it was so great. the funny thing was that at the begining of the trip he's the same guy who was like "I'm a member of the texan communist party and i know more about canadians than other texans because i'm open minded" :XD

HAHA! Doesn't sound to open minded to me. Wait...why do you need to be open minded to know about Canadians?

I have no idea he was kind of a weiner!
But we had fun anyways. I made a contest out of seeing if some of the other texans could name a higher percentage of territories and provinces than i could percentage of states and i totally won! it was an okay time though the alabama group was really young like 10-13 and i dont think they really got anything out of the trip

I'm not surprised you won. Our knowledge of the world seems to just stop all of a sudden at the northern border in the U.S. I live in Massachusetts - I could be in Canada before the sun came up if I started driving now, but I know more about what's going on in Mexico right now than I do about Canada. A volcano could erupt in the middle of Ottawa and it wouldn't make the news until the ash cloud reached the border.

Great chart for the metric impared here.

omg that chart is super super awesome!
i love the little stick people :XD

I was surprised the first time i saw that map of the U.S with water all around it. And i thought "no wonder kids can't find the U.S on a map they're looking for a big island!"
But as long as i've got some americans around is that map for real? like really do they have it in schools like that with no mexico or canada attached?

I'm not sure what map you were referring to, but now that I think about it my daughters have this little kid's puzzle of the U.S. and it may be all surrounded by blue.

*goes to check*

OMG,it is! I hadn't even thought about it that way. What's worse, there's a light blue around the edges that kind of implies shallow water, but it wraps all the way around from north of Maine, clockwise to north of Washington, implying that there might be something North of the U.S. with a smaller border than the real one, but there's nothing to the south! Not that my three-year-old is likely to pick up on that, she's just going to see an island. And I was thinking it was a great puzzle because it's sized to do on the floor and most of the states are separate pieces so she can get used to them. I guess we'd better spend a little time looking at the USA's place on the globe tomorrow.

awe! :XD
It's not your fault:D
the fact that things like that are even made though boggles my mind.
In canada every map is atatched to the u.s I mean why wouldn't it be?
It's almost beyond my comprehension.

... xD; I can't tell if you guys are reading too much into this or if the US puzzle makers are really arrogant about their country.

EDIT:

@ Temp - WTF? ._. It does make the US look like one floatin' island.

@Temp ... it sure is weird how those lakes float in the ocean at the top and how alaska is down near hawaii, which is where mexico should be :XD

The Alaskans would probably like it. :)

Maybe they just didn't know how to draw other countries?

ETA: The lakes at the top may be why there isn't a light blue shoreline there - the kiddies would have realized it was a cover-up.

i guess they couldn't leave the lakes out because they're important for trade and the map likes to tell you some exports it looks like.
yep texas exports cowboys:XD

Massachusetts doesn't get any exports, and they lopped off Cape Cod.

I checked by the way, and half of Michigan is not a different color on the actual puzzle.

Arkansas and Nevada just get lizards and rattlesnakes. I bet this puzzle doesn't sell too well there.

haha!
Maybe you should write the company a letter?

If it makes you feel better i read an article about a floor that the canadian broadcasting headquarters got put in of a map of canada and it was totally messed up because the guys making it made some provinces disproportionatly larger and one mid-canada province was missing, alberta i think.
anyways they had to tear it out quick
but i think that story ends with that it was an american design firm so maybe that doens't help... i dont for sure remember though it could have been some silly canadians too

Wow, I was guessing the company was in California, based on how the New England states are drawn, but the address on the box is in Connecticut, just south of me. I guess the Cape was inconvenient for keeping the puzzle simple. Either that or Connecticut has Cape envy.

ETA: I'm certainly guessing it was an American firm.

That's what I was going to say...I would be so confused if I thought that's where they were and yet pics of Alaska have lots of snow and Hawaii has beaches and palm trees. o_O

Yes well moving Hawaii and Alaska is traditional in maps showing the USA. Usuly they put them in a box.

Editing out mexico and Canada is rather crass but they probalby think. It's the USA no one cares about those forien countries.

Or mebie they're just mentaly impaired.
