George Orwell invented the six word story when he wrote one of his masterpieces:
Quote:
“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”
|
The book Not Quite What I Was Planning has also popularized the 6 word story by asking people to write their memoir. By fitting your entire life into so few words, you have to focus on exactly what you find to be most important.
I've always found this to be a great writing exercise. It's quick, it's relatively easy to accomplish, but it's very, very hard to come up with a final product that you're happy with.
A few of mine are:
Surprisingly, I have yet to fall.
Sought democracy; found only frat parties.
There's never enough time for libraries.
Um guys, that's not my name.
Can you write a 6 word memoir?

My six word memoir for the very recent past is exceedingly simple.
"I'm not sure what to do."
Along side that is:
"Wasted potential? Aw what the hell!"
Describing my life as a whole is much more difficult, however.

^ This is one of those things that you find your mind drifting to at odd moments. I know that I'll start to think about a memoir in the morning and little by little I'll edit it throughout the day.

Haha, the challenge is in making it match up perfectly. Unless you make the effort to plan it out and specifically decide want you want to say, the exercise won't work.

Interesting idea!
"You are all that I want."
"I'm only looking for your approval."
"I know, but I am trying."
"I can't go; it's not real."
"I am not a strong person."
"Don't assume that I'm like you."
Maybe that was so many that it defeated the purpose of summing yourself up in JUST six words, but I was having fun. xD

Coming up with a lot isn't a bad thing - It's just tough to create some that you're really, perfectly happy with.
The idea is to look at your life and just keep editing it down and down until there's only six words left. If you can create more than one memoir, then you're just looking at different aspects of your life instead of it as a whole.

Yeah, all I could manage was just different aspects, though.
The first three were about the biggest aspects, and the last three about smaller ones. I just realized that I did six six word memoirs... xD That wasn't even intentional.

I shouldn't have bought that knife.
YES!
Work and back; across the snow.
That works better with seven words...
The caffiene keeps me feeling awake.
Obvious, but so very true.
