So a few people told me they don't know how to make origami stars, or that they had tried before and failed. Well let me tell you, they are the easiest thing to make! So I've made a little photo tutorial so you can learn to make these little stars yourself. I made a lot of photos, but that's because I wanted to be as detailed as possible for people who might be confused. Sometimes I have multiple pictures for just one step, so don't look at the amount of pictures and feel overwhelmed! These take something like 30 seconds to make - it's nothing. So here we go!

Once you get the hang of it, these are great to make while listening to podcasts, music, or TV shows that don't require you to look very much (like the news). I made a good half of these while listening to Welcome to Night Vale!

If you have any questions or are confused by any of my steps, don't hesitate to ask me! Although I will say that origami instructions tend to look very confusing when you read them, but go much better if you work along with them. So if any step seems confusing, just try to follow the tut first, it might all make sense then!

OMG YOU CAN JUST TRIM THE PAPER. Why didn't that occur to me all those times I cursed the long end into a crumply mass of hate? "It doesn't fit so I must be doing something wrong, I'll try shoving it into that little slot even harder."

Oh god, I think I'd have about 12 stars if I relied on the end being the right length on its own. @_@ I consider it a twist of good luck when I don't need to trim it!

Cherry, I just tried your tut and I was successful! I'm trying to figure out why this tutorial worked for me and the others didn't, and I think part of it is that you don't begin with an exact measurement - previously I think I spent too much time trying to get the paper strips exact, and making sure that each fold was exact, and it was stressful and didn't produce a good result. Your tutorial is nice because it feels forgiving, which is something origami is usually not, in my experience.

Just chopped off the bottom of a piece of junk mail without measuring a damn thing and it worked fine, woo! Behold your godchild, pizza flyer starlet:

Woohoo! I'm so glad it helped you! Origami stars are definitely pretty forgiving. The strips can't be too wide, but how long they are doesn't matter so much since it doesn't make a difference in the end if you have to wrap it around an extra time or two. And I have absolutely no patience for precision cutting, so unless I'm buying special paper just for origami, the project had best be okay with me eyeballing the proportions!

I want to try! I'll try right now. Are the strips of paper the width of an A4 paper?

The paper I used was that width. :D

I tried with the width but it was too short.. It seemed that there wasn't enough paper to squidge at the end. Although that may have more to do with how wide I made the strips.
I used thinner longer pieces and I've made 3 good ones!

Sorry, I really should have stated the measurements of the paper I was cutting from, huh? It was the standard 8x11ish (there might be a .5 in there somewhere) paper.
If your ends aren't quite long enough to make it to the next fold, just trim them so they'll go into the previous one.

Haha, I think we all use different measurements. It's just like time zones - confusing! I really like the stars, thanks for sharing your crafty idea, I am glad I now know how to make them! I have only tried with coloured sugar paper so far, so I don't know how different it would be using normal paper or other kinds of paper.
Now, what should I do with them.. Decorate something!

I've seen some people make garland from them, and I'd like to give that a try eventually. I'm not 100% on how it's done yet, but I think you just thread some string between the "arms" of the stars. A long needle would probably help. Then you'd probably want to knot the thread on either side of the star so it'd stay in place. Of course I put my stars in a jar, but they'd be neat in any vessel - bowls, glass dishes, clear vases, or maybe even scattered on a bookshelf.

I haven't heard of sugar paper before, that sounds interesting. If you take any pics of the stars you've made so far, I'd love to see them!

I strung up a couple of mine, they make a cute dangly thing. I might make some into earrings, since I don't have to worry about rain here. :D
