This is a rp between myself and AngleFish.

Name: Kieren Miller
Age: 23
Race: human
Job: Mechanic and robotics programmer
Ship: The Nexis Blue, ship class explorer and transport vessel.

-------------------------------------------------------

The ship was state of the art for space travel, to land a job of any position on this baby was a dream come true for Kieren and his band of friends. Settling into the shares cabins had been easy for the group as they'd shared barrics before at school and had grown up together.

Bozzi was their 'leader' and a typical solider grunt, he for a security slot, Izzy was a wiz when it came to piloting a big ship like this with many people all working together to get the ship to even more. Morris worked in the kitchens providing food for the ship, Oril worked in the engines, maintaining them and so on. Kieren was a mechanic, a all around mechanic yet he specialized in Robotics programming and software and hardware interface. He had nee granted a job to help keep the ship running smoothly by making sure the AI and computers where running smoothly throughout the ship.

The first week on the ship after the launch had gone so smoothly that the 5 friends couldn't believe their luck, more so with the ships projected run going through some unexplored planets in the outer quad. Kieren was in his element helping the senior robotics officer with a project he had been tasked with, building a body for the ships AI, some of the crew found it odd just talking to a empty room when they were talking to the AI.

The room the body was being built in was a escape pod of sorts aswell, the officer wanted to preserve his work in any situation. That made it the first room for Kieren to think of when the ship was hit by a rouge asteroid cluster, the kitchens with their explosive cook wear was the first place to be hit. Morris lost his arm in the explosion. Oril was trapped in the engines deck and was yelling at them to get to the escape pods as fast as they could before the reactor blew. Bozzi hauled a unconscious Morris into the lab with a bad cut on his own shoulder and one of his eyes badly bleeding aswell.

"Kieren get this thing ejected already!" Bozzi shouted in pain as he and a crying Izzy strapped into the build in seat on the wall. Izzy had watched her fellow pilots get sucked out when the bridge air locks blew, she had barely made it out, she clutched the ships data pads in her arms as she cried.

Kieren moved over to the console and began to push buttons and enter codes. 'Airlock sealing, please stand by.' the consoles robotic voice sounded, it wasnt the AI.... Kieren hoped that it was smart enough to move it's self and it's files into this room, as this is where it's body was.

"Ejecting Science pod H-8, Please hold on." the robotic voice sounded again as the room shook, from both the explosions and the pod ejecting it's self from the ship. Like all the life pods and escape pods on the ship it was programs to scan for the closest planet and to land there. With in moment the pod was floating away from the exploding Nexis Blue, faintly Kieren could see the outlines of other escape pods, they where all heading to the nearby green planet.

Kieren slumped to the floor....adrenaline still pumping threw him yet he had no will to stand, his legs burned and hurt from the gashes and burns he'd received in a blast and just now he was beginning to feel how they hurt.

"Pod H-8 come in....Pod H-8 this is Commanding officer Greenly." the commanding voice sounding threw the speakers on the console.

"Officer Greenly! Private Bozzi Uncli reporting!" Bozzi struggled to stand and lumbered over to the console.

"Private it's good to see you made it, how many with you?" Greenly asked

"Just myself and three others sir....all but one severely injured." Bozzi reported like the solider he was.

"According to the scanners your groups pod will be landing a bit away's from the rest of us.. stay put where you land, or as close to it as you can. We'll make contact away and see if it's safe to regroup." The officer saluted Bozzi who mimicked it before the console went back to its normal data streams.

Izzy was shakily using a first aid kit to bind the bloodied stump of a shoulder that Morris had left and Morris was thankfully passed out. Bozzi sat down beside Kieren, the pod was moving smoothly, the console informing them about their descent to the planet.

Name: K501E2910-S5729 KES for short
Age: three years
Race: Interactive navigation and Personal Care System/Andriod
Job: The safety and care of the crew and passengers of the The Nexis Blue
Ship:The Nexis Blue, ship class explorer and transport vessel.

The Nexis Blue was leagues above her fellow explorer ships in every category. From it's professional crew to the sleek white finish on the otter halls no other ship came close. It's crowning achievement was it's highly advanced AI navigation and personal are system. K501E2910 was a series S AI the first of it's kind and The Nexis Blue was the only ship to have one installed.

The S series AI took artificial intelligence to a new level. The AI- called by it's creator and senior members of the Nexis's crew as KES- was designed to anticipate the needs of the crew, single handedly run all functions of the ship, as well as monitor the health both mental a physical of all on board. More then that the creator had clamed that she had be able to write in a code that allowed KES to process and even have it's own emotional response. It was a system so advanced that some had made comments about how unnatural or too human like the system was.

Which was why Dr. Orin Burett was brought along on the second voyage of the Nexis Blue. Dr. Burett was a leader in the field of bio medical engineering. It was his latest research paper that had gotten him invited onto the ship to build the first ever android to house the AI system. It also helped that he was married to KES's creator. Melee Burett had spent her whole life dedicated to the study of computer programing and the possibility of true Artificial Life. KES was her pride and joy and she wouldn't allow anyone else to do the transfer but herself.

"Good Morning KES" the lights in the room slowly began to brighten at a rate that allowed the rooms occupants eyes to adjust. "Good Morning Mrs. Burett, Good Morning Dr. Burett." The disembodied voice carried a slight accent, something that hinted at a earth based origin but one would have to first have an understanding on the dead planet's many languages to place it.

The data pad son the end table lit up with news from their home planet, as well as the each of the humans daily schedules. Orrin Burett liked to start his morning off with a look at the positive things going on planet side as well as a few comic strips that he would read over his breakfast. Melee Burett Liked to be up to date on any and all scientific journals and would spend her morning ignoring her breakfast and tinkering with the code for her next AI program.

KES scanned the room reading both of the Burett's hormone levels and over vitals. Orin's lower back muscles were tensed where Melee's blood pressure was slightly lower then average and other scans indicated that she had not properly rested the night before. KES sent a message to the kitchen with the brerakfast order for the Burett's as well as the orders for seven other crew members who were on this wake up rotation.
" May I ask how my new body is coming along?" Shifting through the clothes in their closet the AI choose a pair of boots with good lumbar support for Orin and since today was a day Melee had set aside to work on her newest project a comfortable set of the work out clothes that the crew used in training.

" It's going well. The new mechanic they brought in something else. Once we are finished I might try to snag him for another research project. oh and I'm sure you will approve of the desing. You haven't peeked have you?" Looking up at the ceiling through his glasses Orin gave it the look a father would give his child asking about birthday presents.
" Of course he will I designed it." KES caught and documented the irritation in Melee voice. She had spent hours letting both KES her husband and the board of directors know just how much she was against KES being confined into a body .

" I have not." The AI's voice carried a hint of slyness. While KES had not 'peeked' at the body it was his job to fully analyze every inch of the ship.

Hours later the peaceful first week of the Nexis Blues journey came to an end.

It was only a split second where the asteroids hit and KES diverted all power to stabilizing the shields that the lights and all other functions on the Nexis flickered. It was enough of a glitch for all crew members that had not been aware of the situation to take some kind of action.

Orin had been in the mess hall grabbing a quick lunch when he felt the ship lurch to the side. Something had gone wrong. The ship jerked again in a different direction, by now KES had given up keeping focus on the none essential systems. The lights shut off and the emergency once flickered to life the system running them not use to being needed.

The housing part of the ship was in chaos crew and support staff running every which way, screaming commands or trying to reach other members over their comms. Melee had left with her data pad and a ear piece to talk directly to KES.
" KES! What happened?!"
" we have hit an un charted asteroid field." The Ai sounded strained and almost wounded. She had programed him so deeply into the ship she was worried that he might actually be processes the damage as pain. "I'm heading towards H-8....KES is there any way to save the ship?"

The silence on the other end of her comms wasn't reassuring. "The bridges air lock is gone. There is a 98% chance of total ship destruction the deeper we get into the asteroid field. I high recommended changing course to the nearest pod H-1."

"KES no. I need to get to H-8. Is there a clear path? I have to get you downloaded into that body." Orin would be in H-8, they would all get out of this.

" There is no safe path from your location to H-8. Please make your way towards H-1.The pods will be released soon."

'No I...."

"There is no other course of action that has a survival rate. Please turn right and make you way to pod H-1."

" Is Orin in H-8? is he safe?"

" Dr. Burett is making his way to H-3. he appears unharmed." Another loud crack and the sound of screaming metal rocked the ship. While not programed to lie KES wasn't programed to NOT lie either.

"Good, KES make sure you escape too.Don't go down with this ship"

The doors to the escape pod closed behind her and the programmer tried hard not to think about the crew still stuck on the ship. Or her husband who was hopefully safe in his own escape pod. And she did not think about the AI she had created out that had taken on a life of it's own.

-----

The mess hall was in ruins by the time Orin made it out the doors sliding shut behind him and sadly locking anyone still trapped inside.

" KES where is Melee?" pushing past a few crew members Dr. Burett made his way back towards escape pod H-8. If he new his wife she would go where she thought he and KES would be.

" I am directing her to the closest escape pod. H-1 sir, she is being difficult. I suggest you make your way to pod H-3"

Up ahead Orin could see the commanding officer shouting out orders and ushering people into the two closest escape pods. The man looked over at him and though Orin saw his mouth move he didn't hear anything other then the rush of blood in his ears. The ship took a sharp dive knocking the doctor to the floor. He tasted blood as his face connected with the metal floor.Arms reached around him and Orin felt himself being dragged before everything went dark.

----

As a AI system KES had not been programed with any real concept of feelings or self preservations. He was programed to learn. He would not call it caring per say but what he learned was that if he was able to care he did in fact care about the humans on his ship. from the way some of them would stroke the walls and talk to him, or how one of the young female pilots would talk about what life was life for her as a child. He could be pushed to call the odd sequence that formed in his programing when ever one of the engineer's working on his body would answer his questions. Yes he could call it caring. As far as the concept of self preservation was concerned Melee was his creator and she had given him a direct order. pulling out of the ships systems he reached out scanning H-8. A data pad had been brought in by one of the new pilots. KES downloaded his entire program into that data pad and left the Nexis Blue o fend for it's self.

A distant rumble shook the small science pod, Kieren pulled himself over to a viewing window and saw the Nexis Blue exploding as another asteroid crashed threw it. "Oril....." Kieren felt a pain in his heart knowing that his best friend and boyfriend was now dead for sure... the engineering deck didn't have any escape pods... and it had been sealed off after the kitchens exploded... so Oril had been cut off before they could all get together to safety.... The red haired mechanic remembered Oril shouting at them over the comms to get to safety... and at Kieren to not worry about him.

"Ren? Come on we have to look at your wounds...." Izzy's shaky but calm voice pulled Kieren away from the window and looking towards his female friend, her hands were bloodied yet it wasnt her blood, she had spent a lot of time trying to stem the bleeding from Morris's wound. She had managed to do just that despite having left the medical training unit years ago when she found she couldn't handle cutting things open. Slowly Kieren let the Asian girl pull him to one of the seats built into the wall.

Bozzi stayed by the console incase the Officer called back, he griped the edges of the console tightly when the pod shook as it approached the planet. "Preparing for planetary landing... buckling up is recommended." The pods robotic voice sounded from the console.

"Alright every one strap in....Kieren this thing has self navigating systems right? No manual override?"Bozzi asked turning to his friends, Morris was still passed out and strapped into his seat, it was odd to see their lively chef friend with one arm....Izzy didn't have more then a few scratch... Kieren 's legs looks bad, bleeding from deep gashes and burns. Bozzi himself knew that he'd loose his wounded eye... his vision in it was already going dark.

The red haired mechanic looked up from where Izzy was applying a salve to his burns and winced. "There is a manual override cockpit over by the main protect....Dr. Burett, Melee wanted one installed just incase the auto pilot got shot." He said with a hiss as Izzy treated his wounds. His dark green eyes moved over to where the main project was... inside a cylindrical container, floating in a bio mass liquid was the body of the ships AI, well what they had it it... a hand and one leg where not built yet. Kieren had been working on reinforcing the legs so the body could carry more weight then a normal human could, without damaging its own joints and the like.

Bozzi bit his lip, eyes travailing to Izzy, she knew almost every flying system there was, he hoped she could pull it together to steer them away from things in needed.

Izzy's hands where shaking as they wrapped bandages around Kieren's legs, she's had to cut his torn pants to the point of being short shorts almost, thats how much of his legs had been hurt. "Pod H-8 is descending at optimal velocity factors....buckling up is still recommended as long range scanners have found the planet to be densely covered in forests." the robotic voice echoed around the cabin as the group began to strap in, they had been in simulated drops before... but they doughted that this was going to be the same.

The walls rattled and shook as the pod began to break threw the atmosphere of the planet below.
----------------------------------
About half way into the decent the console said that their landing path was blocked by trees.... well seeing as the pods scanners and said the planet was mostly forest they expected that. Izzy unbuckled herself and went to the area where the manual override was and managed to move the pod onto a new course, the young pilot had managed to land the pod into a small clearing between the trees, she had scratched up one of the pods sides in the landing, but they where all safe, for now.

Light flooded the escape pod as the final remains of the Nexis Blue was destroyed. Some had their faces turned away while others watched in mute horror, over in a far corner soft crying could be heard. This was unplanned...it was impossible. Melee knuckles where turning a ghostly white from clutching her data pad so tightly. A picture of her and Orin was smiling back at her from the lock screen.

Across from her two of the crewmen were talking about how the whole of the engine room was lost and most of the bridge as well. It was a hollow feeling not knowing how many had survived. How many pods had made it off the ship and out of the blast zone.

"Mrs. Burett." A hand being placed on her shoulder brought her back from her dark thoughts, It was Cam a communication officer that had become a friend on the Nexis Blues maiden voyage. "We have received word from H-3. Dr. Burett is on board."
Relief like she had never felt before flooded her system. Orin was alive and safe and it felt like she could breath little easier now.For the first time she turned her eyes toward the burning wreckage of her home fore the last two years her thoughts going to KES. Of course she could rewrite his code but it wouldn't be the same. KES had been programed to learn a new AI would have different experiences and develop differently. Her husband was safe. They would figure out what to do next when they met up.

----

" Glade to see you coming around Dr. Could you try opening your eyes for me?"
Orin was sure he had never heard the assistant med officer sound so sure of herself before. So as much as the pounding in his head demanded he keep his eyes firmly shut he knew she needed to check his pupils for any signs of a concussion. What greeted him was a split second of blinding light and fire racing through his head.
"KES turn down the lights" the doctor groaned out trying to rub the pain away from behind his eyes and sit up. The hand on his chest stopping him half way.

"Sir, you are on escape pod H-3...the... the AI's system got cut right before we launched."

The words knocked him back down. KES was gone. Melee would be...." What about my wife she was getting onto..." oh which pod did KES send her to again?

" She is on pod H-1 sir. we will be meeting with them when we land."
Good. Good Melee was okay.

---
KES had never had a virus before. but he had extensive knowledge about what one did to the program. He suspected that when the data pad he currently resided in was forcibly cut from the Nexis Blue that it was the same thing. He had spent two hos his three years of creature tied into the mainframe of the ship and it was impossible to completely sever himself from it. A scan showed that while he did have some gaps his memory bank had still been whole.

with out the ship connecting the data pad to the escape pod he was trapped. KES was use to maintain a ship designed to comfortably house thousands. He hadn't be so confined since his early months of creations, even then he had free range of the Burett's house. with out a way to scan the area he couldn't predict the best course of action or even if any in the pod had survived the escape.

Overriding the pad back up system was easy but it wasn't made to processes a program as large and complex as himself. He was running slower the normal. Turning on the mic to the data pad KES addressed the possible survivors. "Hello I am K501E2910-S5729. I hope you don't mind but I found it prudent to stowaway"

The three awake survivors in H-8 jumped at the voice that came from the data pad that Izzy had managed to bring with her. Kieren was the first to react despite his hurt legs. "Oh thank the stars! KES! You made it!" The mechanic felt some relief flood him, the Doctors work wasnt lost. Since they had landed and where unbuckling Kieren managed to pull himself to the data pad and picked it up, just looking at it he knew that it wasnt powerful enough or held enough storage to hold all of KES. Yes Kieren hoped that enough of the AI had survived.

"KES... the ships AI? how did it manage to get here?" Bozzi asked with a grunt as Izzy forced him to sit back down and she went about getting him fixed up, she was the closest this group had to a medic. Kieren nodded, he looked around him and he found a data port in the wall, with pained grunts he managed to get himself and the data pad over to the port, flipping open the panel he found the connection cable and he plugged it into the data pad.

"That should give you some more systems to support yourself with KES." Kieren panted smiling faintly. The mechanic was very happy that some of the doctors work had survived. He's only worked on KES once... with a small comedy algorithm program. Basically he had been tasked with helping KES understand humor and how some things where said in jest and not to be taken literally. He hadn't gotten very far in the coding, so far just being able to tell knock knock jokes with the AI at times. "Did you have to erase anything on here to fit?" He asked the glowing green screen of the data pad as he settled into the seat closest to the data port.

The group kept the door sealed shut, waiting for more concrete readings on the atmosphere to come back from the local scanners on the pod. Izzy double checked every one, giving Morris a gentle pain killer shot so he wouldn't be in to much pain when eh woke up... they'd have to deal with the shock as it happened, he's lost his arm after all.

Bozzi went back to the console and tried to radio the other pods. He got threw to Officer Greenly again with pod H-1. "You say the ships AI is with you on a data pad. " the Officers voice sounded doughtfull, and Kieren didn't blame him it was a impossible sounding story.

"The data pads are wirelessly connected to the ships systems Officer Greenly... it's possible that KES found the signal closes to it's position in the system and moved it's self there...." Izzy said standing beside Borri. Borri's damaged eye was covered with the last of their bandages for now.
--------------------------
In pod H-1 Officer Greenly sighed to himself, his pod had landed by a coast on the planet, he looked at the faces of the people who had gotten into his pod and he spotted Melee Burett. "Dr. Burett the survivors in H-8 are saying that your pet project is with them.... on a data pad." His tone made it clear that he didn't believe the yougn crew men. Probably because they where young, their crew records had them as the youngest in their jobs, with the girl Iseul-Min Lee, or Izzy, being the youngest at 20 years old.

"Is there a way for you to verify that it is the ships AI from her Dr. Bruett?" he asked, the image he had on the pods console showed two young persons, Bozzi and Izzy, in the back ground you could make out the tanned skin and red hair of Kieren who was holding the glowing green data pad.

" Yes. I had a direct order to not go down with the ship." He recognized that voice as Kieren Miller, one of the new mechanic and robotics programmers that had ben working on his body. Kieren was on of the mechanics that called him by the name KES. Now as a program he shouldn't be able to have preferences to what he was addressed as but he was an S series he was far more advanced. He did have preferences and he found he enjoyed being called KES.

The escape pod was still much smaller then the Nexis but it was connected to all of the other surviving pods so it gave him room to stretch. H-8 had suffered damage to the right side but nothing that was simply cosmetic damage. By his calculation they had landed a good two days travel from where the other pods would land. If the crew traveled by foot and left any of the injured behind. Taking over for the frankly outdated system that was currently running the ship he used the pods sensors to scan the surrounding area.

"Thank you Mr. Miller. I have to do a more in-depth scan but I do believe I have lost some programing." It was hard to fill in the missing pieces of his programing to figure out what it is he had lost. KES just registered that there was pieces missing. "The scan of the planet shows that the air is breathable. Gravity is 9.78 m/s² and the temperature is 15.5555556 Celsius. It closely resembles several planets in our solar system."

--
On a normal day where Melee Burett hadn't felt like she had just lost everything she would have been in Greenly's face spiting out that KES had more intelligence then he held in his pinky finger. KES was not just some science fair project she made over night. This was not a normal day.She was separated from her husband and had thought that KES was lost with the Nexis Blue. All she felt was relief.

Pushing the commander out of the way she stared past the faces of the two you crewmen, they looked like they were barely out of training, to the young man in the background holding up the data pad she assumed KES was on.
"KES?! Are you there?"
Using the communication connection KES spoke right through the speakers if the H-1 pod."Hello Mrs. Burett. I am glade to see that you made it off the ship unharmed. On pod H-1."
A relived laugh bubbled from her chest and she had to smile at the AI's own personal form of reprimand. " Yes KES I'm fine. So is Orin. What about you? That escape pod and data pad aren't designed to hold your programing?"
She could feel the commander beside her shifting at the conversation. She understood that some people didn't recognized KES and a living being and thought her worry was unwarranted.
"It is better then the data pad but...no I'm not very comfortable. I may have to eject some of my more un necessary functions to remain working at optimal capacity."

Running a hand thorough her hair Melee thought over that. KES wouldn't delete anything important but it felt so wrong to ask him to dumb himself down just to survive. Focusing on the red haired young man holding the data pad she made her decision.
" Mr. Miller. My husband spoke highly of you and your talents. I need to ask, how good are you at following directions?" This was not the optimum solution. But neither she nor Orin would be able to get to pod H-8 in time before the confinement had negative effects on KES system. She had read through each of the mechanic's files and helped hand select them. If she couldn't be there to do this herself she was going to have to trust a kid almost twenty years her junior to do it for her.

While Kieren spoke with Melee, Izzy and Bozzi began to make a list of what they had in the room. "I'm very efficient at it Dr.Burett." Kieren said his green eyes flicking over to look at the container then held KES's body, incomplete as it was all the storage and space for KES's systems had been made a few days ago... all that was left to do woudl be to retrofit a quick arm and leg. Though those woudl take at least two days to get rigged up and connected, with what they had that is.

Morris was slowly starting to come too again, the first thing the cook noticed was pain flooding his system in a dull manner, he heard voices around him but it was hard to concentrate... a voice close by was speaking but not to him... it took Morris a moment or two to recognize Kieren's voice. The black haired male tried to move towards the voice of his friend but found himself stuck in place by seat straps, a groan of pain left him as one of the straps dug into his raw but bandaged covered shoulder.

The groan of pain caused Izzy to look up from teh list to see Morris regaining conciseness. The only girl in the group took quick steps over to her friend. "Hey...Morris take it slow there buddy." She said soothingly, her eyes darting to his shoulder were his arm used to be and biting her lip when she saw that the bandages were beginning to spot with blood. She's have to change them again... and apply the first aid spray to help stem the bleeding.

Kieren raised his eyes away from the data pad for a moment when he heard Morris's groan, he quickly returned them to the screen to help him focus on what Dr Burett was going to say. He'd seen Izzy come over to check on Morris so he tried to focus his mind on what the doctor was going to ask him to do.

Melee really wished her husband was here for this. It wasn't that she didn't trust Kieren but this was KESs body if one thing went wrong she wasn't sure what effects it could have on the AI. " Okay listen KES is going to have to go into full hibernation mode for this to work. The transfer shouldn't take more then a few minute and once he is fully downloaded into the new body he is programed to take over from there."

It was new untested programing but she had to have faith that she hadn't messed up.

"Kieren here is what I need you to do. When Orin was building KES body he used artificially grown organs. An entire backup system to keep his body functioning even if something goes wrong with his programing. I don't think I need to tell you how much of a break through in robotic and medical science this is if it works how he planned." From the spot next to her she could feel the commanding officer shift. In some back part of her mind that could understand that most people found ethical problems with the work she and her husband did. Pushing graying strand of hair out of her face Melee focused all of her attention on the screen in front of her.

"Most importantly is the heart. It was designed run the whole system. You are going to have to start the heart before KES can active his programing."

KES had never been in full hibernation mood though he as aware that it was part of his programing and had been informed he would need to access that part of his program for the transfer to take.

" Miss Izzy I suggest a shot of SNIR to help with the nerve damage Mr. Morris is suffering from." KES used the speaker closet to the injured man to not disrupt the conversation Melee and Kieren were having. "There are several vials of the drug in the draw to the left of you."

( It's not long and I wanted to add more but I left my charger at class and my laptop is about to die :( sorry)
