The device lit up for a few seconds for no reason—which is a thing that happens, and I guess it's updating—and then, after that, it told her she had a new message. So she went in the app and found a message from someone she hath not spoken to in years. Someone she never knew closely at all. In the message, a little girl's voice said, "Stop watching us."
She and her awesome husband unplugged their Echo and have not used it since.
