it would be enough for him to stay in hiding forever. Not that he didn't keep up with his training, he still practiced every morning, but he had his own reasons for abandoning the Crown.

Elowynn stood on the balcony of her large bedroom within the king's castle, watching her men train outside of the barracks beneath her. Demons had been attacking and the king ordered the elven captain to ready her troops for war against them. Elowynn hated fighting... At least when Andy was here she found something to look forward to. Now when the troops returned, she had nothing but an empty room wating for her. No friends, and no family.

All of her men had families to return to... Elowynn had a kind heart, but knew how to put on the cold and heartless act when needed. That's how she became captain of the royal army. When a young and beautiful snow white owl flew down and perched on her flower covered balcony, the twenty-one year old elf smiled ever so kindly. "Welcome back Leilatha, have you found any worthy men and women to join our forces?" She asked in a soft voice.

The owl hooted, causing the elf to sigh and look out into the horizen. "If only Andy would come back..." She whispered quietly. The owl made a cooing sound and flew over to Elowynn and perched on her shoulder. The elf chuckled and turned to go inside.

A single courier would enter the room. He was dressed in purple, red, and gold trimming: The regalia of the Royal Scout corps. He would bow before her. "Sorry to interrupt on short notice, Knight-Captain, but I bring word from King Roxten Kallan. "The scout said, bowing his head. "As I am sure you're aware, what with the recent threats from the Demons and the Slavers, the King has ordered all of us to search for Knights that have Forsworn their duty to the crown, and bring them back to the fold....."He said, before pulling out a list.

"We have found the following knights: Sir Juncan Aelius, Lady Tamara Essos, Sir Kayne Ustengrav, Sir Hunter Bell-tower, Lady Lamia Aradesh, and Lady Aveline Sylvan. "He said, putting the list away. He would then hand her a letter. "I was also told to hand you this, by Lord Scout Matthias. He said this was to be done urgently....."The scout would bow again, before leaving.

The contents of said letter would be as followed:

To Knight-Captain Elowynn

As per the Order, we have sent scouts to find the various knights that have fought for our kingdom. What hasn't been told is that many refused to return to the fold, and upon using force to get them to return, fought and fled. The number that has been found is small, in comparison to those that have left us. But I digress

Our search has yielded results that you would find interesting: Former Knight Andrew Pimms has been spotted alive.

My scouts were sent to investigate why a town on the frontier suddenly began to grow unexpectedly, without suffering from severe attacks by demons or slavers, and found that much has been the result of a wandering mercenary, that goes by the name 'Andy'. Though we cannot link him by name, his description is similiar to that of the former kinght, and I thought it'd be best if you were sent to confirm this. You were the closest one to the former Knight, and have the best possible chance of convincing him to return.

You're to leave tonight. Food, supplies, and horses will be provided for you. I pray to the Dreaming Goddess Ava for your success

Sincerely,
Matthias Imperii
Lord Scout of King Roxten Kallan

Elowynn had just sat down on her bed before the courier had entered her room, completely unannouced. "You know I don't mind..but I do ask that you knock before entering." She said to him quietly as she gently stroked the head of her owl. She nodded her head lightly as the courier began speaking about the demons and slavers. "I heard the news before it was ever mentioned." She said as the courier began to read of the names on his list of knights that had been found. Of course, she knew that the man wouldn't understand her meaning... The elf tilted her head slightly when the courier handed her a letter.

She waited for the courier to leave before cautiously opening the sealed letter, reading it carefully as to not miss a single letter written on the rough paper. Her grey eyes widden as she continued to read. "They found Andy..." Elowyyn whispered softly to her owl. Of course they didn't know him by that name, but Elowyyn did. For she was one of the few people that could address him as so. Once she had finished reading, she put the letter aside and slowly rose to her feet. "Stay here while I pack, the king wants me to investigate..and you are coming- God only knows how long I'll be gone..." She said quietly to the owl.

The owl cooed and flew over to one of the bed posts and perched, watching as the elf scurried around the room as she began packing for the trip. Though friends, Elowyyn knew that Andy was not going to purswaded easily.. Her backpack was only big enough to pack enough supplies to hold her for a week. Clothes, blankets for if and when she were to sleep under the star, and a few snacks for her beloved
Leilatha. Once packed and ready, the elf threw a shaw over her shoulders, fastened it so it wouldn't come off, and put on her backpck. Elowyyn glanced up at the owl and whistled softly before walking out of the room. Leilatha followed as asked and the two made their way towards the entryway.

Throughout Elowyyns travel through to the country side, she'd see the same thing: Most of the towns were destroyed. In the larger cities, refugee's were forced to sign on with the army just to make ends meet. The few settlements still standing were hard-pressed, and clearly falling apart. Many were fleeing their homes to avoid the coming flame, and those few that remained.....were left burying their dead. What sort of mad man, or woman, would do something like this?

Then there were the Slavers: Opportunistic scoundrels willing to murder anyone and anything to earn a living. Kill a child's family, then raise it into slavery, so it's all they ever know. Perfect way to keep them docile. There were so many, that most fights had to be avoided, or the situation ignored, due to the lack of available man-power.

However, on the day that Elowyyn, and whoever she took with, arrived at the town, the only word for it would be 'Secure'. There was a large, new stonewall erected, it couldn't have been there for more than a year, and there was a Militia guarding the entrance to the town. Their weapons were regular steel, and they were clad in hardened leather or Iron, but it was clear that they were well-trained, and well-prepared. The Farmlands inside the wall lacked the taint of the carnage from the outside, and though the Guards were wary, there was not the tense atmosphere of most of the other settlements.

Out of the guards, an Elderly Veteran stepped over. This man wore the flag of the kingdom over his shoulder, and obviously served in the Royal army, but he looked at Elowyyn with disdain. "I am the Captain of the guards here, my name is Benjamin Tallow. Tell me, why would the foolish son of Queen Yasmina, King Roxten, send one of his knights to the frontier? I thought we came out this far to get AWAY from the King. "he said. If he knew of Andy's previous occupation, he didn't show it.

As Elowynn and her compainion traveled, she forced herself to look away from the towns that had been destroyed through demon and slaver attacks. Her owl perched on her shoulder, rubbing her little white head into the elf's cheek and cooing quietly. "This is what we should be fighting to protect..." Elowyyn whispered quietly to the owl, keeping her head low and her grey eyes to the ground as she rode on the borrowed horse.

The elf didn't dare stop to sleep or rest. No..she wouldn't stop until she found the settlement where they had spotted Andy. She couldn't bare to think about what would happen if a slaver child attacked her. Elowyyn swore to her elder, before joining the army, that she would never harm a child.

When she finally arrived at the small town, she was greeted by an elderly veteran who was definitely unhappy to see her. Elowynn sighed softly and looked over the man cautiously as she climbed down from the horses back. Benjamin Tallow... She would remember that name. "I am Elowyyn, 1st ranking knight-captain of..." She paused when the man spoke of her king and very slowly lowered her sheathed katana to the ground, close to her. Hopefully the veteran would see her gesture as a peace offering. "I am only here to find a friend I have dearly missed." She said in a soft voice, placing a loving hand over the owl's head. "I was informed that he was spotted here..." She said to the man. "May I enter your guarding town?" Elowynn asked.

Fire....
Screams everywhere....
Children crying....
Blood dripping from blade...

Andy shot up from his bed, holding his head. "agh......dammit......"He slowly got up, before rubbing his eyes. He hadn't had a nightmare that.....vivid in awhile. Standing up, he went over to the side of the room, and put on a set of leather armor. He didn't take his old armor out unless for training, and he didn't do that until later. Grabbing his old sword, he splashed water from a basin over his face, and stepped out of his small shack.

He'd walk over to the Inn, and unlocked the door. The place was cleaned up after the revelry last night, which was a good thing. Andy quickly went down to the cellar to check on the reserves of food and liquor. Though, even if He was running low, the traders in town would most likely be more than happy to assist him in rebuilding his stock.

Benjamin looked at the woman, before ushering a guard over to walk over to the woman. "You'll be under escort here. Just one thing: Watch yourself around the tavern owner. He may not be the leader here, but he's been a god send here. If you came here to harm him......let's just say that our town would make sure you didn't escape. "he said. As if to emphasize this, the guards tensed up, and the nearby traders crossed their arms, obviously wary. Andy always had an unusual knack for gaining the loyalty of the people around him.

Most likely due to the fact that Andy was a Commoner himself once. Andy knew how to act around royalty, and the common people, while being able to mediate with both.

Elowynn watched her surroundings carefully, noticing how the guard had also picked up her sheathed katana and placed it over his back as the strap allowed. Only narrowing her grey eyes slightly as if offened by the veteran's words. "I'll have you know Captain Tallow, that I'm here to harm no one..just because I'm of the royal army doesn't mean I enjoy hurting people. I am still an elf by birth and practice my elven beliefs." She said to Benjamin in a low voice as she stepped closer to the veteran.

The elf took a step back and looked at the guard assigned to escort her. "Please take care of my katana while it is in your hands..and escort me to the tavern where I might rent a room." She said to the guard in a calm voice, gently petting her owl on the head to quiet her hooting.

The guard nodded slowly, before making his way through the settlement. In contrast to the ruins of the other small settlements, this one looked to be that owned by nobility, though it was anything but that. The towns wall obviously protected them from any severe attacks, and their farmland untainted by war obviously made for good trade. The people here made great strides to grow their community. It was obvious that this land would most likely continue to prosper.

The guard would finally lead her to a humble tavern, small in comparison to the main cities, but well kept. The tables were made of clean wood, the floors had rugs, and the chairs and seats had good cushions on them. "Andy. There is a woman here that'd like to rent a room!"The man yelled.

A voice would come from the cellar. "Hold on, hold on! I need to get the casks out! I can't believe you guys wen through four of them in one night....serves me right, I guess. "he said, as he balanced four large casks, two in each arm, and brought them up. "I am glad you're here. I need you to talk to Captain Tallow, and ask him if he'd be willing to allow mages to......to...."He stopped short when he finally came up. His face went to complete shock as he saw Ellowyyn. After a moment, he shook himself from his demeanor, and looked towards the guard. "Leave."

"Sir? I was ordered by the captain to..."

"I'll be fine. Just report back to him. "Andy said to him. As the guard captain handed Ellowyyn back her Katana, and left, Andy laid the casks down in their proper place, and poured himself a glass from one. Typhlosion, a brew made from mages in the city of Armagekia, and Andy's old drink of choice.. Andy would then proceed to taste the brew. "bah....too warm. "he said, before placing his hand under the cup. His hand would glow a light blew, and the glass began to fog over. "much better...."He said, as he drained the cup in one go.

He'd set the glass down, not turning to face Ellowyyn. ".....I thought I made it clear I didn't want to be found.......Ellie, what in the name of the Santharians are you doing here?"he asked her, his voice calm.

Elowynn followed the guard closely, but respected his personal boundries. Clearly, no one trusted her and that was just fine in her book. Glancing around, curiously watching the townspeople as they went about their day. It seemed to be a nice peaceful little settlement. As long as no one messed with the people... She could tell they meant business. "Nice little place here..." She said softly, petting Lei on the head again.

When they arrived at the tavern, she lightly covered her ears when the guard yelled, to a man in the cellar she assumed. Elowynn blinked a few times when she heard a reply. A familiar voice that she prayed belonged to her friend. The elf honestly didn't know if Andy were alive or not..but due to being sent out to find him, it rose her hopes to look forward to seeing him in one piece. Seeing the man who had answered the guard, she happily took her sheathed katana back into her arms and starred at Andy with wide grey eyes, before he turned away from her.

She moved her eyes to the floor and adjusted her katana on her back. "Jesus Andy... The least you could do is offer me a pleasant greeting." She said in a quiet voice, hurt by his off-the-bat rejection to her presence. She looked at him and sighed softly. "You stopped writing me, and I was beginning to think you were dead." Elowynn said to him, lowering her gaze. "I just wanted to rent a room... If that's too much to ask, I'll sleep in a tent." She said in a low and tried voice, not wanting to argue with him.

"Ellowyyn, I think that was the point. I wanted people to think I was gone. Better that way. "He said, before pouring her a glass of milk. "Cow's milk, Filtered, cold. I know you won't want something alcoholic yet. "he said, tossing her the glass. He still hadn't looked her in the face. He then lightly placed down a key. "First room.....you're an old friend, so no charge....just have your business done, and be out of here....."he said.

This was completely unlike Andrew. He never acted like this, towards his friends or enemies. Whats more, his cold reaction was the complete opposite of how he treated the guard. It was like he was intentionally trying to push her away from him.

Elowynn closed her eyes when he responded. This was not the Andy she knew... Giving people the cold shoulder was not something he did. To anyone. She caught the glass of milk without even looking up. "I don't drink, that hasn't changed." She said quietly before walking up and picking up the key to the offered room. "Thank you..." Elowynn said in a soft voice as she turned and walked towards the room that he had given her for the night. Once inside the room, she closed the door and sat on the edge of the bed, starring down at the floor with saddened eyes. Lei cooed and rubbed her head into the elf's cheek.

Elowynn smiled a little and gently stroked the owl on her head before slipping off her boots and laid down on the bed, not bothering to cover herself with the blankets. She wasn't cold. Lei hooted and flew over to the end table sitting bedside, perching and closing her eyes to sleep. Elowynn just laid on her back with her knees up, and starring at the ceiling as if deep in thought. Tears began to brim her lower eyelids and she quickly rolled onto her side and curled up in a loose ball, trying to fight back the tears as she has always done. Emotions were not something that the royal knights were supossed to let get in the way. She was on a mission..and she couldn't return until she had succeeded.

The moment that she was out of sight, Andy ran into a different room, and slammed his fist into the wall., planting a rather large hole in it. "DAMMIT!!!.....God fucking dammit! of all the people, why her?! why Ellie?!"Andy said, not caring if people heard. Andy came to this town to get AWAY from that life, and now he had a reminder like her......it was like something dunked him in cold water, waking him up. If she was here, it might be to take him back, and if he went back, she'd learn what had happened.....what he did.

No, it can't end like that.

The best option he had was to keep her at a distance, and make sure she left on her own. Andy did his best to kill the man he was several years ago. That part of his life was over......wasn't it?

Elowynn slowly fell into a black dreamless sleep as she lay on the bed, still curled up in a ball above the blankets. The trip she made was unlike any other trip she had taken, and was truely exhausted.

The elf captain of the royal army awoke a few hours later, when the moon was high in the sky and the midnight sky was lit with glimmering stars. She slowly rolled to her back and starred up at the ceiling even though she couldn't see anything but an abyss of darkness, since she hadn't turned on the lamp yet. Didn't need to. Sighing, she sat up and glanced at her owl. "Lei, come with me to stargaze?" She asked the owl, who hooted with delight as she flew and perched on the elf's shoulder. Elowynn casually slid off the bed and quietly opened the bedside window. She was sure to grab her sheathed katana before carefully climbing out of the small window and proceeded to skillfully climb up the side of the tavern, to the roof where she sat and gazed up at the stars.

Andy was outside the tavern, only by a few feet. He was unaware of Ellowynns presence. "two years.....two fucking years I've been here, and now all of a sudden, this happens.....By Santhaia, I came here to escape from that life. I am not that person anymore....."he said, staring down at his reflection in the pond. "The butcher of the Mosignor city....It's a title I'll have the rest of my life. But she can't know about it. It's my burden to bear, no-one elses....."He said, standing up. "I am Andy Darmont. I am not Andrew Pimms anymore......that died with my sister at Mosignor. "he said, walking away from the puddle.

Elowynn blinked a few times when she heard Andy's voice and flickered her gaze over to his shadowy figure, due to the low lighting of the town. She listened carefully to what he was saying, and caught just about every word he spoke. The elf slowly stood, still looking at him. "Andy?" She called to him just loud enough for him to hear her, not moving from her spot on the tavern roof. What wasn't he telling her, and why? They were comrads..dare say even friends before he left the castle. She was truly concerned about him and wanted to know what was troubling him, if he would even tell her.

No matter what is was..she wouldn't think any different of him. She would see to that. Andy was and would always be an ally in her eyes.

Andy froze, but he knew running would only make it more suspicious. He would look around carefully."....yes?"he would ask. He didn't know how long she was there, and he feared the worst. She shouldn't...no, couldn't know what he had done. If she heard, it would mean that he'd have to leave, and rebuild elsewhere....if they would ever stop chasing him.

Elowynn's expression softened, knowing Andy couldn't fully see her. "Beautiful night out, isn't it?" She spoke in a calm voice, slowly walking to the edge of the roof so she could see him better. Elowynn couldn't help but smile a small unnoticable smile at the male, again knowing that he couldn't fully see her. "Are the stars always so bright here?" She asked quietly, moving her gaze back up to the stars. Elowynn wouldn't let on that she had heard anything. She had a feeling that she wasn't supossed to anyway.

"....Yeah. Away from the smog of the city, there is a view so beautiful that it can steal your breath away. "Joseph said, sitting back down. "I remember coming to these forested areas on missions with you. You'd be staring at the beauty of the forest at night, along with it's sounds. Me? I stared at the sky, with the billions of lights shining bright."he said to her.

(who's Joseph? O.o)

Elowynn swallowed back a chuckle and skillfully slid down off the edge of the roof, landing on her feet perfectly, then slowly began to walk towards Andy. She hoped he wouldn't mind her comapany... "Yeah.. now days they sent me to burning villages. It's nice to see the stars again." Elowynn said in a soft voice, her grey eyes finding the night sky once again. The midnight sky was clear. There wasn't a hint of blackness from the smog and smoke from a nearby source. Oh how sometimes she wished she could just leave the city behind and go back to the forest which she came. Caring for the land and animals.. Small tears began to form in the corners of her eyes and she quickly wipped them away.

She couldn't now..even she truly wished it. Elowynn had too much blood on her hands to return to the other elves. Humans destroyed so much..and she was helping them first hand. They would never accept her. Elowynn glanced at him. "I've learned much while you've been away..if you still train I would like to show you one morning." She said to him, a small hint of hope glimmering in her grey eyes. A glimmer that was ready to die. Her eyes weren't as bright as to when she met and knew Andy. The fighting and bloodshed was starting to drown her flame of hope amd joy.

"Ellowynn.....I train every night. You'll get to see it in a bit, but that's all I do. I am not that person anymore, Ellowynn..."he said, before turning around. "Before I let you show me, I have to ask you a question, and I want you to be honest with me: What brought you here? We're on the ass-end of the nowere, far enough that we wouldn't make a big splash. I thought this was the place where veterans that were done fighting came to duck their heads. "he said to her.

Andy appeared to be a lot....older then 21. Obviously, whatever personal demon was hounding him meant he didn't get any good sleep, but it appeared that he came to this place to forget who he was, or that his old life had even existed. There were rumors, of course, but Andy was still a respected knight, and a skilled soldier. What could cause a man to act like that?

(sorry, that's my name.)

(ah. it's cool ^^)

Elowynn looked down at the grass. "I wasn't..." She began to say that she didn't mean to make sound like anything..she was just curious. She closed her eyes, happy to hear that he did indeed still train at night. But she didn't act on that happiness. Elowynn looked up and gazed at him with a soft expression when he asked her the question. "If I told you..you'd want to run me off." She said in a soft voice. "I didn't want you thinking I was just on a recruit mission..because I'm not. You're alive and that's all I care about. The king doesn't know exactly where you are, and I intend to keep it that way because you left with a reason to disappear. To stay hidden from the kingdom." She said to him in a quiet voice, keeping her eyes on the grass beneath. "I respect that..." Elowynn whispered just loud enough for him to hear.

Gently stroking the head of her owl friend, she slowly raised her eyes to look at Andy. "I'll leave in the morning if that's what you want..." Elowynn said in a soft voice, fighting back the sign of her voice cracking from wanting to cry. She knew she couldn't..and she wouldn't.

"No, it's not that I want you to leave, it's just-...."Andy would run a hand through his hair, obviously trying to find the right words. "Look, prove to me that you've grown stronger, that you are more than capable, and I'll tell you everything. "he told her. He may not want to, but Andy believed that, after everything they've went through, she deserved a chance at finding the truth. He owed her that much.

Elowynn's eyes widen when Andy finally managed to finish his thought, her heart skipping a beat at his request. "You want me..to prove myself...?" She asked in a soft voice, as if taken back by his words. The elf slowly placed a hand over the sheathe of her katana and she nodded to him after a moment of thinking. "I don't know how much I could prove to the best swordsman I've yet to meet- but I hope it'll be worth your time." She said to him with a small smile coming to her thin lips.

Andy would lead her to a grove, inside the walls of their town. It was far away enough that they wouldn't be discovered, and it provided optimal cover from spectators. "I know you're here to bring me back. We all know about the kings decree...."Andy would say, as he was still turned away from her. He would then rub the back of his head. "...~sigh~...Sorry Elowynn. It's like I told you. "Filius would turn around, and raise up his fists. "I fight by myself nowadays. "he said to her, using his finger to usher her closer. Obviously, his words were little more than a pretext, to give her reason to fight him. The fact he wasn't using his blade meant he wanted a no-life-threatening fist fight from her.
