Ooh, don't look at wikipedia for that one. Nice confusing sentence there,
Quote:
In the tax law of the United States the claim of right doctrine causes a taxpayer to recognize income if they receive the income even though they do not have a fixed right to the income.
I think we can safely say you didn't receive this 'income' ;D

This is going to be my first year I will owe something (this as in 2013) It was actually more expensive to file my taxes than what I was getting in returns. oh well.

That's a drag. :( We just moved from a high state income tax state to one with lower state income taxes, but a sales tax.. Not sure if it works out even, but it will be much nicer not to have to shell out a big chunk of cash at the end of the year.

I have my ID, so I can always look up what my taxes were the year before. If you're employed, or a student, the information should be available at the school on some kind of main website that you use (e.g. Blackboard or the main registry where you view your schedule, make payments, etc.) for future reference. FAFSA paperwork and status should be there as well, unless you're from a tiny university, and they may still be using paper records.

And for future reference, there's no deadline for filing taxes if you're getting a return. If you OWE taxes, you not only have a deadline, but may incur fees if you miss it.

@BellyButton: Thanks again for all your wonderific help. ^^

Unfortunately, the service I was trying to use wanted to charge me $17 and some cents
for things that didn't even sound tax-related!
So then Mom made me use TurboTax.

@Longcat: Hello lazy nontaxfilingperson. How are you today? :3

@Jupiter: I hate my college's website.
And, oh really?!?! HOORAY, then!!
Thanks for the info!

I'm one of those strange wierd people that get their taxes done as soon as they get their info. It bothers me to leave them sitting. I normally have mine done by feb.
