I love Seinfeld! Haven't seen it in a while, either. A Seinfeld marathon is definitely on my bucket list :)

This holiday is Lulz. If you read up on it it's kinda got that Scientology feel. Someone thought they could make money from uninformed people.

Scientology 8D

Just googled the origins of the holiday. That's an interesting background

Happy Kwanzaa, Ava!
Ummmm....when do we eat?
What's on the menu?....I never thought I'd say it, but I am so sick of HAM!
We had ham at Thanksgiving, and ham for Christmas...and leftover ham between the holidays, and I have ham in my fridge right now!
I really could use a change of pace for my tastebuds! Lol!

I don't know much about scientology.

And while, I do think this holiday can be unnecessary, I do think it's nice to have a few days of the year where black people can celebrate their African pride, even if some of them argue they aren't African.... *cough*Raven*cough*

Today's principle is: Kujichagulia (Self Perservation). :D

happy Kwanzaa. and I hope you realize that now you've started you're going to have to make this an annual event

also, I found this really cool video explanation of the seven principles. its not as in-depth as the Villanova lectures (or as political) but its shows the meat of the gravy in a fun and amusingly interesting way

Hujambo? Happy 2nd night of Kwanzaa! We don't celebrate it in our house but I read children books about it to my children. I enjoy that it talks about togetherness.

Oh! That sounds awesome, Liunesta.

I don't celebrate in my house either, but apparently I have some family members who do!
My mom got a call from her brother today and he said, "Happy Kwanzaa" and I called my aunt and they went over the principles of Kwanzaa together for Christmas.

So, I guess my family will start to celebrate.

I enjoy the fact that Kwanzaa is about togetherness and pride.
There aren't many opportunities out there for black Americans to feel proud of their heritage. Oftentimes, black people have less advantages and have no connection to African culture and are stuck in limbo of not being "American" but not being "African".

I like that Kwanzaa creates a way for African Americans to feel proud and gives them some connection to a culture they lost.

My family is kinda on the end of being black vs African American. At least my dad is. I think how amazing it is for people who still have their African last names vs those of us who have what was given to our ancestors. I'm really curious what part of Africa my ancestors are from. I'd love to do one of those DNA tests to find out!

Happy Third Day of Kwanzaa!

I've been pretty busy, off-line,...so I haven't done any research about Kwanzaa, but from what I've learned from this thread, already, I think there's some white folks who could learn a thing or 2 from what Kwanzaa represents.

So...tell this uninformed white girl how many days Kwanzaa lasts! Lol!

Happy 3rd day of Kwanzaa! Today's principle is Umija, meaning collective work and responsibility. There are 7 days of Kwanzaa. The concept of Kwanzaa is nice, but our community, and others, would do well to practice some of the principles ALL year long.

happy third day of Kwanzaa. I'm looking forward to the day when this holiday is recognized internationally as a celebration of heritage, its such a great idea that it should be shared, especially the principles

they remind me much of the tenets we use in martial arts. the style I practice is called Sam Tu Dang, meaning triangle of light. its founder is originally from Barbados, but spent most of his youth travelling Asia. so the teachings are a mix of Chinese philosophies and Afro-Caribbean culture

Sounds interesting. I'll have to google it. I do like the idea of Kwanzaa, but I like the idea of celebrating our heritage and culture all year round too.
