This was an introduction post for a group role-play about a bunch of teenagers/young adults that had troubles getting to sleep at night for various reasons, so they'd all meet up at an abandoned house. My character was an older male on the autism spectrum.
The fact that his parents were fighting wasn’t anything new. It had been going on for years, for as long as he could remember. When they were kids (he was perhaps ten at the time) his older sister, Emma, had commented that their parents had never so much as argued before he was born. It was his fault they were so unhappy, she said, because dad wanted a normal boy and they got him instead. She had always been a real bitch. Whether it was his fault or not, the fighting between their parents only escalated from there until finally reaching its boiling point over nine years later.
Divorce. His parents had made the announcement over an early spaghetti dinner. And while both his older and younger siblings argued the idea and sobbed (as if that would somehow change everything), all Isaiah could do was stare down at his half finished plate and ponder why they had decided on spaghetti. Spaghetti was only served on Fridays – not on Tuesdays. Never Tuesday. Tuesday was reserved for leftovers or pizza, whichever the small family of five agreed upon. Personally, he had been looking forward to a nice greasy slice of pepperoni. Instead he got soggy noodles and canned sauce. Maybe his parents thought spaghetti would make the news easier to bear. Silly logic if that was the case. Silly logic from silly parents.
His mother found him in his bedroom almost two hours after dinner had been finished. He was sitting at his desk, his body slumped forward and his face crumpled in concentration as he scribbled an endless stream of words into a notebook. There were several scattered around the desk and even more hidden in various places around the room. ”Zay?.... Zaiah?... Isaiah?” Shuddering softly, he slowly poked his head upright, his bright blue eyes landing on the woman making her way further into the room. The poor woman looked absolutely sapped of energy. He watched as she took a seat on his bed then abruptly closed the notepad he was working on in order to give her his full attention, although he never looked at her eyes. Instead he focused on her mouth, as was normal for him. His mother looked at him with sunken eyes and managed a sad smile. "How are you handling all this? You okay?"
Isaiah blinked several times then shrugged. "I'm fine," he admitted quietly, not quite sure what else to say. The idea of divorce didn't really bother him. It had been a long time coming. "You look like you've sprouted a couple extra gray hairs though."
His mother laughed despite herself and gave her long hair an anxious pat. "I want to talk to you about something. I've given it a lot of thought - a lot of thought - and I think I'm going to move once the divorce is finalized." He stiffened in his seat, his brows furrowing slightly. "I need a fresh start from this, you know? I think it'd be good to get away from a while, a couple of years at least. I've already spoken to your sisters and I think they're wanting to stay here with dad - finish school and be with their friends and whatnot. Do you want to stay here as well? That's fine if that's what you want to do. I know you don't like change very much and moving would be, well, a really big one for you."
"I don’t… uh… where, uh, would we go?"
"I don't know... somewhere far away preferably." What did she expect him to say to that? Divorce was one thing, but moving? That was a whole other ballpark. He was comfortable here - he had routine and structure and therapies and he finally had a couple friends that really accepted him for who he was. His heart began to race, its thudding becoming loud and more drum-like with each passing second. "I... I'm kind of tired. I think I'm going to go to bed... Can I think about it more?" His mother nodded, saying nothing, and made a quick shuffle from the room, making sure to close the door behind her.
Isaiah looked from the door back down to his desk. He didn’t know what to think! He didn’t know what to feel! Anxious fingers drew a notepad close and clutched it with growing desperation. ”I can’t go.” He muttered quietly before snatching his pencil up and flipping the notepad open. ”It’s stupid, it’s…” He groaned loudly, the upper half of his body slumping forward towards the desk. His forehead pressed against its cool surface and he allowed his eyes to close, hoping against hope it would help clear his head…
”—just get the hell out of here already! Jesus fucking Christ, Deb!”
”Don’t you talk to me like that! This is my house, too!”
Somewhere a door slammed and the entire house shuddered. Isaiah released a drowsy grunt, his eyes fluttering open, as he forced himself to sit upright once more. How much time had passed? The world outside his window was dark. A glance to the clock confirmed it was well after midnight. Fantastic. "Don't you walk away from me when I'm talking to you!" He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and stumbled back to his feet, his joints creaking noisily in protest. Perhaps falling asleep at his desk hadn't been the smartest thing to do. The makings of a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth and he began shoving the notepad he had been working on into the back pocket of his jeans. "You just plan on taking him with you? Don't I get a fucking say?!" He paused in his tracks, blue eyes widening slightly. "I think it would be better for him, yes! But it's not up to me!" "Why?! Why is it so much fucking better with you?!" "I work with him, Joe! Maybe if you put some actual effort into helping out, maybe he'd be able to stay, but--!" Empty hands flew to his ears in attempt to stifle out all that he was hearing. A small whimper slipped from his mouth and he looked from the door to the clock and then to the window. He needed to get out of here! It was close enough to four! His hands left his ears and he made a deliberate bee-line for the window. He pulled it open and with one final glance over his shoulder, he climbed out and emerged into the brisk morning air.
He moved quickly, his feet sloshing through the mud and the muck that had gathered from the previous day's rain. On a normal day his journey would have taken him a good half hour, most of it spent going at a snail's pace while daydreaming about anything and everything. Today, as anxious and ruffled as he was, it only took fifteen. He paused as he came to the front door and drew a long, breath - his teeth chattering insistently all the while. After a silent count to three, he cracked Jonesy's crooked grin and stepped inside. He was pleased to find how much warmer it was inside. "Hello-ooo?" His voice bounced off the walls. "Anybody home?" It seemed he was the first to arrive. Or perhaps there was someone else there and they were off in another part of the house. It didn't matter to him. He went straight to the main sitting room and collapsed into one of the big comfy chairs. The feel of the cushions enveloping him made him giggle with delight and he promptly folded his arms loosely across his chest and closed his eyes once more. Sleep would never come now (especially since he had made the mistake of dozing off earlier).
It was just nice to be able to relax. To simply... be.
