Setting

The world was a normal world like Earth, until an asteroid hit it. The results of that were amazing. Magic clouds full of purple lightening that causes plants to grow weird (and often deadly.) Ice Age in the tropics. Volcanic mayhem in the cold regions making them not so cold. All technology is gone, and what exists doesn't work. People are finding out that animals have become more dangerous. Rabbits with fangs. Dogs with poisonous talons.

Also, this new world has had a peculiar affect on humans. Some are able to do things that previously they couldn't. Some people, filled with fear of the changing humanity, became hermits. Others banded together forming communities that range from 10 people to 30 people. Still others have created gangs that attempt to rule their area's in either a bully way or a tough love way. Some work and some don't.

The air was filled with the sulfuric smell of an active volcano. Indeed there was three spewing in the distance, a constant reminder of the turmoil that now existed. Cana floated in the air surveying the land around her. It was the volcanic activity behind her or the purple lightning storms that were coming in front of her that held her attention. It was the small details in the forest edge. Any signs of other life could be an enemy. A rival group fighting for resources and survival. She looked over her shoulder at her home, her brown eyes blending with her dark brown hair. Everyone was in, all 15 that made up the village. She turned and flew on back, crossing the charred ground. Everything was charred. The trees at the edge of the forest that marked the edge of the last volcanic blast wave. The ground that was outside the village walls. Only inside where hard work and sweat finally got through the shiny black molten rock to plant gardens testified to survival. That and the wild forest beyond.

In that wild forest, another small group of 5 men sat around a fire. They were sheltered in a cave safe from the frequent purple lightning storms. Ever since that large rock of mystery crossed into their world from the sky, life hadn't been the same. Out of their lumber company, only the 4 remained. One of them had his kid along. Now the father of the kid was retelling the story of Star Wars. He had just gotten to the famous "I am your father" part when thunder peeled across the sky. Instinctively everyone silenced to listen for any aftermath hint of attack. The predators seemed more riled up during storms. In a corner and furthest from the opening of the cave sat Brad. Part of the lumber company in the most delicate sense, he had the thin limbs of an office worker and nimble fingers of a tailor. He paused in his refined way, the jacket he was mending glimmering a little, to acknowledge that nothing had tried to come near the mouth of the cave before returning to work. With luck, the spell he had weaved into the banner that hung over the doorway would been the wild beasts out.

Sweat dripping down her brow, Mai wiped it off with the back of her hand, her red hair glowed like fire in the dull light. Looking up, she could see the familiar dark brown hair of Cana out over the village gazing at who knows what. She flinched as thunder rumbled loudly in her ears, vibrating the ground around her slightly. As she regained her composure, she picked up the log on the ground before her, probably 3 times her size, as if it were a flour sack and began walking to the other side of the village towards the direction Cana was facing.

As she reached her destination, she set the log down, stretching her stiff limbs with a sigh of relief. Sometimes doing the dirty work for the village can be very hard on the body, even for a strong girl like Mai. She took the ribbon around her wrist and tied her long red locks into a very messy ponytail. Looking out to the large trees on the other side of the wall, she overheard the male workers she usually worked with talking amongst themselves. Something about going past the borders of the charred trees to the deeper forest to find the thickest trees to last them a whole year caught her ear, and she turned to the voices, only to find that the source was staring right back at her. She blinked, assuming they were going to make her go and have her carry it. Not that she would refuse for it sounded like a very cool adventure to take on, but would Cana approve? By their looks it seems to Mai that they intended it to be a secret, but Mai wasn't born a liar. Spinning on her heel, she jogged over to Cana's general direction, and looked up at her, and waved wildly,"Cana! Miss Cana!" She yelled as loud as she could, wanting to share her new findings with the woman.

-------

A flash, then another and another, followed by a series of rustles and the heavy strain of a weight on think branches which was in no case quiet, in fact, it was quite loud and obvious, not that the traveller cared. Black heavy duty boots hit a thick branch, the leaves rustling from the sudden weight and abnormal birds of different sizes and shapes flying off in every so direction. Pale, and dirty bleached hair blew into a slightly tanned face, framing pinking eyes that had dilated pupils and blacked parts where the white of his eyes should be, Karlos stood pretty high above the ground, gazing at the horizon. He had spotted a village not to far off, and wanted to get a closer look. Maybe it was finally a place to settle down. He was going to land and make his presence known, but one thing deterred him from doing so. He saw a woman floating in the air, about the same height as he was at that moment on the branch, scouting around the trees he was hidden in, or at least her thought he was. Even though he knew he could just sweet talk his way in, he held back, something about the brown haired girl suspended in space didn't seem very safe to approach. He though her brown eyes landed on him but he wasn't sure and wasn't going to stay and find out.

Flashing out, he landed on the ground away from the village and started to run off the other way, though again, not very quietly, so he caught a bit of attention, especially with his flashing from place to place. He stopped again. A cave, wide and gaping, was not too far on his left, flashing up, he landed on a branch nearby, analyzing the cave. It was probably occupied, though impossible to see from his angle, so he went to test it. Digging into his pocket, he pulled out a fee stones, mostly picked up to help start fires and such, and threw it at the cave. It landed in front of the cave mouth, bouncing twice before being still. He flashed up higher to the top to get a better look, but forgot about the lightning storm above him. Purple lightning struck him, not as strong as usual and blinded him,"Ah crap-!" He fell off the top but flashed in time to land, not so gently, on a branch near the middle, but farther off from the cave. The distortion from the lightning had left him confused, and teleported at blind will, sighing, somehow he made his way down the tree, and now quietly made his way over to the cave, being careful not to tread upon hostile animals.

Niamh curled in on herself, shivering, clenching her jaw to keep her teeth from chattering. She wanted to be strong, to keep her brother from worrying, but she was cold, and the fire wasn't doing her much good.

She was beginning to forget what it felt like to be warm. How long had it been? Six months since the power went out? Two since their tutor left-- the last one of the staff to desert them. "You're old enough now to fend for yourselves; you must find your own way."

Niamh didn't feel old enough for anything. How much did age matter, anyway, in a world where you needed survival skills? Niamh had no idea how to light a fire, how to cook, how to tell edible plants from poisonous ones. She didn't have the first clue how to hunt, and the way the animals were acting lately, well ... she had no desire to learn. Niall had to do everything, and the least she could do was put on a smile and tell him she wasn't cold. If she were braver, she'd disappear forever and stop being a burden.

**

Niall turned the spit over the fire thoughtfully as he regarded his sister. She looked miserable.

Well, who wouldn't be miserable? The freaking world had ended. They were more alone than they had ever been in their lives, and not a single thing that they cared about-- except each other-- had survived.

He missed books. There had been no time to save anything when the rioters came, no time to do anything but throw on some warm clothes and hit the streets. They'd lost Tutor Stephens in the shuffle. Niall hunched deeper into his long, dark coat, thought for a moment, and then took it off to drape over his sister's shoulders.

"We're going to be okay," he said, barely catching the end of the spit before it tipped into the fire. And they were. They had to be.
