How do you clean up lineart? The fact that I don't know how is really starting to get back at me. Any tips? Thanks in advance!

I mean like make the lines clearer and more crisp instead of all sketchy. Sorry I wasn't clear about that...

It depends a lot of people retrace it when the scan the sketch into photshop, but some people have naturally crisp line work and just use the setting on the scanner to make the lines darker. (I envy those people)

well the trick is to work little by little, and use zoom! zoom it very big :3 it's easier to work if it's big.

If you wanna try it with inking, try using thick lines in different places, like the outside of the clothes. I'd also recommend getting a micron pen. Probably size .03 or .01 for the thinner lines. If you still have grayish lines after erasing the pencil, you can always replace the color in photoshop.

Thank you. Where do you get the pen you mentioned from?

I make a new layer in Photoshop and then go over my lines with the pen tool. Nice, smooth, varied lines ^^

Generally, most artists carefully trace over a sketch to make it clean.

Well, I sketch my artwork and then re-trace the lines of the sketch with the pen tool. It gives me very nice vector-ish lines, even though I'm actually using photoshop, so it doesn't really count as a vector.. blah XD

When I do traditional artwork, I use Sakura Micron inking pens. They're each about 2.50 dollars where I buy them. They can be easily found at art supplies stores like Aaron's brothers and such. You could also google some art shops to see what comes up, though ^^

Lineart

When you size it back down, it 'gets rid of' little imperfections. You can make it more than 200%, but I always just do 200.

in photoshop, reinking it with the pen tool is the most time consuming way, but it provides the best results. if youre just doing rough work or the sketch is kind of clean, adjusting the brightness and contrast is the easiest. scanning it at a higher DPI and then resizing it will also help. i dont really like reinking, so usually i use the brush and eraser tools. for traditional media, you basically just have to ink. takes a while to fully learn how to ink really well though. i would recommend using sakura microns or copic mulitliners. multiliners are much more expensive though. microns are more affordable and easier to find. you can get at most art/craft stores like michaels of hobby town. and a good eraser. tracing paper is kind of a blah choice. if you have money, you could invest in a light box. basically its what the name implies. you plug it in, turn it on, put your sketch on it, put another piece of paper on it. light shines through so you can see through. trace and clean pencil lines. personally, i ink traditionally, then scan it, clean and then color. or print our the lineart and color traditionally. or i might skip the computer completely and just color with color pencils or copic markers.

I LOVE SAI PAINTOOL.
for me, the easiest way is to use my tablet and the ink pen tool. sometimes i'll use my mouse, but i really really really suck at using a mouse to draw. you can probably get an okay tablet for twenty dollars.

if you scroll down there is a section on using the pen tool for vectoring lineart.

Well, if you're using Photoshop and a mouse then I would suggest using the Brightness & Contrast settings and fixing it up a little. Then try out the Pen tool for making clean lines. It takes a little while to get used to, but if you try finding tutorials for using it. (DeviantArt might be a good place.)
