Before the first wave of zombies were reported the country was broken in to states and for the first couple of years those boundaries stuck. Slowly as people moved, settled, fought just to survive states edges blurred until it was just land. Flat open land, cities- town, and forest. Buried deep in the wilderness of what once was known as the state of Kentucky was a community built into the tress. It was built three years after the first attacks. A group of twenty survives settling into the tress to avoid the grounded creatures.

Thirty years later an array of buildings had taken the place of the single wooden lodging built around an giant Oak tree. There was barrecks for the males and females with out children to care for, smaller one room buildings that housed the small number of families, rooms that were used to educate the new generation on trades that would help keep the community flourishing. They had built the closet thing to a kitchen they could manage with a mess hall attached for the community meals.

They had branched down to plant small gardens in the batches of sunlight that slipped through the tress. And with a system in place that had people making bi weekly trips to near by cities and towns they kept well stocked on the supplies they couldn't grow or make themselves.

The governing system was a pyramid. Everyone had their roles. Runners, scavengers, caregivers, nutritionist, gunners, what ever the community needed. For each group a representative was elected to meet at the round table to discuss any concerns and needs. At the top of the Pyramid for the last twenty odd years was North Coulson. Now with a lessening of zombie sightings and the slow drag of time aging the founding members Ironwood was going to into the final stage of survival. Reestablishing humanity.

A task that North was not fully equipped to help with which brought in the need for a co leader. Someone who had already been half running the community anyway and one of it's founding members.

It was with all of this in mind that kept the short Asian woman out of bed and instead leaning against the wooden guard rail staring out at what she could make out of her tree fort home from the star light.

Back in the room they shared for the sake of space, Maya Pentecost, head Caregiver and representative for those who oversaw the children and education, sat in her cot, watching North.

"You're overthinking this," Maya said in her quiet, gentle way. "Someone capable enough to oversee the transition is here in Ironwood." She pulled on a strand of her brown curly hair, then pushed it out of her well-lined face. "If you're so bothered, why not just make it a purely Round Table decision?"

Turning away from site of the community she had help built from the ground up- literally- North rested her back against the rail. "Because we need someone to have final say. It's what has worked all this time." Crossing her arms dark eyes started into the dark room adjusting to night quickly after years of practice.

There was so much that had to be done and she wasn't sure if there was another person she could trust to watch over the community with her. They hadn't lost anyone in the community for years. Sure runner's would go missing and sometimes scavengers wouldn't make it back but those were the risk. Risk that people knew. But lost anyone to a Murder, not for years. Her system worked but now it was " outdated"

Raising and hand to brush a stray hair that had slipped out of her pony tail. "And I'm not over thinking anything."

Maya smiled at her friend's denial, though to be honest it was years of living with North that told her what she was doing rather than true sight; she would need to see if Lynnhaven could bring back reading glasses when he Scavenged next.

She rested her back against the solid trunk that made up the center of the treehouse. "Some of what's worked in the past won't be of any use here," she replied. "It's been weeks since the runners had to let off a serious explosion. Nothing has attacked Ironwood directly in months." She smiled. "It seems like it's time for the transition we talked about so long ago is finally here."

Maya then winced and shifted in her bed to assuage her creaking back. "What about Tex?"

The noise that came from the back of her throat was anything but agreeable. It wasn't that she didn't trust Tex. He was a more then capable gunner, he had a logical head and she trusted that he was loyal to Ironwood and would do what needed to be done for keep it running smoothly.
She also trusted him to be a pain in her ass.

" It needs to be someone a little more diplomatic and a little less idiot." North grumbled, though years of running from explosions had pretty much shot her hearing. So a grumble from her was casual speaking tones for others.
"Plus he wouldn't work. It needs to be someone who stay in camp most of the time."

Maya allowed herself a snort of amusement. She knew better than to suggest Tex in seriousness; he was too much of an old battle-axe to successfully lead a transition from treetop survival to ground-level living. Stubborn, paranoid, and scarred in more ways than one; that was their oldest friend and best gunner.

Much like someone else she knew.

"If you're fishing for a volunteer, I would be more than happy to assist," Maya said. "The caregivers function just fine without me hovering, and the only time I sit in on a classroom these days is when one of the children is having a discipline problem."

A rare soft smile cuts across her face for the briefest of second before North schools her features back into a mask. It was a good idea. Maya had a way with people, they listened to her because they felt like she honestly cared.

North had no delusions about why people followed her. She had the loudest voice, the best ' I will flay you alive' glare, and she knew how to stay alive when the world was going to shit. They had needed her, now they needed Maya.

" I wasn't fishing." Pushing off the railing she cast one last look around their tree top home. Everyone was safe and that was all she needed. Their room was only slightly darker then the moonless night outside. "However you are the most qualified for the job. "

Letting her body finally relax she lowered herself down to the cot- a tightening in her lower back warned of pain come the morning. She hated how her own body was betraying her after all these years. " No one else is brave enough to tell me off like you are."

Maya settled back down into her cot, listening as North finally got back into hers.

"Of course not," she smiled, then smiled broader at North's muffled groan. "I'll make you some tea for the aches in the morning. And of course no one else is brave enough to tell you off. Anyone else would have gotten stabbed in the face a long time ago."

She didn't acknowledge North's assessment of her qualifications to lead. It wasn't so much a compliment as a statement of fact, anyway.

"It's late. We should sleep."

A mumbled grunt was all North gave before rolling over to fake sleep till real sleep finally came. Maya's teas had become almost necessary over the last ten years as the life style they all led finally caught up with them.

As for the face stabbing she had no comment. Tex could spread what ever rumors he wanted.

Technically the tree she was sitting in was two tress over from what is the camps line. But it had the best view and was crazy difficult to get to so an added bonus. For Jenny it was more about the dew covered bark slipping underneath her fingers, the distance just a little wider then what she normally jumped. And she had to be quick because she had only a few only a few hours in between sunrise and when she had to report to the wall.

Tex sat in the lawn chair he had prepped for his personal use on the wall, sharpening his axe and taking stock of his surroundings. He usually didn't get more than five hours of sleep tops, so he figured he might as well drop in on the night watch and make sure they were still doing their jobs. To his eternal pride, they were. He trained 'em up good.

It was a clear morning, the sun just starting to peek over the soft rolling hills and glistening off the dew. Tex took a deep breath through the nose. Cookfires from last night still lingered, a faint whiff of breakfast getting started, fresh air, clean trees--nothing did a body more good than that, he thought as he tested the edge of his axe.

A tiny Runner slipping down a tree didn't escape his notice (though Lynnhaven and North both would swear up and down that he didn't pay a lick of attention to much of anything). He knew that wild white-blond hair anywhere, but just to mess with her, waited until he was just out of her line of sight before yelling.

"HEY SQUIRT. WHERE YOU GOIN'?"

The fight or flight response was slightly alter in the blond. Instead it was fight or run somewhere with explosives and watch fire decimate your enemies. It was a natural response for runners to be jumpy. Whipping her head around Jenny looked for the person that the voice belonged to. Zombies couldn't talk but it didn't stop her from preparing to launch herself back into the trees.

As the voice, then words, registered she relaxed still she pulled herself back up into the tree branches. Balancing on tree branches was a past time she had taken up around ten. It had gotten her in trouble as a child. As a runner it had helped her out run murders.

Dropping down from one of the over hanging branches with a slightly guilty smile, " skipping breakfast."

Tex tipped back his fishing hat (today's hat of choice; he had at least eleven different types of hats he swapped out daily) and grinned at Jenny as she padded into view.

"No bueno, chickadee," he said comfortably, leaning back in his chair and swapping the axe for one of the many, many knives he kept on his person at all times. "Can't have a runner on an empty tank. Go swipe yourself something from the kitchen before you head out on what I'm sure is a one-hundred-percent certified and approved mission."

He winked just to prove his point.

Her smile was a little twitchy but honest and had a slight hint of a pout. "I hate waiting in line." Which was true. Most of the runners she knew just grabbed something they could eat on the run...so to speak. She preferred to let the hunger push her to go faster.

There was an itch under her skin that was craving to get out there and get her blood pumping. The sun was still a little too low for them to have the runners go yet. She figure she had another thirty minutes before she had to line up.

Though that wink gave her hope for something a little exciting happening. Was there a murder close by? Or had Wyatt whipped up another untested bomb for her?

Tex threw his head back and laughed. "Can't blame you for that one, kiddo. Lines are the pits." He sheathed one of his knives and took out another. "Well, little lady, if you wanna mosey on over to the labs, I think our mad scientist could use a cup of coffee and some human interaction. You never know what he might have cooking in that nutty brain of his."

This was partially a lie. Tex didn't know exactly what was cooking in that nutty brain of Wyatt's, but judging by the manic laughter echoing halfway across camp at three AM, it was something Jenny would like. Besides, he didn't smell danger and the scar on his ass didn't ache, so it was unlikely any zombie activity would disturb the morning's peace.

Despite the late night North was still awake before sunrise. The aches and pains aside. Sleep had been hard to come by in the early years and waking before sunrise had become a habit she refused to kick. As was doing a full perimeter check before grabbing food. The M&P®45 Threaded barrel handgun had it's place of honor strapped to her thigh while a old but well cared for machete strapped to her back. She still dressed as if the world was ending.

Sparing a glance over towards Maya's cot before she headed out to make sure the rifle she had given the other woman was still propped against the truck of the tree. Making her way towards the catwalk leading from the community to the check point at the wall.

Her morning schedule consisted of dismissing the night shift patrol, assigning the morning shift their routes and letting them know if there were any sightings. From there she'd grab a quick breakfast and meet with the other heads of the round table. For about an hour or so they'd discuss supplies that they needed, concerns from the general populace, and any other business that became prevalent.

The catwalk still made a noise on the third to last branch like it was going to break. A nice little warning for those on guard duty that some one was approaching.
-----
Gray green eyes lite up the ever present smile stretching wider across her face. "Really?" Already her attention was pulled a crossed the commune. " I should go see what he's got for me." Waving at the head Gunner the blonde took off at a run along the walkway of the wall till she found a low hanging branch to pull her self up on.

Making her way along the higher branches with her arms stretched Jenny did honestly debate grabbing breakfast for Wyatt. For the two seconds her attention span allowed that is. A stop at the mess hall would delay any nifty explosives their genius had been able to cook up.

Tex grinned as Jenny scampered off, working on yet another knife with his whetstone. He heard the creak of the tree branch and knew who was approaching.

"Top a the morning to you, O Fearless Leader," he said, only grinning wider when North slapped the hat off his head. "How was your beauty sleep?"

--

Ezra pushed up from his last push-up and toweled off the light sweat that built up on his dark-skinned, muscular arms from his warmup routine. The humidity made it worse than it really was, but it was a relief to pull on a t-shirt instead of a sweater, finally. He had morning duty and North wouldn't like it if he was late. He had an example to set, after all.

Besides, he didn't want to miss Tex and North sniping sarcasm at each other. She didn't really show it but he knew few things made North happier than getting to match wits with one of her oldest friends. He laced up his boots and strapped on his knife sheaths. The sledgehammer he used as his primary weapon went into a loop on his belt. Once it was secure, he headed out of the barracks.

" I dreamed you had been eaten by a mountain lion." Arms crossed North looks about as ready to deal with Tex as she ever did. " I was disappointed to find you sitting here." IN truth she had come looking for him. She wanted to run the idea of Maya co-leading this breeding stage by in and Lynnhaven before the round table meeting.

Across camp in one of the lower building Wyatt was busying trying to fuse together the casing on his latest explosive. All last night he had been tinkering with the idea of a generator that they could run all the way out here. He had torn through book after book and though he had a rough concept in his mind bring it to life was proving a little difficult.

So he shelved that project for latter and went back to working on a new explosive. It would set off three tiny explosions, enough to take out a small handful of zombies while luring more in before the big light show.
It was dangerous and hadn't been tested.

Of course he knew the right person to play guinea pig. Jenny had to have four different screws loose in her head but she survived every new 'toy' he made for her and kept coming back for more.

As if thoughts of her summoned the blond she dropped into the door way.
"Can't you walk around like a normal person instead of a blasted squirrel? " He got a twitchy smile in return before she started messing with his things.

To Jenny Wyatt was still that ten year old boy who led their little group around because he was smarter then some of the adults and could get them extra snacks from the kitchen. Which meant that his shrieks for her not to mess up his papers were ignored.

Tex laughed, retrieving his hat and returning to his knives. "I'm too chewy and tough," he said. "You'll have to do better than that." He tested the edge of his current knife with his thumb. "Like I believe I mentioned before, what's up? If you're looking for your kid or Lynnhaven you're a little early."

Like magic Tex saw Ezra approaching out of the corner of his eye. He lazed back in his chair and tipped his hat down over his eyes.
