"Peter not Piper"

There once was a Peter
who lived next to a Piper.
All day long the Piper toiled,
and Peter next door would watch;
for Peter, not Piper,
liked the bush of pickled peppers.

Then one day Piper looked up
and caught his neighbor staring.
"You there!" he called out,
"Have you nothing better to do,
than to watch me work?
Have you no work of your own?"

But Peter called back,
"Nay, I have done my work already,
for my shift is in the early morning;
but if I've offended you, I do apologize --
though in truth, I was actually
admiring all your lovely peppers!"

"If it's my peppers you like,
my boy, then why not help me?"
The other man cried out with a smile.
"I am old and cannot pick as fast as I used to;
and if you do well by me, my daughter you'll marry!"

"I am honored, good sir,
that for the picking a few pecks of picked peppers,
you would entrust your daughter to me;" Peter replied.
"But how can you know that I am an honest man, worthy of her hand,
or that she will even care to marry me?"

But the Piper only laughed merrily.
"Any man who is so concerned with character,
ready without hesitation to admit to a possible slight,
and is naturally concerned about the desires of another,
would be fit for my little girl; and as for your honesty,
your parents proudly speak well of you to all of their friends!"

And that, my good friends,
is really why Peter,
not Piper, not Peter Piper,
picked a peck of pickled peppers one day.
For when he saw the Piper's daughter,
it was love at first sight.
