Yes to the Nth. Friend collecting is something that annoys me muchly.
One of the few reasons why I avoid social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook.
If I've never even seen them around I'm not accepting the friend request.

Anyway, back to the original topic: I did receive a message from this person and was not sure if it was a violation of any set rule. At first the message seemed personal, as if I had posted in a thread they were in or something. When re-read it and thought it over I kind of figured it was something automated because I couldn't remember seeing that person anywhere around. The name was easy enough that it would have rang a bell...

If someone were conversationally mentioning another website, that would be one thing. You're allowed to talk about other sites here but I think that the main issue with this incident is that the messages sent were unsolicited and that there were a lot of them. It was spam.

I'm glad you're attentive, that kind of thing is no fun at all. Glad I didn't get that message and probably won't get one in the future.

Also I notice in the forums from time to time blatant plug threads pop up from brand new members, acting as if they've been here for years. Not quite as annoying as a mass PM or email, but definitely in the same family.

Good to know, this happened to me on another site too... it is quite annoying!
