I can finally file my taxes! I've been waiting almost three months for my W2-G form. I shouldn't complain too much, since it's a form to claim gambling winnings which they already took taxes out for, but still! I've never had to do it before, and I didn't want to screw it up.

I'll track posts later this evening; I know a few of you are ready to be added, but this is a little time sensitive! For me, that is, obviously not the government

I should probably file my taxes soon too.. I've never done it before. My parent's friend used to do my parents' and mine for us for free... orz Is it simple when it's just one job for a single person...?

It seems very complicated at first, but as long as you're a single adult (not married, that is) with one, or even two jobs, it's not too bad. I use TurboTax. They go through it very well, step by step. I've been doing it myself for years. It was just weird this year because I won a lottery prize on a scratch-off.

@Zig: I'm glad I managed to finish up a report yesterday, so today's workload is a lot less. I hope you can get all the work out of the way soon!

Nomming on a bagel right now. But yeah I wish it was bedtime now too. ;;

-----------

I'll never understand why taxes are so complicated and relies on the citizens to file them themselves. Why can't the government do that for them if their job/source of income isn't very complicated? Here I just kinda wait for a letter to notify me it's time to pay my taxes and then read it and it'll tell me exactly how much I have to pay. (usually none; because I'm low income )

Wait, what? Pay? I'm very confused. For me, filing my taxes shows how much I get from the government, as in, they pay me.

...In that case, I see why they have people do it themselves.

But yeah the letters also tells us how much we're getting back too, if the situation applies.

I'm so sorry, that was ignorant of me to say. It's just how the U.S works. Government takes a part of our paychecks each time, and during 'tax season' we can get some of that back.

No need to apologize! I know the US tax system is very complicated, so I'm kind of dreading if I ever have to do it. Thanks for explaining the bit about taking part of the paychecks and thus getting some of it back during tax season. I think we have something similar, but I also think it's more like the social security thing in the states? Where they take some money from you, then after you retire you can get money like a mini paycheck...

Oh, yes, that's very much a thing here, too. I pay in to the the social security, but they also take out for medicare, state, insurance and the like...

I feel very stupid talking about this because I know jack squat about it.

Edit; and yet I do my own taxes and I am fine?

Edit 2; Social security is something I pay for, even though I'm 30, so when I do get to retirement age, I can live off what I paid and? other things, I guess.

...Pweep, just stop talking, you don't know shit.

Oh yeah we get a bit taken out for healthcare too, unless you opt out of it. IMO not worth opting out, because medical fees are scary high when you have to pay everything out of your own pocket. (still not as bad as in the states though...)

And yeah I feel stupid talking about this too because I also know jack squat about it, just a general gist.

I'm just glad I'm getting half of what they took out for taxes on my lottery win. I really shouldn't be whining about it; they took about 1/3 of the total pot to begin with. Out of the 20k prize, I got about 13.5k on a check. Let me tell you, I was a nervous wreck driving four hours with a winning lottery ticket in my pocket. In my state, you have to go to the capitol to cash in if the prize is over $600.

If CI's were still a thing here, I'd have bought tons of them Instead, I locked up most of my winnings in a CD for 15 months to compound interest, and it gives me time to look for a new car! That's what I intend to buy with it. Not a brand new one, but my current car is a 2006. Would be cool to be able to bluetooth my phone!

We have a few more days, but don't forget to get to post four more times if you want to be included in the drawing! If you don't want to, that's fine too! I just didn't want anyone to forget, and get the competition heavier!

I won't ping those without the minimum of 5 often, so consider this a friendly reminder!

Congrats with the lottery! And yeah, I've told myself the same thing regarding CIs, except my luck with lotteries was way worse and I've only ever won NTD$100 once, which was the same amount for a lottery ticket in the first place. (essentially getting my ticket money back)

Hope you find a good car

HAH! I've played a lot and to date, besides some free draws, I think my biggest win was 150 bucks on a scratch it.

$150 isn’t bad!

I recently won a sort of “grant” type thing to move to my new city this summer which came with a $10,000 check though (given in installments throughout the year) so I can’t complain!

Oh that's great! Quite a nice incentive for sure (as long as you like the city I suppose ):P That'll be exciting to go somewhere new though

I hope I’ll like it! When I visited the first time I wasn’t all like “I HAVE TO MOVE HERE” but it seems like a nice place and everyone was really friendly. It’s definitely an up and coming city and I like the initiatives that they have to include newcomers in the community and make it a diverse and welcoming place. I’m not super happy about moving a second time in just two years but hopefully we’ll be there for at least a few years if not longer.

Me too! Sounds like a nice enough place. Having a nice and friendly community would be fantastic XD Not to say ours isn't but... the drivers have gotten so aggressive and it's hard to find the right group around here It's been such a long time since I've moved. It was on the table last year but it got shelved for a bit longer. I would definitely want to pick somewhere that I didn't have to move for a while

I play once in awhile, every couple months or so. Throw ten bucks towards some scratch offs for the hell of it. That's what I won it from; a $2 crossword Most I won before was $50.

Yeah, moving sucks butt. I've done it a dozen times throughout my life. I really hope you have an enjoyable time nonetheless in your new city. Having a great community makes it worthwhile in the end
