but if they just charged for that, they'd get nothing. since so many people are buying ebooks, the price is simply demand.

Kalium, places like Amazon.com pay the publishers/authors that hold the copyright.
The only books they give out for free are those that are so old that there is no copyright... like Jane Austen, Dostoyevsky, Charles Dickens, etc...
