*rolls back in*
It's kind of neat having a family with no many different heritages. In my family my siblings look like were from different backgrounds. I look like our Norse heritage, my brothers look German, my first sister looks half Portuguese , second sister English. No one thinks we're siblings to look at us, but we all have the same father. XD

As far back as we can trace my father's family was somewhat nomadic. Not Rom or anything, but travelling farmers. We were pretty mixed by the time we came to Canada, haha. I think the biggest problem with having so many lineages is that we don't observe any of the cultural traditions of any of them, so there isn't much of a sense of cultural identity.

@xuvrette - I wouldn't even know where to start doing something like that! Although, Canada does have it's traditions I guess. Like, celebrating the Queen's birth in May.

Originally it was Queen Victoria. Canadian's have been observing her birthday since 1845 (before Confederation!).
We use the date to celebrate whomever is the current Monarchy of Canada. Currently our Queen is Elizabeth II. Canada is actually a Commonwealth Realm, meaning that our true head of state is the Queen of England. She has a representative here, called the Governor General, who out ranks even the Prime Minister.
We're not really a true democracy the way the U.S.A is; our government is more alike to England's in that we mostly rule ourselves, but there are things only the Queen can decide. We're just lucky that Queen Elizabeth II is so chill, and lets us make our own decisions.

@xuvrette - Things like going to war, and extreme changes in laws. Generally if the Queen expresses disapproval over laws trying to be passed, and things like that they, don't go through. She isn't a dominant figure in day to day life, but she has a keen interest in all of her rule. She comes to Ottawa every few years to visit and talk-shop (so to speak) in person.

If I remember right only Hong Kong is considered a part of the Commonwealth. But, I don't know nearly as much about China's system of government as Canada's. ^__^;;

That's true. There are 54 sovereign states (but Fiji is currently suspended because of a military coup that took place in 2006). I think it's really interesting how all of these countries are connected because of the Commonwealth.

It's provides some perks while also providing some autonomy. A little something in the way of reparations, I suppose.

@xuvrette - Commodore Frank Bainimarama staged a military take over of Fiji in 2006, so Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth. They won't be let back in until they show significant progress toward democracy. That's what the newspapers say anyway. I don't really know a whole lot about this either. ^^;;
