I can read and understand, just have a hard time putting together sentences.

I have that same issue too. I don't think I ever properly learned Spanish, despite my father being Mexican.
I think what helped was the countless of vacations I spent in Mexico when I was little.

I am only learning because we are teaching Leo.
He knows more than I do!
