Name: Emery Pearsen
Ages: 7, summary gap, 12/3, 18, summary gap, 26
Appearance: Child, Adult
5’10” long and thin, long limbs and a slight angular but pretty face. He’s got dark hair naturally but his look matches his free spirit nature. His hair changes colors on a regular basis, though not always into wild primary colors; he’s had pretty much every hair color that is an option, though he’s also had to go back to his natural color several times to keep his hair healthy. He’s got several tattoos, most notably a series of stars around his left eye (like Kat Von D). He's also got a tattoo on his left wrist that says 'do I dare?' from the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, which he shares with Samir. His other tattoos are a koi on his left calf and a stack of books on his right calf. Then he's got a rainbow feather that starts low on his right arm and leads to black birds flying away, capped off with a large gold finch in flight on his right shoulder. His clothing is a much of a mishmash, favoring brighter colors and perhaps the odd color combo here or there, but it fits him. Even as a kid he dressed this way, except then the colors and patterns were even bolder.
Job: kid, student, published author and english tutor
Personality/Bio: As a kid, he was bright-eyed and energetic, loved hearing bed time stories about daring people defying the odds to be with their soulmates. So when Emery first finds Samir at such a young age, he’s thrilled. It’s all those bedtime stories coming true! As they grow up Emery is always dragging Samir into trouble, getting them into places they shouldn’t be and getting them covered in mud and driving both their parents to frustration. The two are always together, so much so that if one pair of parents is missing a kid, they just call the others; certain the two will be together. Emery doesn’t start feeling trapped by the idea of having always known his mate until much later, when he realizes you don’t get to have that odd-defying romance when you mate has always been by your side. When you’re part of a pair from the beginning. By age 18, the attachment to Samir (and Samir’s dependency on him) is starting to chafe. Everyone expects it all to be so perfect all the time. After all, they’re set for life, right? And maybe they are, but why does that feel trite. He’s the one to propose the split. He loves Samir, but he needs to know they can be separate people. That they can both exist as two wholes, not each as one half one.
Emery’s a free-spirit that love of daring stories never leaving him, even as an adult. So much so that he started writing his own stories, even managing to get published. Though he can’t support himself from his books yet, so he tutors as well. He loves Samir, above everything, even when feeling trapped by expectation. So even with the proposal of them splitting off with no contact to become their own people. He still wants to see Samir again and probably be together. He just knows they need this. He spends his years without Samir, traveling when he can and exploring the world and imparting that same joy and love for true love overcoming all in the kids he teaches. All throughout it, thinking about the mate he left, but never more confident in his choice for them to do this.

Name: Samir Aeolius
Age: 7, summary gap, 14, 18, summary gap, 26
Ethnicity: half white, half Indian, with distant Greek ties
Occupation: kid, student, librarian assistant looking to get into research.
Appearance: child, adult
5’8” tall, he’s got a compact build with wires arms and legs, more so in his teen years. Skin is a medium-dark tan color, though it was a solid brown in his youth, especially over summer vacations. His natural hair color is black. He dyed it silver in college and has kept that look. When the silver fades, his hair takes on a blue-purple tint. His clothing is button ups and black slacks or jeans. As a child, he also dressed rather smart, though with more color and energy. He could be seen wearing t-shirts up until high school. His clothing turned fully casual-nerdy at that point. His eyes are a clear blue and he wears black rimmed glasses. He has 'Do I dare' tattooed on his wrist, like Emery. A birthmark red string is on his pinky finger.
Personality: When young, he got into a lot of adventurous disasters with Emery. He smiled a lot and enjoyed every moment they spent together. Although his first place to go if not holed up in his room is the library, he secretly waits for Emery to pull him out. As he gets older though, he becomes more interested in research, non-fictions, and puzzles. From the start, he was always good at puzzles and obsessed over them until solved, but now he actively seeks them out in an academic rather than adventurous sense. He remained very close with Emery until their high school graduation, almost dependent. He was always quick to drop whatever book he read in order to follow him, or listen to his advice first. At first when Emery suggested that they part ways, he was devastated and lost. He agreed, but once alone, he didn’t quite know what to do. It took a year until he found his center as an individual.
Currently, he more introspective and even more of a shit-in than before. He has a quiet energy, few friends, and little desire to push himself physically or emotionally, only mentally. Though in secret, he still reads adventure books. The part of his personality that is more active still exists, though it’s more subtle. He still finds himself sighing when locked in the library for an entire day, aching for something to happen. He speaks excitedly when engrossed in explaining a project, or sharply if irritated. Should his long fuse finally ignite, the anger that is released is devastating. Mostly though, if he raises his voice, it’s to chide people he cares about and wishes to protect or because he wishes to be left alone.
Bio: Grew up in a small town, a couple houses down from Emery. He started wearing glasses when 6. His father is a history teacher at the high school and his mother is a housewife. He and Emery have pretty much always known they are soulmates. The red string tied when they turned five, but they felt warmth and happiness every time they touched long before that. Few people leave the small town, so when Samir’s older sister moved away and never came back, he greatly admired her and he and Emery used to talk about doing the same. Samir eventually did leave to attend college and study library science.

“Samir! Samir!” Emery ran down the hallway, arms and legs flailing in his excitement. It’d been a whole week since they’d seen each other! Emery still didn’t know why they had to go on that dumb vacation. Sure, it was fun and all, but it took him away from Samir for far too long and that just wasn’t right. And then they hadn’t even been able to see each other before school started! Emery and Samir hadn’t really spent much time apart since meeting, even before their strings tied, they’d been attached at the hip. Emery had even tried to convince his parents that he could spend the week that his family had been on vacation with Samir’s family. His parents had just rolled their eyes fondly at that, reminding him that he could spend time with Samir once they got back.

Emery collided with Samir wrapping his whole body around the slightly taller boy and not letting go; the pleasant warmth that always came with being near Samir filling his tiny body. It just felt right to be with Samir, like all the words in those stories he loved hearing his mom read to him at night, come to life. “Samir!” He exclaimed again, pulling away to grin at his friend and soulmate. “LOOK! I lost a tooth!” he pointed into his mouth into the gap that was showing between his top teeth, “The tooth fairy even brought me twenty whole dollars! Momma didn’t seem to happy with that…” He paused, eyes crossing slightly as he spoke, not sure why that would upset her.

He grabbed Samir’s hand and tugged at it, the red strings on their pinkie fingers resting next to each other. “Come onnn!” he whined, pulling Samir behind him, knowing the other would follow him with no resistance, but still feeling the need to tug unnecessarily on his hand. “We’ve got to make sure we’re the first ones in the room. I want to make sure the teacher lets us sit next to each other,” he said, school last year had been horrible with Samir all the way across the room; the teacher had been new to the town and hadn’t really considered that any of her students might be tied. She wouldn't let them move either, no matter how much Emery had asked her to.

Emery charged into their classroom, looking around the room, a determined look painting his face, as he looked for the teacher. He grinned when he saw who it was. “Ms. Daisy!” He called, running towards her, hands still clenched with Samir’s. Ms. Daisy lived next door to Emery and his family, and he always wanted her to be his teacher, but they’d always been too young. “You have to let me and Samir sit next to each other. We couldn’t last year and it was horrible! Please, please Ms. Daisy!” He asked, pouting up at her as he spoke, certain it would be too hard to get his way.

Samir didn't like to admit it, but he'd been waiting for this moment, for an entire week really. Emery's voice run out through the school hall, making him flush a second before the other boy collided with him. "E-Emery," he managed, too out of breath to manage more for a couple seconds. "Let me breathe!" Gasping, Samir felt a smile light up his face, not caring even if the other kids stared.

He'd been standing in the hallway, idling for no real reason, but when Emery's arms wrapped around him, he knew this was the exact reason. Everything felt so warm and without having to think, he just relaxed when Emery was around. No one else could do that to him especially since he found it so easy to think.

As their hands twinned and Emery started to pull him away, Samir eagerly followed after. "Ah, no way! My mum said the tooth fairy would bring a dollar when mine falls out," he pouted, pushing forward a loose tooth with his tongue. He guessed about two more days for it, though his mum said next week maybe. He really wondered how Emery managed to get twenty dollars though. Just the thought made his blue eyes sparkle with wonder. "I really want to know what she looks like though. Did you see her?"

Emery charged ahead though, pulling them into the classroom just as Samir finished speaking. Looking up at the teacher through his black-framed glasses, Samir fell silent again. Emery liked to do the talking for both of them, which was fine. They worked together best this way.

Looking down at the pair of boys that had rushed into the classroom, Ms. Daisy felt a fond smile tug on her lips. The boys were always the talk of the town and she couldn't help but find it cute. Laying a hand on Emery's head for a second, she nodded. "That's fine. Just make sure you sit in front so you both listen real well, okay?" she murmured, still smiling. "I want you two to be my best students this year. Then you can show everyone how great you are together. Got it?"

"No," Emery pouted, "I tried to stay up and see her just like we did with Santa last year, but it's like they know to come after you've fallen asleep. And she even got it under my pillow without waking me up! It must be magic!" Emery's eyes were wide as he spoke, unable to believe it.

Listening to Ms. Daisy, Emery nodded his head exuberantly, ready to agree to anything if it got her to let him and Samir sit next to each other. "We will, Ms. Daisy!!" He exclaimed, already pulling Samir away from the teacher to the two desk at the front over by the window. "You'll see, we work better together anyway!" He exclaimed, stating a simple truth that really encompassed everything about their relationship.

Ms. Daisy chuckled, "Of course, you do boys," she said, as other students started filing into the classroom, "I wouldn't expect it to be any other way." She shook her head as she turned away to look for her roster on her desk, not that she wasn't familiar with most of the children already. These two boys really were something, Emery all overflowing energy to Samir's calmness, but they just clicked in that way those tied did. She wondered if it was a little strange to be envious of two children, but considering she wasn't tied yet, maybe it wasn't too surprising.

Emery settled into the seat closest to the window, and directed Samir to the one next to him, "This is going to be the best!" He whisper-exclaimed, "We can work on all our projects together and everything!" He was practically vibrating in his seat from excitement, and it was only the fact that he wanted to show Ms. Daisy that they could handle this that he wasn't bouncing around the whole room. Not that his promise to pay attention lasted the full class, his attention constantly flicking out the window, getting distracted by birds and squirrels throughout the course of the class. But honestly asking Emery to sit completely still for more than fifteen minutes, was just asking too much.

Used to it, Samir let Emery pulled them to the desks where he took the one farther away from the window. As much as he enjoyed everything about their summer vacation, a buzz of excitement made his shoes jitter against the floor. "I can't wait for English class!" he beamed. "And history and science!" Everything really. He grinned at Emery for another second before turning back to the front of the room. All the other students were settling into their desks in wait for the coming lesson. Adjusting his glasses, Samir turned his full attention to the board as Ms. Daisy started to speak.

The social studies and English lessons passed by with papers filled out and handed around, whispered comments between Samir and Emery, and the sound of large, loopy words written on the board. By the time the bell released them, Samir was even more excited than when the class started. Grabbing Emery's hand, he forgot his own shyness in order to pull the other boy back into the hall for their music class. Not his favorite, but still fun.

"This year is great! I'm so glad we get to sit next to each other. Ms. Daisy is really cool!" Catching his breath, Samir slowed his step, trying not to look as excited as he was.

"You're such a nerd," Emery said, but his voice was fond and affectionate, teasing as he grinned over at Samir. Of course, Samir was excited about the actual coursework, while Emery just cared about spending time with the other boy. Emery didn't try to distract him over the course of the class just responded when the other boy whispered to him, knowing Samir would whine at him later if he did. Instead, he daydreamed most of the class, attention flickering in and out on Ms. Daisy's lesson, though he did try to listen, not wanting Samir or Ms. Daisy upset at him for not paying attention. He may have also just have gotten distracted by the squirrels outside the window during the lesson as well.

Emery happily let Samir lead him out of the room for music, content for the moment to let him take charge. "Ms. Daisy is so awesome!" he enthused. "She baked chocolate chip cookies and brought them over once and they were SO good!." He grinned at Samir as he spoke, an easy, happy energy settling over him. This year was off to the perfect start.

"When we get to vote for favorite teacher, I'm totally going to vote for Ms. Daisy!" Samir exclaimed with pride. Every year they got to write their favorite on a piece of paper and hand it in, all the students. It was really fun and made the teacher's happy too. Maybe he might be a teacher when he grew up. He could sit in the library all day then!

Falling in with the line of other students walking to the music room, watched over by the teachers in the hall, they soon made it to their destination. All the kids sat in a group on the floor, eyes roaming over the piano and the small xylophones in the corner. While there were no windows in the room, there was more than enough to look at. Samir didn't like to play music and he certainly did not like to sing, but he found the games fun and filled with adventure. His favorite would always belong to the game they played with The Hall of the Mountain King. The hero rescued the princess only to realize she was a troll and deep into the night he stole away, running from a fate that wasn't his red string.

Samir glanced down at his pinky, feeling his heart stammer for a second. Without thinking about it, he reached for Emery's hand and squeezed it, just wanting to feel the warmth that came from touching his mate. They would never have a story ending like that because they already knew they belonged together. "Do you want to come over to my house and do the homework together later?" he asked before the lesson could start.

"Isn't that getting a little ahead of yourself Samir," Emery teased, bumping his shoulder against Samir's, "It's just the first day of classes!!" He giggled, even though he knew he'd end up voting for Ms. Daisy too when the time came, but he was glad to see his friend so happy with their teacher.

As they settled into the circle of students, Emery's eyes roamed the room and all the instruments, hoping that he'd get to play with something fun, like the tambourine. Something that could make a lot of noise. He grinned over at Samir grabbed for his hand, squeezing it back as warmth tingled through his whole body, starting from the singular point of contact. "I just love music class!" he exclaimed, tongue peaking out between his teeth, as he spoke.

After the students had all settled into a circle, the elderly teacher stepped into the center, getting the class started, her eyes settled on Emery and Samir for several moments, eyes decidedly fond as she watched the too. She remembered the day it'd been confirmed the two were tied, and the stir that had gone through the school and town. People had certainly expected it, but it had still caused quite the fuss. The boys so young, but clearly already so very meant for each other. With that simple thought, she turned to address all the others, beginning the simple lesson, which would lead mostly to a few fun games for the kids. Maybe highlighting those with future music ability, but mostly just to keep them entertained for the afternoon.

Samir knew that Emery was right, but he still couldn't help but feel so excited. He didn't love music nearly so much--it was hard compared to books--but he did like to see Emery enjoy himself. That in itself made him enjoy himself as the teacher led them into a game that involved music notes and learning the different types. A little too much running around for his taste, but every time Samir and Emery found themselves representing the same note, they would hold hands and linger too long together, earning far too many looks in the course of things. Which at the moment, was just fine.

The class flew by as it often did, considering the level of activity that music seemed to entail. Soon, the teacher signaled the class to be over and they were ushered out the door again, their chaperone teacher already in the hall. Finding Emery's hand again, Samir walked quietly through the halls to their next series of classes, not needing words, just the simple touch that neither of them had to think about seeking out.

The rest of the first day of school past in a blur for Emery. What he learned in class didn't matter so much as he could smile and watch Samir soak in just about every word Ms. Daisy said. He knew that when they went home to do homework that Samir would gladly help him with what he'd missed while zoning out. But he couldn't help it, after music class, all he could focus on was how glad he was to be back home. Back where his best friend was. He smiled at the thought, already looking forward to the end of the day and all the time they could spend talking and playing.

And just like that, the end of the day arrived, the final bell ringing signaling that they could leave the classrooms to head to the buses. Of course, under the watchful eyes of a chaperone. The moment the bell had rung, Emery had shot up out of his chair. Standing beside Samir's desk as the smaller boy packed his things at a more sedate pace. As soon as Samir was done, he grabbed his hands tugging him to the door, already eager to be home. And maybe see Samir's parents do. His mom always had the best after school snacks. "Come on!" he said, tugging a little much on his hand, as if being further up in the line would get them home any sooner.

It really was a wonder how fast a single day of school could go by. Did they really not go for a few hours, not half their day? However, here they were at his house with the afternoon sun dancing through a west-facing window, despite the fact that it felt like no time passed at all. The bus ride too had passed in a blur of noisy kids that one had to raise their voice real loud over to be heard. Samir didn't like to, but he did listen to Emery talk the entire way. Even the hum Emery's voice without words made him smile.

"My mum said she would make fresh lemonade so we should get started on the homework first," Samir started, dumping out the contents of his bag on the floor. In the living room by themselves, he and Emery sat on a cream colored rug, shoes off and smiling. Piles of paper spilled from Samir's bag and he spread them out, waiting for Emery to do the same. "I want to look at the book list first!"

Emery nodded and rifled through his own bag, looking for the reading list Emery mentioned. Even if he wasn't quite as excited for the books as Samir, homework was still homework in his mind whether they were fun stories or not, he'd still end up picking the same books. That way they could read it together, and maybe some of Samir's infectious excitement about all things book could spill over to Emery that way. And maybe there'd be some really great stories in there, something that Emery could latch on to and talk about for the next few months. "Sure, we can do that, and then I guess we should start on math." He wrinkled his nose as he spoke. While the books held the possibility of excitement, there was nothing exciting to be found in math. At least not in Emery's eyes.

The boys quickly pulled out the two lists reading over them, each throwing out titles that sounded interesting or excitement. Emery suggested The Boxcar Children, thinking it sounded exciting, even if he didn't know exactly what the title meant. But the little description the teacher had provided next to it said it was an adventure and mystery series, and that sounded like it's be interesting.
As the two boys sat bickering slightly over what books to pick, Samir's mother walked into the room observing the two boys, who were sitting shoulder to shoulder, bodies brushing with every impassioned movement, with soft eyes.

Samir's mother never had the same luxury that the two kids had. Even with a talented matchmaker, it still took her years to follow her red thread to to the right man. And some days, she still felt that the two boys talking about books looked more in love. They were too young still for the real meaning of romance, but the love was still there, perfect. Finally, she interrupted them after minutes of watching. "The lemonade is ready. Do you want vegetable or pork samosas today?" She smiled, pushing back her long dark hair with elegant fingers. Indeed, she couldn't be more proud of the two boys, but now wasn't the time to think hard about it.

Samir held tight to the math papers they just started, not yet wanting to let go even if he felt a similar disinterest in the subject. He just held onto the idea that one day it might become very useful. "We have pork mum?! Ah, Emery, do you want pork today...?" he asked with a hint of hesitation although he perked up immediately at the mention of the samosas. It was only right to let Emery pick since he was pretty sure Emery just let him pick the books. At least they got to pick together.

"Of course. Should I heat up some of both for you?" Ushering the children into the kitchen, Samir's mother started pulling plastic containers from the fridge.

"I'm good with whatever Samir," Emery smiled, "You're mom's cooking is always so good!" It didn't take much for Mrs. Aeolius to get Emery to head toward the kitchen. The young boy was always eager for the food he ate while over at Samir's. It was always so delicious and home cooked and spicy in a way the food at his home wasn't. Not that his dad's cooking wasn't good, but what Mrs. Aeolius cooked was just special, though maybe that was just because it had to do with Samir.

He settled into one of the chairs, wriggling slightly in his excitement, while grabbing onto the lemonade glass already set on the table and gulping some down eagerly. "This is great mom!" he said, smiling over at her. "Thank you so much for making it for us." It definitely made the fact that they had to do homework better that they could have breaks like this.

Samir's mother smiled at Emery and her own son as he took the chair opposite, smiling at the leftovers she'd warmed up. "Of course, it's no problem, dear," she chuckled. To her, both of the boys were her children and it was the same for Emery's mother who had become her close friend. Many a night they spent talking about their children and the future they would grow up into. Pausing before returning to the dining area and he embroidery project, she place a hand on both their chairs, drawing Samir's eye as he sensed the deep words coming. His mother just smiled though, shaking her head. "Boys, you really are the best children a mother could ask for. I know you'll only grow up to be more perfect too." With that, she slipped away, leaving the boys to their snack and homework.

"Yes, Samir and I are gonna be together forever and ever, just like in all those storybooks Mama used to read to me!" he exclaimed, certain to the core to his words. After all, that's what the thread meant and why being around Samir felt so good and right. They were meant fore each other, and they'd be the bestest friends for their whole lives. Emery was sure of it and didn't want it any other way. He turned his bright excited eyes on the other, "Isn't that right Samir?"

Samir smiled, answered back Emery's words with the simplest ease. "Of course. We're soulmates right?" Nothing to argue about. In his bright blue eyes, the future could show nothing else. And as he gazed at Emery from across the table, holding out his pinky so the two of them could twin them together, he couldn't imagine wanting it any other way. This was perfect. This was how they were meant to be.

And just like that the two boys grew up. Emery didn’t exist without Samir and Samir without Emery. Every one in the town knew it, and it was so rare to find one of the two boys without the other that more concern was warranted when they turned up without each other rather than with. There parents certainly never expected just one of them home from school. It was either both of them, or neither of them. Each set of parents doting on the boys like they were their own; each parent ultimately having a stake in raising them. And really no one in the town was surprised by how close they were. Two kids that had tied that young? It was the dream wasn’t it? To get to grow up with your soulmate, experience everything with them? To not have to spend years waiting and wondering and worrying. To know they’d always been with you. It was certainly all any of the adults talked about around the two boys.

So the pages kept turning in their story. One day, they were seven and swinging from the monkey bars and running around the park, parents watching from a distance grins on their faces. Emery fearlessly leading them forward into adventure. The next, they were charging headlong into the woods, parents no longer watching them as closely as they once had, trusting the two boys to keep each other safe. And wherever Emery lead, Samir was sure to follow. It was always, Emery who moved forward first, who proposed some crazy idea. It was always Emery that got them into to trouble. Like that time Emery had decided to try and jump across a small ravine, nothing too deep, and fallen and broken his wrist. Or the time they’d both been grounded for a week when they’d gone missing for several hours, causing both their parents to freak. It’d been Emery who’d been behind that too, leading them farther away from their houses and causing them to get lost. And for every bit of trouble Emery got them into, Samir always got them out. Kept them safe.

It was clear exactly why’d they’d tied. To everyone who looked at them, it was clear the two boys balanced each other. The idea soulmate match. The stuff of storybooks. At least that’s how it seemed.

And it was those storybook stories that Emery learned to love more and more as he got older. His childish delight in them never subsiding in his heart. The stories of soulmates defying the odds to be together. Or finding each other in the perfect moment when they needed each other most. The prince saving his princess, or vice versa, and then discovering they’d been tied all along. Sometimes, Emery even imagined a storybook of their own. Two little boys who one day brushed against each other, and grew up to take on the world together, the red thread always dangling between them.

Of course, they were living the perfect love story weren’t they? That’s what Emery kept hearing. Every where they went, every new person who learned they’d tied so young. That it was so amazing that it’d happen. That they were so lucky. And well, Emery didn’t see any reason not to believe them, because every moment with Samir was absolutely amazing. That warm, bubbling, overflowing warmth field his whole body, making every touch and moment more. And honestly, as they got older, Emery couldn’t wait for whatever future they’d get to take on together.

By the time they turned thirteen, almost nothing had changed between the boys. They grew up, yes, but the bright eyed-child's love that shone in their gazes when they met, that never dimmed. Perhaps, it grew even brighter. The winter break of their final year of junior high approached and Samir found himself alone in the library, three books spread out in front of him with two more stacked at his side. Rather than taking up a table, he'd made a nest in the corner with his back to a shelf and a window just above him, showing a sunny day with a breeze making the leaves dance. Although he paid little attention to them, he was aware of the trees outside. Was Emery playing with the other boys by the soccer field? Samir might have joined them three years ago, but the idea of sports made him a little unnerved. He'd rather play with just Emery and no one else.

Focusing on the pages of Tom Sawyer again, Samir settled back. Maybe he just came to the library to wait. Because it was inevitable. At some point between the exciting pages of the books, Emery would show his face and drag Samir away. And without a doubt, he would go.

"There you are!" Emery exclaimed, voice entirely too loud for the calm of the library, as he scrambled up to Samir, recent growth spurt limbs uncoordinated, especially in his excitement. "Why I didn't look here first I don't know. You're always in the library these days, Samir!" He grabbed the other boys arms, pulling him up, "Come on, everyone's gathering in the park for a water balloon fight, we can't miss it!"

He pulled Samir out of the library with him, disregarding the mess that would inevitably be left behind. He knew Samir would be back later and the books probably wouldn't have been moved, except maybe straightened up by the old librarian, Mr. Dorcette. A librarian who had long giving up chastising Emery's outbursts, and held an honest soft spot for the two boys. Often, reminiscing about his youth and meeting his soulmate in front of them and every now and then, especially in the cold months, surprising the boys with a treat like hot cocoa.

"I need you on my team, today! We're gonna finally beat Ryan and show him just why we're so awesome!" Emery exclaimed, a determined look painting over his feature.

Samir lifted his eyes over the edge of his book, slowly, like he didn't expect an interruption at all. His glasses had slid to the bottom of his nose, dark hair still styled back away from his forehead. "Well yes, I-" But Samir never had to chance to finish that thought. Like usual, Emery just grabbed his hands, pulling Samir up and away from nest of books he created. Huffing, he felt a little indignant at the mess they left, bothered that things always turned out this way. And yet...his entire being also seemed to soar. Feeling Emery's hand in his, the trill and expectation of the adventure he liked so much. Books gave him the dreams, but Emery gave him the reality. At this point, Samir knew that if Emery asked it, he would follow without hesitation.

As they ran outside and down the sidewalk toward the park, they slowed their pace enough that Samir could respond without risk of choking on his own breath. "It's bad to leave the books like that, you know. Mr. Dorcette might get mad one day." Emery got his growth spurt first and currently stood taller, though Samir already started to catch up. Grow, chase. They were always like that. The park came into view and a small pouty frown crossed over Samir's face, though he never once tried to pull his hand away from Emery's. "And besides, if it's a water balloon fight, wouldn't it be better to ask Edison or Ricky to play? I'm not good at things like this..."

"Mr. Dorcette loves us. I think we'd have to lot more than just cause a little mess for him to make him angry," Emery said, not the slightest bit concerned about it. His mom had said something about them probably reminding Mr. Dorcette of his own kids, what with how nice the older man was to them. Besides, he knew Samir would be back later in the day and apology for any antics that Emery caused. It's just how they were.

"But they're not my soulmate," Emery whined, "I don't care if they're more athletic or what. You're my perfect teammate. It'll be better and more fun with you!" Emery pulled them forward into the park where a group of similar age kids were waiting for them. There was also a couple of coolers of water balloons there, and a couple of concerned parents or bereaved older siblings hanging around, clearly having helped ensure the presence of the water balloons. Emery grinned at their classmates, "I found him!" he said, now we can actually begin. His body was practically vibrating with excitement, or maybe some of that was just that he still hadn't let go of Samir's hand.

Samir pouted even though he knew that Emery was right. Sometimes he suspected that they could get away with anything because the whole town loved these two boys bonded so early. Samir was old enough to realize that now--not just that they were special, but that everyone almost revered them for it. Squeezing Emery's hand, he let himself continue to be pulled until they were in the park itself.

"I know. It's because you're my soulmate that I let you pull me here, you know," he murmured, the words just for Emery and not the other boys and two feisty looking girls that made up the group, one of which seemed to have dragged their sibling from a grade up into their game. If not for the thrill of excitement that started in his toes, Samir might feel nervous to take part in the fight. "And besides, I like winning almost as much as you." Pushing up his glasses, he grinned, hefting a water balloon into his hand.

"I knowwww," Emery whined, just resisting stomping his foot, "Otherwise, you'd spend all day in the library. Really, you should be thankful for me. I make sure you don't turn to dust in the corners of the library!" He grinned, grabbing a couple of his own water balloons. He showed them to Samir and then smirked over at the group of gathered teens and pre-teens. It was time for game on.

With a vicious yell, Emery launched his first ballon, the balloon bursting at Edison's feet with a large splash of water, and just like that water balloons were flying between the kids and yells of victory and defeat flying through the air. Before long, every one of those playing was soaked through, clothes clinging in slightly uncomfortable ways. The entire time Emery and Samir kept close to each other, slinging balloons often in revenge for the other one getting splashed and giggling and laughing the whole time.
