Administrative work, mostly. Sometimes things pop up and I'll get calls after work asking me about stuff that went on at work though. Thankfully it doesn't happen often, I hate having to do work-related stuff when I'm trying to relax.

I tried for a translating job but it turns out I don't really have the knack for it. Hopefully you'll have much better luck than I did though!

ah, cool! i've always liked administrative work when i've done it in the past, but i've definitely found the only policy for me with it is to never take calls when i'm at home unless it's been discussed beforehand at work. it doesn't help that i have a phone phobia too sdfgdf. i can get over it when i have a script, like when i'm calling to collect payments or answering questions and taking reservations over the phone, but freeform phone conversations really shake me.

translation is my dream!! i'm really hoping i can get a job doing it, i could be happy my entire life doing that honestly. or at least for many years.

Ugh I hate phone calls too. I'm just glad my current job doesn't currently have me phoning clients and stuff. (I'm sure I'll eventually have to do it, but for now not yet ) At my last few jobs one of the things I hated the most was hearing the phone go off. I feel as though my blood pressure immediately skyrocket whenever I hear the phone ring. At my current job all the phone calls I get are from the manager, most of the time.

Yay for having the passion! According to the translation agency I applied to a couple months ago, translating takes a lot of passion to do.

that is good! i've worked 2 office jobs and one of them was like all phone calls all the time, the other one was almost always just people asking for my boss lmao.

makes sense! languages are a lot of work.

Phone calls all the time...just thinking about it made my pulse raise.

Yeah...I never knew how difficult translating was until I tried to actually translate everything. Sometimes the grammar just doesn't work or the phrase just sounds funny and I have no idea how to fix it.

yeah, that's one of my favorite things about it solving the puzzle, bending the words so that even if it's not a direct translation, the meaning is able to get through... it can be very artistic, if you approach it the right way. the hardest thing for me right now is learning colloquial speech and idioms; those are the hardest to translate.

Colloquials and idioms, ugh. Yeah, those are a pain to translate. It's sometimes hard keeping true to the source, I try to keep it as close to the original meaning as possible, but phrased in a different way, and the translation agency I applied to still said it was off the mark and not sticking to the original wording enough.

interesting! i'm hoping i'll be able to learn the way people expect things to be translated in my translation classes... because i can do word-for-word, but it won't capture the emotion or tone correctly. :/

Yeah, that's what's so hard about translation...sometimes things just gets lost in translation despite our best attempts. I can nearly always tell when a book has been translated from English to Chinese because of how awkward the phrases are or how the way it's written made it clear it wouldn't be the way native speakers would say it.

yeah, yeah totally! ugh and like when i was reading Les Miserables... you know there were so many subtleties in Victor Hugo's writing that just completely got lost. that's why i'm waiting until i'm Spanish literate to read the Spanish versions of translated books that are originally in Spanish sdjfgdfs. I tried reading Don Quixote once and i was just like :// mmmmm not yet. i'm really hoping i'll be able to be the type of translator where it's harder to tell, but it all depends on my boss i'm sure.

It's one of the reasons why I prefer reading books written in English in English as well.
I wish I were Japanese literate so I can read all the manga and light novels in the original language, but alas.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you find a great boss to work with!

oh TOTALLY!! i don't read as much manga or watch anime as i used to, but i used to dream so much of being able to read it in the original Japanese.

thanks, i hope so too! and i hope i'm able to even find a job hahah.

Yeah, I tried learning Japanese but discovered that I totally lack a talent in learning languages. I can pronounce most hiragana and katakana but most of the time their meanings escape me. I mostly just guess from the kanji what they mean since they sometimes share similar meanings with Chinese.

Been reading some Korean manhua (I think that's what they call them? manga for Japanese comics, manhua for Korean/Chinese comics...?? ) lately, some of them're pretty interesting.

Oh yeah, heard that the economy's not great in the states (or anywhere, really...), so I guess I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you for both finding a great job and finding a great boss!

I have no idea what their names in English are, as I read them in Chinese.

One is about a plain-looking girl who learns the magic of make up and becomes pretty and I guess is a sort of slice-of-life type of story, one is a series of mostly horror or horror-related short stories, and one is about a bullied 'loser' who one day suddenly woke up in a 'perfect' body (but his old body is still there, he can just switch between them whenever he falls asleep in one of them)

I used to read one that had werewolves or something in it but I stopped reading it years ago and pretty much forgot what it's about...I also used to read one called The Gamer (I think it's a pretty popular series, saw references of it on a couple of other sites) but I stopped reading that one a while ago too...

lol Thank you I guess
