  • "Cogito Ergo Sum"
    [I think, therefore I am.]

    Introduction

Corbin High is an averagely-sized magical high school, located at the center of Rome in Italy. The school was named after it's founder, a roman scholar who wanted to pass his knowledge and control over magic onto young people. This wasn't for their own benefit, however, as he molded them into the perfect fighters for his new army. Dominus Corbin, as he was called, tried to take over Rome but failed when his small army was conquered by the state's own army. This was because the other army was simply much larger in numbers and Corbin's pupils tired quickly in the onslaught.

At the time, the ruler of Rome had a witch on his court, and he made the witch bind Corbin's powers. Corbin was then ordered to continue his school, as it had been found effective. While the scholar couldn't overtly make another army, he did plant subtle thoughts and ideas into his new pupils by his way of teaching. There wasn't another riot, but Corbin's way of thinking was passed onto the next generation and so on.

Now, more than 1500 years later, the school still exists. Many things have changed, including the building and the curriculum, but Corbin's thoughts are still present when you walk the corridors. Corbin himself once twisted his school's motto, "I think, therefore I am", into "You think of me, therefore I still exist". And that is true. As long as people still think of Corbin, or his ways, he will still exist and be embodied by the school.

  • Description

Corbin High is located near the remains of the old Colosseum. Hidden in the shadows of the ruins, the entire campus is spelled to be hidden to those who mean harm or who should not be there. If you belong there, however, you should have no troubles with seeing past the illusion and you should be able to witness the sight that is Corbin High.

While tall in its own right, the building barely reaches above the middle of the Colosseum. Also, the building is wider than it is tall, which gives it a lot of space. Around the building in a 230-feet radius, there are grass and trees and other lush greenery, but at the edge of the radius the ground is barren and filled with rubble. A slightly crumbled path that comes from the Colosseum itself leads to the edge of the radius and becomes firmer and neater the closer it is to the edge.

As you walk up a neatly paved path to the front doors, there are a couple of students wandering around or sitting beneath the shade of a tree to read a book or talk. When you look up, you can see a slightly shimmering dome-like shape cover the whole campus and it keeps out the bad weather. Rather, the weather around Corbin High is enchanted to stay favourable all the time unless there is a special event planned.

After walking up the steps to the glass double doors and pushing them open, you are then faced by an entrance area of sorts. There are seats among the two corners at each one of your sides, and there is a desk a couple of feet in front of you. A woman smiles politely at you and it is there that you pick up the key to your dorm room, your time-table and any other things that you could possibly need, such as a map and a key to the save in your room.

Taking the items, you then wander around the building a bit. The front area splits into a hallway on each side. The left one leads to a gym and a pool, and the right one leads to the dorms. There is also a stairway at the right side of the desk and you walk up to it, taking the stairs up to the first floor.

The first floor shows an array of classrooms, each one a bit different from the previous one, but nothing really of interest. After taking the stairs again you end up on the second floor, which happens to be a large library. The library is filled with bookcases in which books are neatly and alphabetically placed next to each other according to author and then according to title. There is an index at the librarian's desk that lists all authors, subjects and titles for easier perusal of the library.

The third floor is strangely empty and when you take the next staircase, you end up on top of the building. Around you, there are a bunch of telescopes on a row, and behind each telescope, there is a small stool. Apparently, Astronomy is a subject also taught at the school.

After having finished seeing all that looks remotely interesting, you go all the way down again, to the front area, and then pick the right corridor to find your dorm room and settle in.

Possibly from the Roman cognomen Corvinus, which was derived from Latin corvus "raven".

  • At Corbin High students are not sorted by age or skill but rather, or so it seems, rather randomly into groups. As such there are classes where the age difference between children is more than four years. It is rumored that this order is not random at all, but that all students are put with others who have the same potential as they do.
  • While the dorm rooms are mixed, magic prevents a person entering the opposite gender's room past 9 PM. It doesn't prevent you from leaving, however, and there is a loophole in this little rule as the magic can't eject people out of the room if they've been there since before 9 PM.
  • Each student dorm consists of a bedroom and there are two communal shower-rooms for each gender (so four bathrooms in total).
  • The teachers' quarters lay underground and only teachers have access to them. A teacher's quarter consists of a bedroom, a bathroom and a study.
  • The shimmering dome around the campus prevents intruders from entering but it also keeps in students. They are allowed out in the weekend from Friday 8 PM till Monday 8AM.

The room was good. It was warm - warm was good. The bed was soft. This was good. The wall paper was not peeling, and the view from the window was nice. This was also good.
She was happy.
The golem settled down onto her bed, wondering what to do for a moment - then, with a little relieved expression, she began to unpack her things. Having something to do was an ingrained habit, something that she simply couldn't break - she wasn't quite so bad as she had been, simply stopping when she had nothing to do, but she still didn't like it.
She began to take the carefully folded clothes from her bag, putting them into the chest-of-drawers ever so carefully, sticking her timetable up on the wall beside it, looking at it with quite a little satisfaction. It was good.
Having finished this, she began to shelve the few books she had brought with her from the rehabilitation center, happy in their neatness. Finally, she propped a small sepia photo of a pretty young man up on her bedside table - he looked pretty solemn, but then everyone did in photos from those days. She smiled at the photo. This was also good.

  • After visiting the front desk to check in and to collect the customary 'care-package' (keys, map, timetable and other essentials), Dustin made his way through the school. According to the briefing earlier, and the information on his papers, the teachers' quarters were underground. It didn't take him that long to find the entrance, and soon he had dumped all of his luggage onto his new bed. He didn't bother to test it, because there was plenty of time to do so later, instead preferring to pack his messenger bag with the whole care-package and some materials with which he could sketch.

Making his way back to the groundfloor, he then proceeded to move out of the building and to the edge of the dome. Settling himself in front of a tree, the young teacher set to drawing his environment.

She looked out of the window as she stood up from placing the photo, and the sight brought a smile to her face - it looked like the trees were singing in the breeze.
The golem had set the cage containing her Cheese and Biscuit on her bed - she hadn't even considered that a potential roommate might hate rodents. It simply wasn't a thought to her. However, she was going to have to think about where to put them more permanently - they wouldn't be happy somewhere they didn't get a good amount of sunlight, and she wanted them to be happy.
Picking up the chalkboard from her duvet, she tucked it under one arm. As a golem, she was naturally made unspeaking; it could be fixed, but she had neither the money nor the will to go through with the remodelling it would need. She had already been broken once; to go through it again would be horrifying.

There, she was ready to go now. Hesitating, she picked up one of the books from her shelf, tucking it under her arm along with the the board; she would go sit out in the sun, and read, since her room mate didn't seem to have turned up yet (if she had one at all).

A few minutes later, she was wandering along a gravel path beside the lush lawn - she had noted with pleasure how well-kept the grounds were, something that made her, well, if not happy, content.

  • Dustin had just finished his rough sketch of a nearby tree, when he heard footsteps approaching. Leaning back against the bark behind him, he calmly looked up and saw a woman approaching. Giving her a once-over, he mentally arched an eyebrow at the chalkboard under her arm, but then reckoned that he wasn't one to talk since he lugged around worse things than that (the various tubes of paint in his bag attested to that fact).

After giving his sketch a last glance, he put his charcoal down next to him on the grass, and waited until the woman was closer to him so he wouldn't have to shout. Offering her an easy smile, his baritone voice carrying over to her as he spoke.

"Good afternoon, miss." he greeted, lifting his hand as a way to say hello and to invite her over to where he was sitting.

There was one other girl there, sat upon a bench in silence as she secretly pondered the many things of the world, particularly of this school since it was her current place of residence, in a way at least.
She was wearing a long coat, buttoned down to her knee's leaving her head as the only visible piece of of her body that wasn't covered in clothes. Behind her a little tot he left stood a man in a black suit, clothes cleanly pressed, glasses covering his eyes and head shaved, matching the stubble around his jaw and mouth. It was almost a contest for lack of personality between the two.
Bradley was 'protected' by this man constantly, since she was a valuable asset to those who created her, she honestly didn't care too much. As far as she saw him he was nothing more than some unwanted hunk of meat standing between her and any possible assailant.
She looked over to where a teacher was drawing. What was the fascination behind drawing realistic things when one could simply look about at the world? She didn't understand the concept being 'still life'. Then another person arrived, holding something, a chalkboard? Unusual, she didn't know what to make of it, but jumped to no conclusions,
"Ma'am?" The bodyguard looked down to her, checking his watch quickly, "Remember; your re-optimization test is scheduled for 4 o'clock."
"Yes," Was the immediate response and she looked forward again. Just thinking about the many things of this world.

A small figure skipped out off the main building, heading towards the woods. Her dark clothes kept her hidden until she skipped past the shade. One watching would wonder why one would wear such dark clothes on such warm days, however the little girl paid no attention to watchers, content to merely make it to the woods. Upon reaching the woods, she slowed to a slow walk, her small height making it easier to follow the path she chose. Upon closer look, one would notice that the little girl was not in fact a little girl, but merely a small woman. Her figure made up for it however, leaving a just reason for why she would wear such baggy clothes.

  • Dustin could feel eyes on him, but he ignored them in favor of smiling at the student in front of him. Patting the ground next to him, he mutely invited her to sit there. As a figure skipped out of the main building, the demon blinked and re-focused his gaze on the moving blur. Another small female student, there seemed to be a lot of them lately and it tended to make him feel like a giant. Or at least something relative to that species.

He didn't question her dark clothing, since it would be rather hypocritical of him considering his own dark emerald shirt and black jeans.

After a quick glance down to make sure that he hadn't accidentally wiped his hand on the sketch, Dustin scanned the immediate area because he was curious as to who was watching them. A couple caught his attention and he figured it was them who had been staring. Another female student (the boys must've holed themselves up or something) and some sort of bodyguard... A bodyguard wasn't exactly a strange occurrence, what with all the different species/races around here.

She slowly headed towards the school grounds at a calm pace as her feet made a small crunching noise from the rock and rubble of the barren land. She was wearing black baggy jeans that were so loose they looked like they were about to fall off her hips, and a plain black sleeveless shirt that fit her figure perfectly. Hanging loosely around her neck was an old looking black leather collar. Her tail gently swayed a little with each step she took and her ears were drooped down a little lazily. She was carrying only one average sized black bag in her left hand. She had all of the possessions she wanted to bring with her in that one bag. The only thing that couldn't fit was the katana that she held in her right hand.

The funny thing was she was walking with her eyes closed. She was a little tired, but she also just found walking with her eyes closed more relaxing. Whenever her eyes were open she was constantly looking at everything that made even the slightest movement. She didn't feel like being so alert right now, and beside that she had checked a couple minutes ago and there were no trees ahead of her for her to run into.

Her ears perked forward a little as she heard the familiar sound of leaves and her nose twitched slightly with the sent of vegetation rather then dirt and rock. She was pleased when she felt her bare feet touch soft, thick grass. She had never really worn shoes, she didn't really need to. Her feet rarely got cut, and for some reason didn't get to dirty either, so it really didn't matter. She also preferred to feel the cool grass on her skin over shoes that she had tried on once.

Still not caring to look up she walked a few more feet curving to the side a little. When she felt the ground under her feet change to something hard she slowly opened her eyes a little looking down at the paved path she had wandered on to. She blinked a couple of times trying to think of why there would be a paved path. She rarely even saw those paths most of the times. Although Yuki had told her things would be a little different at this school then what she was used to.

She slowly opened her eyes all the way and looked up at the scenery around her. Her eyes got a little wide and she came to a halt. The sun made her bright green eyes stand out wonderfully against her hair that looked fiery when the sun also shone on it. The building she was looking at was huge, and not far off was the even larger coliseum. She had been around big buildings before, but she didn't think her school would be like this.

The next thing she noticed after the large buildings was the spell that was around the entire area. She thought she felt something different with the environment, but she didn't think it was a spell. She apparently still had a lot to learn about magic. She narrowed her eyes a little irritated now. She liked nature a lot, and she found it almost wrong to try and change it. She just wasn't used to it. She had lived around natural things for so long that altering things bothered her a little.

She looked down some so that she was looking forward again. She scanned the area noticing all of the plant life. Although it seemed to be lacking in animals, which was her favorite part about forests and woods. There were some here and there, but not as many as she found in the wild. However she was at least grateful that not everything was dirt and stone.

She lowered her head a little more so that she was looking down towards the ground making a few pieces of her hair fall in her face. Her ears went back only a little as she looked off to the side to stare at a man sitting on the ground sketching something. She glanced over at a girl that was starting to walk past him. It took her a moment, but she finally decided the girl was a golem. The guy seemed normal enough, so she turned her attention to something else.

She spotted a girl that just so happened to be looking at the same people she was looking at. Her attention immediately went to the man standing next to her. Her ears laid back a little more and her eyes narrowed again as she stared at the man right in the eyes her grip tightening around her katana. Her tail flicked once behind her showing her annoyance. There was just something about that guy that she didn't like. Her expression became less harsh as she focused on the girl now. She seemed a little different from most girls she had seen. The difference was she actually looked like she was seriously thinking about something. She became a little curious about the girl, but she wasn't going to ponder the thought all day.

She looked forward again solemnly and continued walking down the path heading towards the school. She already wanted to leave this place. She only walked a couple yards before she sneered at the pavement and then stepped off to the side so she would be walking in the grass again.

She wasn't far from the building when she immediately halted again with her ears perking forward as she watched a girl come skipping out of the front doors of the building she was heading towards. She was a little surprised to see some one as short as she was, so at first she guessed that the girl was a couple years younger than her. She narrowed her eyes examining the girl more closely and seemed a little surprised again when she came to the conclusion that the other girl looked like she was in fact close to her age too. She continued walking towards the building thinking about the chances of seeing another girl about her size and about her age.

She turned onto the paved path again only to walk up the steps to the front doors or what might be her new home for a while. She gently pushed open one of the doors with her right hand that was holding her katana. She slipped inside quietly letting go of the door so that it wouldn't make to much noise and she swiftly walked over to the front desk. She wanted as few people to notice her as possible. She looked to the seats on the left and then on the right seeing only a couple of people there.

She walked up to the counter where the lady behind the counter who was smiling at her warmly. She just stared back at the lady blankly for a moment. It seemed to take effort but finally the edge of her mouth tilted up a little in a smile and she made her ears perk forward slightly. When the lady asked what her name was she answered clearly but in a low tone so nobody else would hear her, "kadatsu Dasson." The lady gathered up a few papers and handed them to her along with a key that had a number on it. She switched her katan over to her left hand so sh ecould take the papers and key in her right. She guessed that was the number on the key was her dorm number.

She thanked the lady and smiled at her a little again before turning and walking away. She went down the right hall seeing a bunch of closed doors with numbers on the walls next to them. She had turned a couple of times going down a few other short halls and walked all the way to the end of this last hall she was on. She couldn't believe how big this place was. Thankfully it wasn't so big that she would get lost. As long as she remembered what halls she had come down.

She stopped at the last room at the very end of this hall right in front of a door that had the numbers 149 on the wall next to it. She looked over her shoulder at the door across from hers that was labeled 150. She was sure there were more rooms than this, but they were probably down different halls. She looked back at her room door and unlocked the door. She opened the door a crack and peeked inside. She swung the door wide open dropping her bag and papers on the ground only holding her katana in her left hand. Her ears laid back as she jumped in quickly seeing nothing in the room then she swung her closet door open and then the closet door of what would belong to her roommate.

When she decided that nothing in the room was a threat her ears drooped down lazily again and she went back and picked up her bag and papers closing and locking the door behind her. The room was empty of personal items telling her that her roommate had not yet settled in. If she was lucky, she wouldn't get a roommate. Her favorite thing about this room was that it had a window that had a wonderful view outside. She set her black bag on her bed and put her katana on another part of the bed. She opened her bag pulling out about 6 bottles filled with different liquids and herbs setting them next to her katana, and then pulled out a 2 foot long pipe, a chain, a strip of leather, and black leather armguards that she also set next to her katana. She picked up these items and went over organizing them in her closet. She then stood in front of the closet with her back to it and watched out the window making sure nobody was there before it looked like she pulled a couple things out of her pants and tossed them onto the ground before quickly closing the closet doors so nobody could see what it was even if someone had been standing right there. Two knives stood straight up stuck in the ground where she had thrown them down in the closet.

She walked back over to her bag and continued unpacking her few belongings. She took out a few more pairs of black cloths and what looked like a folded cloak so that she could store them in one of the drawers on her nightstand that was next to her bed. The only things left in her bag were a bunch of candles and a candle holder which she put in the other drawer to her nightstand. She took her black bag and shoved it under her bed before walking over and opening the window. The window was a pretty decent size for most windows she had seen in rooms like these. It was in fact the perfect size for what she was going to do next.

She hopped up onto the windowsill sitting down with her left leg propped up and the other handing down outside the window. Her tail gently curled over to hang down outside of the window next to her leg flicking to the side every once in a while. She had her right hand grasping the windowsill tightly for balance and her left arm resting on her propped up leg. She stared outside loving the wonderful green scenery. Through the trees she could even see the paved path that led to the front of the building and those few people she had seen outside when she was coming up. Her ears perked forward as the wind lightly blew her hair around and she smiled slightly; this time the smile was real.

As the little figure meandered through the woods, other things were moving along with her. Her cheery tune was cut off quickly at the sound of a twig breaking and she wheeled around, looking at the spot that the sound came from. Backing up, she found herself caught on a branch, and tried to tug her jacket off of it. A shadow moved quickly by however, and she screamed, falling back with all of her weight, tearing her hoodie as she turned to run. One watching would note that she didn't stumble like most humans would, but simply found the right spots to stand, even in her panicked state. As she reached a clearing she slowed down, finally sitting down beside a convenient rock that was just the right size for a sitting-down-beside or climbing-onto. Her attention was not on the rock however, but on her hoodie. With a cry of dismay she tugged it off, looking at the rip and and wiping her eyes. Her attempts at stemming off the tears were a failure however, and many slipped by, falling onto the mourned hoodie.
"I failed him..."

She had only been sitting quietly on the widow sill for a minute or so when she heard a scream and her eyes shot open and her ears perked forward. In 4 seconds flat she had turned, jumped off the window sill, ran to her closet, grabbed her katana, and jumped back into the window. Her ears laid back flat and she snarled a little as her tail flicked to one side and she sat up a little to tie the leather strap around her waist hooking the katana onto it. She jumped out of the window and started running towards the sound she had heard.

She skid to a stop when she reached the clearing in the front of the school and started walking past the clearing casually with her left hand holding her katana steady. As soon as she was back into the trees on the other side she kicked off the ground and started running again.

She halted all of a sudden again and she sniffed the air a couple of times. She could smell something faint that seemed similar to the sent of that small girl she had seen earlier when she was first walking up to the school. She looked around carefully and noticed a branch that looked like it had been disturbed since a couple of the small pieces looked broken. She leaned over and smelled the branch. That was definitely the girl she had seen before. She studied the ground for a moment and now had a trail to follow not only of her sent, but of the tracks on the ground.

Rather then staying on foot she jumped up into a tree and started jumping around from branch to branch following the trail. Even though she was in the trees, this didn't slow her down in the least. She had to stop as the trees cleared out and she slowly peekd out into the clearing. She saw the girl looking down at her jacket like she was really upset. She had no clue why the girl would be so upset over a jacket, but she didn't care at the moment.

After first looking around carefully to see if anything else was around she jumped down to the ground without making a sound and she made her way around he clearing staying hidden in the trees so that she was on the other side of the rock that the girl was sitting at. She quietly walked out into the clearing with her hand still on her katana and crept up behind the girl. She peeked around the rock and saw that there was a rip in the jacket, which would explain the branch that was half broken.

She quietly hopped up on top of the rock and crouched down looking down at the girl. Then she jumped off of the rock landing in front of the girl not even thinking of the possibility of surprising her and she gently ran her fingers over the rip in the hoody. She looked up at the girl with a dull expression and half narrowed eyes, "...I can fix that...if you like..."

Upon hearing the movements and seeing the shadow of another being, the girl jumped, startled while pulling the hoodie closer to herself. Instead of using the hoodie in question as a shield, however, she instead clutched it to her body as though considering it the last thing to be harmed on her person.
Upon hearing the words, and seeing the... non-hostile reaction from the other female, she let go of her hold on it a tiny bit, looking at the new person while wondering how they got there. Deciding that the person was nobody scary, she held out the hoodie, offering it to her rather timidly, as though scared that what had happened would only get worse.
"Can you really? If so... please do."
The girl never looked at any of the 'differences' that were evident in this other being, either from a note of not caring, or from the inability to classify others due to their looks, or lack their of.
