After their meeting ended, Ren said a polite, but simple farewell. The lack of personal conversation made things much easier on him, but he still felt grateful to leave. He marked the date three days away in his phone then drove back to his apartment, taking the elevator up to one of the top floors in the large building. It wasn't what most people expected, but then, he shared so little about himself that most people didn't know what to expect with him at all.

Ren dropped onto the large sofa in the main room, staring out at the spacious room, then down to the hall and the pane of windows opposite of it. The city spread out below him, somewhat pretty, but still dull. He never dragged up the effort to cover the panes in blinds like he always thought he would. Beautiful furniture, sparkling appliances, space, so much space--it was a gift from his parents that he never asked for. Sometimes it felt too big, especially after being in Tristian's cluttered studio. Ren groaned and finally got up to get himself some food and change his clothes.

For a second, he found himself staring the mark on top of his foot. Three peacock feathers seemed like such a strange things, but in its own way, the mark looked more beautiful than any art. He never cared for paintings or designs, but the wisps of the feathers filled him with a quiet energy. Ren brushed a finger against the top of his foot before slipping on a pair of socks and putting the thought of soulmates out of his head once again. Thoughts like that only made him feel more empty inside than he already knew he was.

Tristian continued working for several hours straight after Ren left: selecting fabrics and sewing shirts and making the modifications necessary to the outfits he had Ren try on. He probably would have worked through the night again, if Annette, his personal assistant, hadn't come and forcefully dragged him home. She made sure he was fed and pushed him towards the shower before she finally left to go sleep herself, knowing from experience that Tristian would take care of himself once set on the right path.

Which Tristian did just that, starting to feel how tired his body was, as he often did after working for so long straight. He showered, his movements slow as he scrubbed off the grime of a couple days at the study, despite his tiredness still taking particular care in washing his hair, know how crucial it was to keeping his hair looking health. He finished quickly enough given that his eyes barely wanted to remain open anymore.

As he was drying off, his eyes drifted over the mark on his shoulder, though he didn't give it much thought. It was part of him, had been since he was almost twelve. It's not like it'd made any difference in how quickly he found his mate, to get his mark early. So after teenage years spent hoping, and even some of his early twenties, he'd moved on to other stuff. If the person the mark represented ever showed there face that would be great, but Tristian was more concerned with establishing himself in the fashion industry. He could do that just fine without his mate, and that's exactly what he planned to do.

Despite having a new job, Ren did the same things he always did. He couldn't say anything significant changed besides where he went to work, and well, Tristian certainly was no Yasu. But that only increased his need to not be alone for whatever reason. Maybe because the guy was so noisy and his apartment so quiet, he found himself at one of the clubs he'd become so infamous at a night later. As much as Ren didn't like social functions and parties, he found himself gravitating to places like this again and again.

Due to his looks, girls always circled around him. "Wow, you're gorgeous. Are you a model?" a young woman with honey colored hair tied up in a high side ponytail asked him. Ren's eyes flicked over. She didn't look much like a peacock feather, but her wide blue-green eyes captured him for a moment.

"Yes." A simple answer followed by a sip at his drink. Rather than put her off though, the girl giggled with delight. And just like that, he gained her name--Laina--and her number. They talked, or mostly she did for the rest of the night until he escorted her home like an actual boyfriend. In another couple nights, it would probably be another girl. He lifted his hand in a lifeless wave, not expecting different results this time, but unable to stop himself anyway. He had too many more days until someone else required his presence.

Tristian hummed quietly to himself as he walked to work. He'd had Annette make sure he kept regular hours for the past three days as it was always better to deal with his entire staff when he had a good bit of rest and sanity about him. That meant today he looked decidedly unfrazzled, but significantly more relaxed than when he was out at a party.

He was dress in tight-fitted jeans that were purposefully and artfully distressed with both bleached patches and ripped parts, a black thin belt, and a tight graphic tee with an abstract colorful pattern on it. It was a simple look, but one that was comfortable and perfect for meeting his staff. His hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, with no lose strands in sight, though that rarely seemed to laugh.

As he walked, he kept his eyes roaming around, looking at people, wondering what their stories were, if they'd me their soulmates, if they had general, if they were eternal loners. What jobs they did. He always wondered it all, and sometimes he really wanted to ask a particularly interesting looking stranger he saw, but he couldn't. Instead as his eyes drifted over the crowd, he noticed a familiar figure across the way and couldn't stop the little bit of a smile that started to form on his face.

Despite his assurances that this would go all wrong, Ren gravitated right back to Laina. (He needed to remind himself of the name though). Like so many times in the past, he couldn't bear to stay in his apartment. Laina, in all her graciousness, let him stay. Pity or passion, he didn't care which and just played the part of whatever she wanted without meaning to at all. Just like always. And just like always, she saw through him.

"I just showed you my mark. Shouldn't you show some reaction?"

They stood in the doorway, Laina about to send him home where she leaned in close sharing a secret look at her collar bone. Ren hummed. It was a bristling cat, twisted around on itself.

"What? Don't tell me..." She'd become used to conversing with herself and answered her own unspoken question. "You weren't even searching in the first place. You don't care about the mark at all!" Laina exclaimed. "What is this to you? I understand playing around because that's what we all do there at the clubs! But that's how you find your mate and you were acting serious with me! I get it though. From the start you already knew!"

He turned his eyes away, confirming what she already decided. He knew from the first time she spoke that they weren't soulmates, but he used her anyway. To many people, there couldn't be a worse crime. Her palm slapped his cheek before he could blink, not that he would. It was....expected.

For a span of five seconds, they just stared at each other. Laina waited for something, some kind of reaction perhaps, but Ren couldn't find any words to say. He supposed the proper words didn't exist. "Sorry," he finally sighed, his eyes cast somewhere toward the ground. She hesitated before she shook her head at him then turned, slamming her door shut again. He just stood there, never realizing he gained he eyes of others.

Before Tristian could call out to Ren and run over to great him, he realized the male was in something of a seriously conversation with what appeared to be some women. He stopped and instead just watched curious if this was his model's girlfriend or something. Maybe, he'd get to see the model act something other than stone-faced. It'd certainly be interesting to see him give a genuine smile. However, as he watched, he realized whatever conversation was taking place had to be distinctly negative.

This thought was proven when not even seconds later the girl slapped Ren with some considerable force. Tristian's eyes widened as he watched, and noticed that Ren seemed as stoic as ever in the face of something that must have surely hurt.

"What is with this guy?" Tristian couldn't help but murmur. He literally seemed to have had no reaction whatsoever. And Tristian couldn't even begin to understand how. Ren was perhaps one of the strangest people Tristian had ever encountered, like what had to have happened in his life for him to just not emote and maybe not even feel. It was a kinda scary thought if he followed it too far. But something Tristian really wanted to know the real answer to. Though before that, he really just wanted to see Ren react like a normal human just once, just a smile or something.

When Ren turned away from the closed door, intending to go home, he saw Tristian looking right at him. For a second, his stone face cracked. A hint of panic and embarrassment he wasn't used to showed through. Normally he didn't care even if people saw him at a low point, but he felt low and having Tristian see it got to him. What should he say? He didn't know what to say at all. Smoothing his hands against his dark pants, he walked past the other man like he could pretend what didn't happen never did. "Good morning," he croaked. Even before the incident, he forgot about his meeting at work so he figured this would be the end of their interaction for the day. He could go home and erase all of this from his memory.

Tristian reached out and grabbed Ren's wrist, preventing him from walking away. "Don't you forget, we have a meeting today. And honestly, I don't want your face to swell, can't have one of my models faces getting swollen up because of something stupid." he looked over at Ren, not going to let him go, but also actually holding back the urge to ask, right away, what had happened, having seen the panic that was on Ren's face when he spotted Tristian. "So come on, we'll walk together. We can talk. You've got to meet the rest of the staff, so you really better get yourself ready. We should be early and hopefully your cheeks won't be red by then."

Ren froze at the feel of Tristian's touch. He turned, not quite meeting the man's eye. "What?" He forgot about the meeting and how he struggled with the realization. A second later, he dropped his eyes and pulled his hand away. "My face...is fine. This is normal," he murmured. He couldn't turn Tristian down though and just walk away so he nodded once, trailing behind him as the started walking again. "It's nothing to talk about..."

Tristian startled turning to stare at Ren, "How can something like that be normal?" he asked, concern lacing his tone, "That should not be any part of anybody's normal life. It's not right." he frowned, "That's not a long term girlfriend, right? Like" he paused, unsure how to phrase his next question, "You aren't getting beat up, are you?" he asked, just going for it, as was his usual, even though it could be a sensitive subject. And he seriously hoped Ren's answer was no because he didn't know what he'd do if the answer was yes. "Just, if you are, that's not okay and it needs to be stopped," he murmured.

Ren stopped and just stared for long enough that he realized he stopped breathing. Tristian so stunned him that he forgot basic body functions. "....What?" he breathed out finally, his voice gruff, but clearly stunned. His hand twitched at his side before he shoved it in his pocket because for some reason, his body wanted to express something though he didn't know what. He shook his head. "She's just some girl I met a couple days ago." Most people would assume she slapped him because he acted like an ass, so why did Tristian...? Did he somehow look that pathetic?

Tristian nodded, "Good, well, not good, but better. You just never know, too many people are hiding secrets like that. And I really wouldn't want you, or anyone in my employ, going through that, not when I could help. Or at least would try to help." Tristian said, his voice completely an utterly fair. "I'm just glad it's not that." He smiled up at Ren, not fully aware of just how much he'd unbalanced the other. "But getting slapped by girl's you just met isn't good either, Ren. Really getting slapped in anyway isn't good. You should try to avoid that."

Ren continued to stare for another few seconds before he got control of his motor functions again. Starting to walk, he broke eye contract for the first time in a while. This was just pointless kindness anyway, the sort you offered out of obligation, the sort of thing people always said without thinking about it. That's what he figured. Tristian really cared for his own benefit didn't he? "Don't worry. I won't create a scandal," Ren sighed. If he didn't, it shouldn't matter what he did.

Tristian sighed and rolled his eyes, "I don't care about that, not really." he grumbled, "I don't know you well, but I don't want you or anyone around me getting hurt. I don't like seeing it." He shook his head, "Also, it seems maybe whatever your doing to lead to getting slapped isn't the best life choice. It can be doing anything beneficial for you or your mental health."

For a long time, Ren didn't say anything. He didn't know if he believed Tristian or not, but maybe that wasn't the point. The man's words got to him either way. Finally, when he recognized the area near the studio, he responded to the words from minutes ago. "It was beneficial..." Maybe not in the way people tended to think, but he needed these kinds of things in his own strange way.

Tristian turned to stare at Ren, not fully comprehending how that could be beneficial, before shrugging, "Okay yeah, sure whatever to each their own and all that. But I seriously do mean what I said, do try to not get hit hard enough that your face is bruised. I don't care so much about scandal, but I do want everything looking one hundred percent right on the runway, and makeup can't always cover bruising." Tristian rambled, this time more out of a sense of discomfort, probably because the more he talked and interacted with Ren, the more confused he was by the other man. Usually, the opposite happened, but it seemed Ren really resisted comprehension. "Anyway, let's go on up," he said pointing to the building.

Ren nodded his head once, both to the request and the indication toward the stairs. He followed Tristian without a word though he felt more under control now. For the sake of his prized face--the thing that people cared about most--he'd try to do as Tristian wished now that he knew that to be the reason. It made sense and he liked things that made sense. Once inside, he paused to look around. "We're meeting...?" He found he still couldn't remember the purpose of coming today.

Tristian chuckled, "Oh dear, you're gonna end up more scatterbrained than me aren't you," he asked. "You are meeting the rest of my permanent staff, about ten to fifteen people, to start getting you settled in around here. And we are going to find you a makeup artist who will work with you most of the time." he said, smiling slightly. "It should be fun."

Ren frowned at the implication. He wasn't the least bit scatter-brained. He just didn't bother to commit the information to memory in the first place because he didn't care. Opening his mouth to say that would cause more problems though so he just nodded his head to say he understood. "Sure. It's just the usual things then. They here already?" he asked, his face and voice completely under control again and emotionless as ever.

"Not yet, unless they're early, Annette is probably here, I had her order sandwiches and stuff for a lunch type thing, and I'm sure she's trying to make my studio looks neat. She seems to take offense to the mess. No respect for the artistic process." he grinned at Ren, obviously teasing, "But she keeps me fed and makes sure I don't kill myself from exhaustion, so I guess I can't complain too much. Don't ever be fooled; she's the brains of this operation."

Ren took that in with a quiet stare. Anette sounded like a reasonable person. Well no, she sounded like the mom type. He didn't know how he felt about that, so he just wandered into the studio a step, not sure what to do. "Can I just sit down somewhere then?" He felt more like burying himself on his couch than meeting a whole bunch of people right now. The fight earlier had eased from his mind briefly, but it started to return now.

"Huh, oh yeah, just chill or whatever, I'm gonna go check on a few things, make sure Annette hasn't moved too much, you know, messed anything up I don't want messed with. People should starting getting here in the next fifteen minutes or so, so just breath until then." As he said that Tristian moved further back into his studio, calling out for Annette, who stuck her head out of what had pretty much been determined the lunch/break room. It was a space for eating, so no food would end up on any of Tristian's designs or fabric, something guaranteed to send him into a tizzy. He smiled, "Hey, you got everything ready?" he asked, "I ran into Ren, our new model, on my way over here, so I went ahead and brought him along. So hopefully this will all go well."

Ren nodded before moving to a chair he found off in another corner and sat, staring off at nothing. His face stung and he pressed the backs of his fingers against his cheek. He did something stupid again. Even though he said he didn't mind people seeing him with such a mark, or getting slapped in the first place, it was rather inconvenient. He didn't know how much it showed now. Ren hung his head, shoulders dropping toward the floor. And without a doubt, he'd do it all over again.

Annette, after finishing setting up the sandwiches. She walked over to Ren on the couch, giving him a kind smile, and holding out a hand for him shake "Hi, I'm Annette, you'll probably hear from me a lot in the future about things Tristian needs. But also know I'm here if he ever drives you to crazy. If you need me to shut him up, just let me know."

In the meantime, Tristian had wondered into the back of the studio, his mind racing with the events he'd just observed and the subsequent conversation he'd had with Ren. Ren's life just seemed to be more and more a mystery to him, and he really couldn't stop himself from wanting to know more, that itching curiosity always burning in the back of the mind. But the other was so reluctant to share, Tristian didn't know what to do. Most people usually enjoyed talking about themselves, at least to a point. But with Ren it's like he'd rather do anything but. Even further, it seemed he needed someone on his side more than anything, just to let himself enter into these ill advised relationships, in such a way that it was normal to him. Tristian couldn't imagine. It was horrifying in that it was so stunningly depressing to really think about why Ren could be okay with something like this.

Ren offered a faint smile to Annette before shaking her hand. "Kay." He glanced over to the studio where Tristian disappeared. He didn't think the man shared any details of what happened before and he felt thankful for that. Still, he didn't quite know how to deal with things right now. He wasn't used to feeling awkward, but Tristian kept turning things that way. He sighed, just wanting this entire day to be over already.

The silence felt a little heavy. He glanced up, realizing Annette was still in the room. She probably wasn't used to his silence, waited for more words perhaps. He scrambled for some and mumbled the quick question. "...Do you have any water?"
