. the birth of raijou, put'ih, and quv seng .

E'ris was alone.

She had always been alone. She had never asked anything of anyone, and in turn, no one had ever asked anything of her. Even now she did not break this silent contract. She lay alone with her labored breaths and swollen belly on the outskirts of Sikulen Hall, at an out-of-the-way place where few Ikal bothered go. She had created her den in a small niche in the rocks. Nearby there was trickle of water from a small stream and unappetizing but edible vegetation.

It was afternoon. The weather was thankfully pleasant and mild. It began.

***

Hours later, E'ris lay tired and grim. Three wet puppies snuggled at her side. There was no doubting their parentage. One of the females was the splitting image of their father. And if that were not enough, there was even a Vachen among her whelp. No one could know of their heritage, or they would never know peace.

E'ris had no intention of raising these puppies. Nor did she intend to approach the father. A pregnant lover is never welcome. Alyan in particular would probably eat them. But she wasn't cold-hearted enough to leave them to die. So she began to plan.

***

E'ris begrudgingly mothered her children until they opened their eyes and began to stumble about their den. Then, it was time. One by one, she took her whelp in maw. She took them into the Kaizhar territory and hid them, using her knowledge of the land and of its inhabitants to leave each somewhere where they would be found by someone who would want them rather than something that would eat them.

Their pitiful squeaks and wails stir a long-dormant maternal instinct in her heart, but her wanderlust quickly smothers it. Free from her burdens, E'ris resumes her travels.
