... Moonshine nudged her head gently into the girl's side. Looking back at her cow, the cow looked at her with a trusting gaze, murmuring, "It's okay, I'll be right beside you." The girl felt a little better, but a little disturbed that her cow spoke to her. She hadn't quite gotten used to it yet.
"Okay! Here is the sack that you two will be using." Alec clapped cheerfully, handing her a standard potato sack. How were the two of them going to fit into the tiny bag?
Just then, the bag started to move on it's own, and it slowly started to expand until it was big enough for a girl and her cow to hop in. The girl blinked in disbelief. This couldn't be happening right now, not to her...
"Go on, get inside!" Alec urged, motioning for them to hop into the bag. Both girl and cow stepped in at the same time, and were surprised to find inside...

it felt like sitting in an armchair. It was cushioned and form fitting to the two of them, and definitely large enough for a girl and cow to ride. The only difference was that beneath her their feet, petals sat. They felt spring loaded and when Moonshine pressed a hoof into the left most petal, the sack lurched forward and to the left. The girl let out a scream, but they landed upright and only a little disoriented.
"Try pressing the right one!" Alec yelled after them. The girl did and they lurched to the right.
Suddenly it all made sense. "Both together then!" Moonshine and the girl pressed the petals and...

... shot off into the maze at breakneck speed. They were frozen in fear as they sped through the maze, unable to lift their feet off the pedals and nearly destroying some of the obstacles Alec had set up. Suddenly, they felt like they were transported and Alec was standing in front of them again, shaking his head. "Well, that's one thing we need to take care of..."
"Is this like a go-kart or something?" The girl exhaled shakily, still trying to compose herself after that incident.
"A go-kart? I'm afraid I haven't heard of that before. Care to explain?"
"Well, it's like this potato sack, but it's for one person. And it has wheels that it sits on, and you steer around things with a steering wheel that turns the wheels in a certain direction."
"And this... go-kart contraption. Do you know how to drive it relatively well?" The girl nodded. Anything better than the two of them in charge of separate pedals.
Alec tapped his furry chin in thought."Hmm... though I can't really modify it exactly the way you describe, I do know there is a way that I can make the navigation easier for the both of your without breaking any of the rules. We just have to...

upload some magic codes into this little hole here." Alec indicated a small rectangular slot on the side of the sack and out of nowhere, produced a pink and purple sparkly stick which he inserted into the slot. A whir sounded along with a cute little ditty of a song. One minute later, he pulled out the stick and instantly the sack began to change around the girl and Moonshine. The pedals turned into those of a go-kart. The girl let out a grin.
"Now that's more like it!" She aimed the sack-kart toward the maze again and hit the gas. The first few obstacles she dodged easy, but then a...

... large looming shadow producing an eerie sound akin to a blood-curdling scream stopped them. Moonshine cowered in fear; she always had a fear of shadows. The girl gulped and creeped slowly towards the black mass when a large gust of wind swept the sack back so roughly that the two almost fell out of the sack. "Use your heads!" Alec called faintly from behind. Suddenly he appeared in front of them. For a strange reason, Alec's presence was oddly soothing for the both of them. "So this thing here," motioning towards the looming shadow, "is the Furtive Mystery. This thing here symbolizes the fears that we aren't consciously afraid of. You have to summon up a lot of courage to figure out how to get past this. Here's a catch though..."

If you're swallowed by your fears, you'll never be able to get out of the race. You'll forever be running through the nightmare over and over until Judgement comes." With that message done, Alec poofed away again. His voice echoed out even after he left their field of vision. "I know you can do it!"
The girl swallowed hard and patted Moonshine on the back. "Come on. We just have to fight back the shadows," she said with a little laugh. "Oh of course!" She exclaimed suddenly. "If it's fighting back shadows then all we need is...

... light! Here, I think I have something in my pocket..." She muttered, rummaging through the pockets of her coat before she felt the sleek feel of her flashlight. Pulling it out, she aimed it at the beast before turning it on, but it didn't help at all. In fact, the monster disappeared before it reappeared again, larger and louder this time. Its scream was so loud that the girl and Moonshine had to cover their ears. "Combating it with a temporary fix isn't going to make it better, it makes things worse!" They managed to hear Alec shout before the simulation died down a little. A little screen popped up on the dashboard in front of the steering wheel, Alec's face popping into view. "Temporary fixes can't make things go away. You must be able to internally get over your fear before you figure something out." He said before the dashboard turned black. The girl scratched her head. This was much harder than she had thought. Suddenly...

the shadow monster lunged forward. She squeezed her eyes shut a second before it crashed down on and consumed them. Everything turned back as if they existed inside of the monster. She could see only Moonshine. "Wh-what's this?" the girl asked. The shadow seemed to eat her voice so that it came out small. Alec could no longer reach them in this world, but at least they had each other. She needed to somehow overcome this fear? But it was so very scary and Moonshine was quivering with the fear. "It's alright," she said to her friend. Even though she was afraid, she knew Moonshine was even more afraid of the dark. It gave her a little courage to comfort someone so the girl patted the cow on the back. "We'll get through this. Let's just...keep walking. That's what you do in these situations, right?"
So they kept walking and...

...hit a wall. The wall wasn't there physically, but the girl felt the solidity of it when she ran into it. She poked the solid surface again and it felt cool, like water. Pressing a little harder she felt her hand burn a tiny bit. Yanking her hand back in pain, she hissed as she cradled her hand towards her body. She couldn't see anything in the dark, but she was pretty sure her hand had a serious burn on it. Moonshine was walking around aimlessly, bumping into walls all over the place. The girl squinted her eyes; something wasn't right. Was this... thing shrinking? She could tell Moonshine was inching closer and closer towards the girl in a way that was feeble, almost frightened. The girl herself was very frightened at the sight. She thought she heard something, and on closer inspection, she had found...

Some glowing cracks in the invisible. It took her a while to understand it. The pattern looked random at first, but she realized it only existed in a tiny portion of the space around her. By now, she could be sure that the space around her shrunk. "Come closer!" she called to Moonshine. If not for the shrinking space, then for comfort's sake. The girl felt herself get claustrophobic, something she herself feared like Moonshine feared the dark. Still, she forced herself to continue on. With her fingers trembling, she touched the cracks on the wall and realized it was something written there. "Wait! This is words? But I don't understand what it says!" Somehow, she understood that it was important though and the key to get out. A message or a puzzle? In order to get out of this trap, all she needed to do was...

... find the light from within herself. "Find the light within? What is that supposed to mean?" The girl sighed, scratching her head. She was a school student, but that didn't mean that she was the smartest when she came to riddles. Then, an idea occurred to her. "Hey, Moonshine!" The cow looked at her friend warily; Moonshine had learned from experience when the girl used that tone, something was bound to go wrong. "Try acting like you aren't scared of the dark." The cow looked at the girl incredulously and attempted to muster up enough courage to fool the monster into thinking she wasn't scared of the dark anymore. Just then...

a light exploded out of Moonshine. Silvery, blue, the light looked like the cow's namesake. It was so bright that it blinded the girl and she had to squeeze her eyes shut. The sound of breaking class exploded around her and when she blinked her eyes open again, they were on the race course again. "It worked!"
Alec's face appeared on the screen in front of them again, looking excited. "You've got the hang of it now! Good job you two. You've passed the first challenge, but you've lost a lot of time. Keep at it, and remember, the challenges will only get harder!" With that parting message, the two raced down the path that took a sharp right to...

... A fire-belching gorge. The girl though that the Furtive Shadow-thing was bad, this thing was probably worse. The flames weren't red-hot. Instead, they looked acid-green like the neon glowstick stuff that she would always crack open when she was bored. Alec's face popped up on the screen again. "So this one is, as you both could have probably figured out already, is the 'Acid-Fire Terror'. It's named that for a reason, so be careful when you cross this part of the race. Good luck, both of you!" His face flickered off the screen. "Well, that didn't help much..." The girl mumbled. Moonshine nodded in agreement; Alec wasn't the best help when it came to giving hints. But then again, it wasn't like he was going to be able to help them when the day came, anyways. Just then...

The ground they stood on started to inch forward, taking them along with it. At first they didn't notice because it moved at such a slow pace, but the girl came to realize that the gorge was getting closer. This obstacle definitely wasn't going to let her avoid it or take her time gathering her courage. "Oh no, moonshine! We have to find a way across this fast!" The closer they got to the edge though, the more she found herself unable to think. Just when they were a foot from the spewing acid flames, she spotted something overhead...

... like a net of some sort. Squinting her eyes, she could see the net falling from above. They both scrambled aside as the net fell near where they were standing with a heavy WHUMP! The girl was glad they weren't standing there; she didn't think she would've gotten out of the net. Either way, she was confused with the sudden net popping up out of nowhere. Suddenly, they could see Alec's head popping up on the screen. "Sometimes, things that might help you fall out of random places, like that net you just saw. It's up to you to figure out how to use them. And you might want to hurry up!" The screen returned to black, and the girl started to think before...

an idea hit her. A net could be like a bridge! A very unsavory sort of bridge, but she didn't know any other way to get across the chasm. "Quick, help me get this spread out!" she exclaimed to Moonshine. Of course the cow didn't have hands to grab it with, but they managed to get the net out and ready to throw before they reached the edge. The girl had tied some heavy rocks to the far ends and she threw the net out a foot from the flaming gorge. Doing everything in such a hurry gave her no time to be afraid. So with the heavy rocks weighing the net down on all sides, she started across the rickety structure and turned back to see...

... they had left the potato go-kart sack behind. The girl started to panic, and Moonshine, who had already reached the other side by jumping over the chasm, called out, "DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT, JUST GET OVER HERE!" The net bridge started to sway, but the girl kept on going and ignored the nauseous feeling bubbling up in her throat. Reaching the other side, she saw that the one side of the gorge that they were on was completely consumed by the green flames, the net bridge and all. Exhaling in relief, she was a little sad about loosing the vehicle, until...

the screen with Alec's face appeared out of nowhere, apparently not needing the sack-kart to function. "That was a very clever way of thinking, but unfortunately you would be disqualified. You just ALWAYS have your vehicle in this race! But never mind that since this is practice and you're making wonderful progress. Just continue on and remember the rule for the future." With that, the kart appeared around the screen and the girl and Moonshine hopped in.
"We're really doing good?" she asked the cow. It didn't feel like it, but they'd already started traveling down the path again so maybe it wasn't the best time to think about it. But maybe she should have asked what the other rules were? Just as she opened his mouth to question that, a...

... large boulder seemed to have dropped in the middle of the road they were riding on. The girl quickly slammed on the brakes, nearly throwing her and Moonshine out of the sack. The rock uncurled and revealed itself to be a troll. The short, rock shaped creature grinned at the pair and gave a little wave. "Why hello there! My name is Thunk. I'm a traveling boulder and I have a wide selection of wares to sell. Everything from sleeping potions, jewels, weapons, and a bed to sleep on. Care to take a whirl at any of this?" the troll asked.
Moonshine and the girl traded looks. They didn't think it would be troublesome to stop here and buy a few things, but...

... Alec's face popped up on the screen again. "Be careful when things like this pop up. This is the Irresistible Charmer. He goes by many names, but you have to be wary of him. He may or may not mean any harm to you both!" He said, and his face fizzled out to black again. With this new knowledge, the girl was much more wary about the troll and what he had to sell. She had an awful pun stuck in her head, but she kept it in. "I don't think we should trust him, Moonshine..." But the cow mooed softly, "I'm a little hungry though." Just then...

a great feast hall appeared around them. Thunk transformed into an elegant butler with long hair tied at the nape of his nape and a smile on his face. "Please, the meal is free this time. Enjoy yourselves. I know, you are very hungry." With a gesture of his hand, two chair pulled out from the table. He had the most charming smile that Moonshine couldn't resist. She sat down first and though the girl hesitated, she followed her friend to the table. The sight of the food made her hungry too and she would never want to leave the cow's side. "Well...it couldn't hurt to eat a little..." The two started to eat and...

... just like the storybooks, they shrank to the size of the green peas on their plates. The girl started to feel a little queasy, but she noticed a shadow looming over their plate, and it was Thunk. Instead of the charming butler, though, he had transformed into a drooling beast, eyeing the two of them especially hungrily. "Well drat." Moonshine groaned. The girl glared at her friend; this wouldn't have happened if she wasn't so charmed by Thunk's smile. She heard the clinking of utensils and knew they were both done for when...

"Get in the spoon!" she called to Moonshine and the two jumped into the scoop at the girl grabbed a piece of food and dropped it on the spoon end that hung out in the air. With a spring, the two went flying up onto the windowsill over the hungry Thunk's head. They may have still been small, but the window was open and she jumped out through it. ... a boat that was floating along a quiet stream. The boat looked like something from a fairy tale; a green leaf with two curled up stems as oars. There were small fireflies that were lighting the way since it was dark when they landed, and there were sounds of soft cooing as the cool night started to settle. But it couldn't have been this perfect; the girl felt that there was something off about the setting. Moonshine, on the other hand, was perfectly content with having a place to relax, and she made herself comfortable on the boat. The girl shook her friend awake. "Not now, Moonshine. We need to get out of here." She got up, grumpy that she didn't get the time to sleep. All of a sudden...
