Grandma sort of evolved her family dinners around dishes she thought people liked. If she knew I was coming over, there'd be deviled eggs. My little brother really liked that jello salad when he was little (it's sweet, duh) so even after he turned 20, she was making it for him. My cousin Keven meant a bowl of not-on-the-cob corn, because he'd had braces when he first came to stay with us, but liked corn. That sort of thing. By the time she died, our family dinners were stylized and fixed meals that represented our past as a family. Which is a nice way to think about it when you don't have to eat it, lol.

my college teachers had logic right though... they said "Why should I spend all day grading your work? I don't want to so it'll be 2 eweeks before you get your papers back"

aw, monstahh' that's sweet. (about the books, not the homework) Although I think it would take me years to be able to open such a thing without crying.
I've never understood homework over vacation. Are they LOOKING for a way to fail kids?

But the fact that she wrote it out for me with her shaky grandma cursive is special to me, even if I'll never make that jello salad. XD

It is special. I would love to have something like that.
Maybe someday you will have a craving for that jello salad & be happy that you have her recipe.
I think the holiday recipe I miss the most from my Grandma was for her stuffing. As Grandma got older & her arthritis got worse her stuffing sort of became a new adventure. My brother & I always loved it, but the last few times she made it you would hit pockets of herbs. Hitting a big bunch of sage & pepper would almost make you cry. We never told her & we happily ate every bite. I sure do miss her. That is another of our lost recipes. My Mom & Dad have been trying to figure it out for the last 12 years. Maybe someday they will master it.

Well...the reason I feel bad and try to avoid them, is because I didn't particularly like the woman. She was in her 70s when I was born. She was like 92 when she died a few years ago. And she had dementia. After I was about 11 she couldn't remember who I was...and before that I mainly saw her as a bitter old lady who would yell at me when I played with my 'Toto.'
I'm actually a little upset about Toto. My grandfather kept him, but the second to last time I visited, he asked me to take him, but I was afraid that if I did, he would die too (irrational, I know) but when I came back to visit again, he'd gotten rid of him. And I wish someone had told me that was what was going to happen. :(
I miss Toto so much. And uhg I feel so bad about my nana, and not talking to my grandpa enough. u__u

Yeah, it was like that for us, too. Her egg salad was amazing, but near the end it got a little crunchy.... >.>'
She tried so hard though, we couldn't really say anything. To her, food was her best expression of love.
