Yeah, you should see how many people freak out about destroying excess books. WHICH IS SO DUMB IN A WORLD OF MASS PRODUCED BOOKS!

I admit, I twitch a little when I hear about destroying excess books. Surely there is somewhere those books could go? At least have a book sale first, or donate them to a charity!
And yes, time for a page prize!

Elirona, congrats! You get the prize!

I get kind of upset when people get upset over excess books being destroyed.
Thanks, Chex!

Most of the books that are destroyed tend to be things like: 101 ways to cook a rutebega. No one WANTS them, or they'd have been bought already. And when they get destroyed, they usually recycle the paper, which is good for the environment. Better than shuffling unwanted books off on already overwhelmed charities.

Fair enough. I actually don't know a whole lot about that kind of book destruction. It's just an uninformed knee-jerk response on my part.

Yeah, I agree with that, Steel. Better to just use the books for something else.

Almost all bibliophiles have that kind of response. I did too, to be honest. But I'm a natural researcher so anything that bothers me, I usually spend hours researching. And then I learned more about it and it made sense.

You know, unless you want 400 copies of the same terrible trashy romance novel.

Yeah, but usually you want more than just the same one over and over again.
I hate romance novels so much.

One of the reasons I like zombie books so much is they usually don't have much of a love component.

I...might want that. I don't know what I would do with them, but I would do something! Art! Something!

Aw, I love romance novels. I admit that I'm a romantic, so I always enjoy a good love component in my stories, but I view the romance genre as a secret humor genre. There's something about them that's just sublime.

There ARE some lovely book sculptures out there. But sometimes people freak out about those too.
Like this is GORGEOUS!
But Brian Detter gets a lot of hate mail for "destroying books".

Totally gorgeous!
It looks like that particular one is an old encyclopedia or dictionary, which frankly is a great use for those, since no one reads or needs those anymore. If it were some rare, hard to find, historic edition of something, I think that's the only time I would be mad about that kind of book arts. I doubt that guy would do that though. XD
I bought an old edition of a philosophy book at a used book store once, and the cashier asked me if I was going to do art with it. I said no, I thought it was pretty and wanted to read it, and he said "Oh thank god! I get so many art students in here wanting to do projects with old books." At the time, I kinda agreed with him, but now, his outrage makes me laugh.

Exactly! No one is wanting to use rare, valuable books for these things. But people freak out anyway, haha.
It made sense in the days when the printing press was new and books were extremely expensive and all of them were rare. But not so much now. Now, there are thousands of books and with self publishing, they don't even have to be halfway decent to get printed.
