The priest nodded thoughtfully. "I would come check it out myself my child, but I can't leave town right now. Let me know if anything else comes up." She nodded in agreement and they both continued to eat.

(brain fart, it will be better next time))

The cafe owner returned with a big bowl of corn chowder and a large mug of coffee, with lots of sugar in it. "Thank you SO much," Jessica said with a smile. She took a spoonful of corn chowder. Mmm, this is delicious. The owner smiled, before turning to check on other customers.

They talked quietly of other things. The priest finding ways to get the girl's mind off the day. She finally seemed relaxed. He was worried though. That pasture was not far from the canyon where her father had died. The day before he had died, he had mentioned to him a cut fence with small footprints. He hadn't always been a priest. Things like this seemed unimportant to some, but he knew better. There was no such thing as coincidence.

She finally pushed back from the table and stood. Smiling in thanks she said, Thanks for supper Father. I best be getting back. He grinned and motioned her out. She turned with a lighter heart and headed outside. She patted Shakespeare and mounted up. The twinkling stars above were beautiful. She turned to head out of town the way she had come earlier. Maybe Jake would be done and heading out and they could ride together.

Jessica finished her food and got up to pay the cafe owner. She handed him the money, thanked him again for the food, and left. Outside, she looked around her, the lights were off in the sheriff's office so she knew that Chase had gone home. The air was cool and pleasant, the had disappeared over the horizon. Her town was quieting down as many headed to bed.

She thought of going back to the stables to check on the horses, but she knew Monty could take care of them. She trusted him, it was more that some nights, no matter how tired she was, she was still edgy. The town was silent and there was nothing to take care of, she might as well head home.

Riding to the edge of town, she neared the library. Yep, there was Jack. He was just now mounting up as he said his goodbyes. She rode over and called out, "Howdy folks. Nice evening." Jack turned and waved to her, "Hey boss. Your just in time to ride back with me." She looked over and offered a kind word to the librarian's daughter, "Have a good tutor session hon?" The librarian's daughter, Eliza, looked up and responded, "Yep. It is always good to get a different point of view when learning. Helps a lot. You all have a good night." They nodded and turned, heading into a canter towards the ranch.

She walked through town to her house and walked in. She walked into the kitchen and begin making a pot of coffee, she was to edgy to sleep. She sat down at the small kitchen table, and mused over the adventures of the day. A frantic knocking on the door brought her back to earth. The work of a sheriff was never done. She got up with a sigh and went to answer the door.

There is a guy trying to start a fight in the cafe, the kid at the door panted. I think he might be drunk. Jessica nodded and grabbed her gun belt and hat. She closed the door behind her and jogged towards the cafe. If the guy was really drunk he was going to be difficult, but she could handle it. There was no reason to bother Chase, he had had just as busy and tiring day.

Reaching the ranch, they walk into the barn and unsaddle their horses in companionable silence. Brushing them down, they lead them out to the paddock and turn them loose for the night. He waves, "See ya in the morning." She waves back and watches him head to the bunkhouse. The bunkhouse was basically a small house. Each hand had their own room off of a main room. She walked up to the house. Mary was still up. She grimaced and put on a brave face. Time to face the maiden of hell herself.

Jessica saw two wrestling figures illuminated in front of the cafe, they looked like young guys. As she got closer, she saw a teenage girl standing back out of the way with her hands over her mouth. What is going on here? She asked coming to a stop. They fighting guys paid her no attention but the girl ran to her. Stop them Sheriff, please before someone gets hurt, the girl begged.

Jessica pulled her gun from its holster and fired a shot into the air. The boom from the gun sent the startled guys stumbling apart. Now, anyone want to tell me what this is all about? She asked, nailing them each with a stern eye. Well ma'am, one of the guys said. He was hitting on my girl.

Jessica snorted and asked, sarcastically, And that seemed like a good reason to hit him? The speaker looked down bashfully. Listen boys, she said, holstering her gun. There are better ways to solve your problems then fighting. Anger leads to people getting hurt and even killed. She turned her attention to the boyfriend. As for you. Don't you trust your girl to be able to handle it and to tell him to get lost? The young man nodded slowly.

Alright boys, I want you two to report to the stables in the morning. You'll be cleaning stalls, but trust me, if I catch you two fighting again the consequences will be worse. Now go home. She waited for the three to disappear in the directions of their homes before turning back to hers. She dropped into a chair at the kitchen table and stared down into her cup of coffee.

Closing her bedroom door, she breathed a sigh of relief. What in darnation had gotten into Mary? She had lectured her worse than she had predicted about running off, by herself, to town and then not being around for supper. Sighing, she walked across the room stripping as she went. Mary sure did seem to have a bee up her skirt over a cut fence. What was it about a cut fence that had her up in arms? First the priest and now her? Both were the age her parents would have been. Maybe for some reason they felt it their duty to try to fill in the gap. Whatever the reason. She washed up, blew out the lamp, and crawled into bed.

Finishing her coffee, she put away the cup and climbed the stairs wearily. In her room, she stripped and washed up, before blowing out the lights and climbing into bed. She lay on her back staring at the ceiling, wondering what tomorrow would bring. Some days, she felt more like a babysitter than a sheriff, fixings everyone's problems. She sighed and rolled onto her side, thinking about the morning. She would need to tell Monty about the boys coming, he could deal with them.

Waking up early to the smell of a delicious breakfast already cooking away, she quickly got up and dressed. Heading downstairs determined to be cheery, she entered the kitchen and found not only the food finished but the table set. What happened to needing her help? Mary stood there tapping her food and looking very stubborn. Mindy raised and eyebrow and went to stand by her chair. She was about to ask what was going on when the ranch hands and Jake came stumbling in faster than a rattler after a mouse. They came and stood by the table as well. Mary then and only then primly said, "Good morning. Welcome to breakfast. Please, take a seat."

Dawn brought her awake and out of bed. She dressed and grabbed her hat and gun belt, putting them on on her way down the stairs. She stopped at the door, and glanced at the kitchen, debating making coffee and breakfast. She decided that she better get over to the barn and make sure that Monty was ready for the boys.

She walked into the stables, to the greeting nickers of the sleepy horses and climbed the stairs to Monty's room in the loft. Monty, she called, knocking on the door. The door opened and Monty's handsome face greeted her. What's up boss, he asked, concern etching his face. Relax Monty. I encountered some fighting teens last night and told them to report here for stall cleaning this morning, she explained.

Monty nodded and relaxed, studying her face. How are you doing? You look really tired. Concern and caring filled Monty's inquiry. Late night last night, Jessica said, shrugging it off. I should head over to the office. She turned and started down the stairs, turning back at the sound of Monty's voice. You should go over to the cafe and get some breakfast.

Mary sternly pushed more and more food on them until they couldn't eat another bite. Then she oversaw them as they cleaned up the kitchen afterwards. She was so stern and picky that no one had the courage to ask her what she was up to. The next thing they knew, they were running back and forth cleaning the entire house. She kept pushing them. Jake was on his hands and knees scrubbing the porch as Mindy took some stuff out to the burn pile. He whispered as she passed by, "I think this is for all the worry we put her through yesterday. This is her way of getting even and keeping us nearby and in sight." Mindy grimaced and nodded in silent agreement. They had to escape.

I need to get over to the office, she said, brushing off the idea of breakfast. There would be coffee at the office and she needed to get to work. Chase can take care of it, go eat, Monty commanded, his eyes showing that he wasn't joking. Jessica sighed, knowing that he was right and she needed to eat.

She left the stables and went to the cafe. The owner smiled when he saw her walk in and disappeared into the kitchen. Jessica sat down on the bar and rested her elbows on its smooth surface. The owner returned with a cup of coffee and a large plate of flapjacks. That should fill you up, he said, setting the plate down in front of her. I don't want to see you gone until that plate is empty.

Mindy walked into the house and handed Mary the bucket she had just emptied. "Well Mary, this house is looking great. You have done a wonderful job. Now, I promised the priest I would go give him a hand today. I was going to have Jake escort me, but you have been needing a lot of help today..."

Mary glared at her, and then sighed. "Alright hon, go on and git. Take Jake with you. You don't come back without him you hear." She turned and walked away. Roger and Pete glared at her from where they were cleaning in the livingroom. Roger mouthed "Traitor" quietly at her while Pete just scrubbed harder. She gave them the sorry look and fled.

Jessica was working on her plate of flapjacks when Chase walked in. He spotted her and walked over, ordering a cup of coffee before seating down next to her. What's up? Jessica asked in concern. Chase smiled, Relax, nothing is wrong. Just thought I would get some coffee.

Jessica nodded and tried to relax. She was feeling edgy and wasn't at all sure why. She tried to shake it off and continued eating. She picked up her coffee and took a gulp, washing down her mouthful of flapjacks.

Mindy and Jake rode out of the yard and towards town at a canter. Flying along the country rode, they enjoyed a few minutes of pleasure before slowing down to walk. Mindy asked Jake, "So how was the tutor session last night?" Jake shook his head and shrugged, "Nothing I care to repeat. Sure, we had textbooks on our laps. However the librarian was practically pushing her daughter at me and the daughter didn't mind one bit. I rather not go through that again." Mindy felt a twinge of jealousy at that but didn't say much. Technically the librarian was part of one of the large families in town. The Kennults.

They glided smoothly in town. He waved goodbye to her and turned towards the cafe to catch up on the local gossip. She turned towards the mission. Reaching it, she stabled Shakespeare and headed inside. It was calm and cool. Seeing the priest, she walked over, "I wouldn't mind a little meditating today Father." He turned and grinned, "Well let me unlock the prayer garden for you dear." He led her to a high walled in area and unlocked the thick gate. Shutting the door behind her after giving her the key, he went on his way with a click echoing as he departed.

Mindy looked around the prayer garden. It was actually more than that. Going to a shed, she retrieved her throwing knives that she kept here and started to practice. The use of blades, any blade, was something she felt extremely confident in. Thanks to the former assassin that lived here. No one would suspect a priest of having such deadly skill.

The morning passed calmly and peacefully for Jessica. It was one of those lazy days where the sheriff and deputy kind of seat around, maybe play a bit of checkers. About mid-afternoon Chase and Jessica were jolted out of their lethargy by galloping hoof beats and whooping and hollering. Sheriff and Deputy raced out onto the porch of the Sheriff's office to see a group of about ten to twelve cowboys come thundering down main street.

Jessica scanned over them, reading what there was to read. She quickly realized what that they were cowboys returning from a cattle drive. They had money in their pockets and were free after several months of herding cattle. One old grizzled cowboy came trotting respectfully into town a little ways behind the others. He smiled and tipped his hat to Jessica as soon as he saw here. She smiled and nodded back at him before turning his attention to horse, a beautiful chunky built chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail. The mare danced, neck arched, but yet she responded to the cowboy's every command. The gentlest twitch of the hackamore had her slowing or turning.

The cowboy halted the mare in front of Jessica and Chase. I'm right sorry about them ma'am, he said apologetically, motioning to the lot pulled up in front of the cafe. Been a long couple of months and their prett' near crazed with energy. Jessica smiled, understanding. As long as they don't go causing trouble, they should be fine.

The priest stopped in near lunch time. Watching Mindy working on her attacks, he walked over to give her a hand. They spent the rest of the morning with him giving her the workout of a lifetime. Walking her through the basic paces and then sparring together, he forced her to stay on her toes. One thing was simple. If she ever needed to use these skills, it would be involving people who would show no mercy.

Do ya know wheres I could find a place ta stable my horse ma'am?" The grizzled old cowboy asked politely. Jessica smiled, I think we can find a nice stall or paddock at the livery for this fine, well trained mare. The cowboy beamed at the praise of his mare. She be a fine animal, ain't she? he replied.

I will walk you over to the stables, Jessica said with a smile, sending Chase a nod that told him he was in charge until she got back. She stepped down of the porch and led the cowboy and horse down the street. What is this fine animals name? she asked, rubbing the horse's arched neck. I calls her Honey, the cowboy answered with pride.

They reached the stables and the cowboy slid off his horse. The mare turned her head and nuzzled his shoulder, nickering gently to her owner. He rubbed up under her forelock, crooning to her as Monty came walking out of the stables. We've got a fine animal, looking for a nice place to rest, Jessica told him. Turning to the cowboy, she asked, Would Honey like a stall or a paddock?

What do ya think Honey girl, inside or out? The mare bobbed her head and then nuzzled him again. That be just as I thought Honey girl, we's been sleepin' outside fur months now. You want a nice stall ta relax in. He grinned first at his mare and then at Jessica. Jessica grinned back, liking this sweet cowboy and his love of his horse.

Monty, we'll move Bellisario to a paddock and put Honey in his stall. Its the nicest and roomiest, she said to the grizzled old cowboy. There ain't no need to take anot'er's place, he said quickly. Jessica laughed, Trust me Bellisario will be happy to give up his stall for such a beautiful, well behaved mare.

Exhausted from their workout. Mindy waved good bye to the priest. He went to shower off while she headed to the cafe. As she walked down the street, the breeze cooling her down, she saw the librarian watching her. She waved to her, "Hey Libby!" The lady didn't wave back, but proceeded to cross the street towards her. Reaching Mindy, Libby said, "Morning. You are looking very, energetic, today. Have a pleasant time with Jake?" Mindy shrugged, "Actually I was working over at the mission. Jake and I only rode in together." Libby nodded, "Is that so. Well have a good day Mindy." Mindy waved and headed to the cafe for lunch. Something about that whole exchange gave her the creeps.

Jessica nodded to Monty who disappeared inside to let Bellisario out of his stall, since they both knew that the first place the stallion would go was to Jessica. From the dimness of the stables came the stallion's bugling cry and then the sound of hoof beats. Moments later the stallion burst from the dimness of the barn, his black coat glistening in the sunlight. He barely flicked an ear at the mare as he galloped to Jessica's side, coming to a halt in front of her.

He be a real beaut, the cowboy said, eyeing the stallion up and down. Bellisario turned his head at the sound of the man, finally taking in the visitors. The stallion bobbed his head as if to say, "I am good looking aren't I." The cowboy laughed a rough but not unpleasant laugh. Not a bit humble, is he.

Mindy entered the cafe and took a seat by one of the large windows. She settled in and glanced outside, then started. Glaring from across the street was none other than Mrs. Libby. A second later Jake entered and greeted the newcomers in town. She glanced at him, then back outside into Mrs. Libby's face. Surely the lady didn't have a crush on Jake. He was old enough to be his mother. In fact, she remembered bits of conversations between her parents about Libby, but not the details. She had been a child after all.

Bellisario nudged Jessica before prancing down the street a bit, turning back to look at her, begging for some fun. Jessica shot a glance at Monty and as always he understood what was on her mind and nodded. He would make sure that the cowboy's mare got settled in so she might as well go have some fun. She turned and gave a short, shrill whistle. Bellisario whirled with a rear and galloped towards her, aiming past her. As the stallion came abreast of her, Jessica grabbed his mane and let his momentum snap her into the air and onto his back.

They thundered a ways down the street, before Jessica signaled the stallion and he came to a sliding halt, whirling back the way they had come at another signal. This time Jessica held him to a prancing trot, halting him again in front of the stables where the cowboy stood grinning from ear to ear. Yer a mighty fine rider ma'am, he said. It shore was nice to watch you two work.

Jessica felt her cheeks heat at the praise. She never did this to show-off and most of the time was oblivious to anything but the stallion underneath her. Thank you, she said politely, trying not to feel uncomfortable. She touched the stallion's neck and walked away towards an empty paddock, the stallion following right along behind her.

The cafe owner brought her lunch. Today was mashed potatoes and noodles. She dug in and started to wolf them down. Jake saw her and walked over. Taking a seat, he motioned the owner for some lunch as well. Then he turned and took in her downcast face, "What happened to you? You look like someone wants to punch you." She looked up and grimaced, "Libby might. I think she has taken a fancy to you and wants me out of the picture." He shook his head. "Might I point out, her daughter is the one I'm tutoring? I don't think you have a think to worry ab...." A gunshot split the air and glass from the window flew every where. Jake automatically covered his face from the flying shards. Looking at the window and across the street, he didn't see anyone there. Then he turned and his stomach dropped. Mindy was on the floor holding her left shoulder, blood pooling beneath her.
