What do you think of using porn sites as models for drawing?.
I mentioned to another artist that I sometimes draw nude female chars, however I have great difficulty with nude male chars as I have less reference to go by. To be honest I own a female body so I have a good idea what a nude female looks like....Male body not so much. Their suggestion was that I start looking at porn.

I have thought about it and hesitated for a long time.Like some, I have mixed feelings about pornography.
As of yesterday, I have turned to porn for a certain piece I'm working on. It does feels a bit odd...I'm not the type who is into porn otherwise. I did a search and I was able to find some posing nudes.

Now to be precise, I am not drawing porn. I am simply using the useful nude people as models.
Nudes just make good models and where can you find the most nudes?..why in porn sites in abundance.
For me drawing nudes is part of my drawing style. Usually they are used as a baseline type drawing and then I edit clothing onto them. This usually results in a higher quality drawing then if I drew them with clothing on to begin with.

It can be a good resource, though I find that stock photography is better for my tastes. ^^

I've got a friend in one of my classes that suggests going to porn for reference. That's... not within my standards. I'd rather have a clothed figure, or even find the pose drawn by a different artist. I'm sure it can be really helpful but I couldn't bring myself to look up pictures like that.

There's a huge difference between porn and nude modeling. You can find people who will model nude, it's just harder. Especially finding male models.

Porn, it's useless. The bodies are generally photoshopped, to look unrealistic. They don't have many useful poses. It's generally pretty sick to look at, too, from what I've seen from trolls.

There are places with pictures specifically for art, so that you don't have to use something like porn. I think there's even a huge thread with links, on ConceptArt.

Have ya considered checking out your local parks and recreation group or jr. college to see if they offer live modeling? Many schools will offer live modeling for a fee (which often goes to the model). Drawing from a live model is actually better than going from a photo. Something about photography looses a bit in the 3D quality (or at least that is what my teachers would preach to me...over and over to the point of redundancy). The one drawback I had in my experience with live models, is that my school was cheap and so...my art models were either REALLY old men, or really hairy women. Thankfully editing the hair was easy...Wrinkles tho were harder. Still it was a fun experience. I would also recommend studying the anatomy. Knowing exactly where the bones and muscles go will really help you to avoid that joint that just doesn't look quite right. Goodluck!

Thanks, I have an extensive background in anatomy and it hasn't helped as much as some claim it does.
As for classes, I need to keep it simple for now. Maybe that can be considered later on. Thing is I want to avoid having my cartoons turned out looking realistic.
I did not look for porn for the poses, which I did not even use. I simply used them for the nude body form.
Like I said I very rarely keep my figures nude, I tend to draw them nude for quality purposes and then put clothing on them/.

Honestly I don't think you need the porn sites for drawing nude figures. There are an abundance of sites that are more geared to artists over you run of the mill porn site. These art sites often have models in complicated poses and/or multiple angles. The other advantage too is the image quality will be much better and often times larger. The advantage too if using a art site is less awkward questions. If you really want a handy tool try a 3D poser program. I know a fair number of people that turn to that over using nude photos.

Anatomy is all fine and dandy, it is proportion that tends to kill most people. If you are looking to work on that then you might want to look at drawing books or if you have a good enough image measure out the proportions to see how it all works. (IE legs and arms about the same. In the 7-8 head range.)

Life drawing class, plain and simple. Learn anatomy. From your other topic, you seemed hostile toward learning the basics of the human body. I'd suggest you look into it, if you are at all serious about your work.

Huh?...Are you mixing me up with someone else and or addressing someone else?...
Or did you not see that I already have a background in anatomy and specialize in drawing people/figures?.
I have no idea what you are talking about concerning being hostile about the basics of people bodies.
This is part of my speciality, so why would I be hostile towards something I spent years working on?. You make no sense at all.

kerryfox, I do have poser...I love it for pose ideas...Problem is it runs awfully slow on my computer:(...
3-D poser sounds great, though I bet it's work like a snail here. Pokey, pokey slow...

That thread wasn't about my type of artwork, it was a general comment about artwork.

*shrugs* I understand some concepts may be too advanced for newbie artists.
I mean that topic contains nothing about the basics of drawing people, it's about abstract style cartoons/

I myself agree with you.

Whenever I draw something, I tend to draw the naked base first so that I know all the proportions are right, then add things like a face, hair, and lastly clothes and accesories.

If you don't start with a good base, then the things you put on it won't be good either, and there isn't a better example for body shapes then naked people which can be found in porn.

Of course, there are people that go "OMG! NO! PORN! EEEEWWWLLLL!!!!" but those are the people that will never have a good reference for bodies since now and then every nude model seems to be labeled porn v.v;;;

Hmm, I suggest you use more realistic models, since many porn stars have gotten breast and butt implants, so that skews their proportions a lot.

There's always more natural nudes out there - just look at dA Artistic Nudity photos and such.

Although, many users take advantage of that category and use it to post porn-y pictures of themselves. x_x'

I think I will take your suggestion and someone else's on that...Never heard of butt implants...I do agree that could throw off regular person type drawing. Unless one is looking for that kind of look in their people.

Instead of using porn, I'd recommend looking through deviantart at the artistic nudes. I've tried the whole 'porn for modeling' thing and it just makes me feel sick because I can't really ever find anything that isn't too sexual.

I've found many tame artistic male nudes on deviantart. Ones that don't cause arousal or anything, ones simply for reference. You can also look through their reference section under anatomy. For the most part, deviantart keeps their male selection pretty clean. It's harder for them to keep their female section clean, though, as it's always being flooded with nasty images. >.<;;

I do that all of the time. There are some positions that you cannot find people in except for porn.

I do not suggest deviantart, but rather search for some nude model sites. There are quite a few with women on them so there has to be one with men on them.

I haven't used posemaniacs yet, but I'm sure it'll be very useful when I do. I'm not against porn or referencing from porn, but then again, that's very reliant on maturity level/religion/whatever. Personally, I think that if it works for you, go for it; no need to be ashamed or anything silly. Other than that, posemaniacs + any stock photography you can find.

As far as the knowing anatomy for highly stylized drawings thing goes.. Look, stylized drawings are great. They can be very fun and uniquely interesting. However, in my opinion at least, STRONG stylized drawings require a firm grasp on anatomy more than most other options! In order for the viewer to realize that a series of highly unrealistic body shapes is "BELIEVABLE" and not only acceptable but *favorable*; well, that usually requires a very strong knowledge of anatomy.

At least in my eyes. Imagine a poorly drawn realistic portrait. Now, imagine a poorly drawn anime portrait. At least from what I've seen, generally the subpar realistic drawing of a cutie will wipe the floor with the freaky triangle eyed alien creature. It's all about making your art believable..

I think if it works for you it's fine, I think if looked up nude men/male models instead of porn it maybe less, um, interesting, lol. I often use the internet and fashion magazines for poses and inspiration. Hell, go into any abercrombie and fitch store and you'll see giant pictures of mostly naked men.

It could definitely work. I don't do it, but it could work if you're interested in that sort of thing. (More sexual nude poses than not.) I'd rather check artistic sites.

There are art books with that sort of thing, too--but they're really expensive. If you think it's worth it, go ahead.... I've seen some in Barnes/Noble stores.

Maybe you could ask a friend to model for you? Problem is that it's awkward to phrase.

There is a huge diffrence between nude modeling If there is not someone that you can have model for you and you want to get better with the male proportions i feel that its fine to look at it. personally i hate porn i feel if someone has another in there lifes they should not have a use for it you really have to choose carefully of which pictures you use for your drawing though most porn is going to be things that are trying to turn the people on so they can play with themselfs and get off. in honesty its all about how you want to go about it if you are unconfortable with it then dont do it there are teachers that are great with it i have one at my school i sugest talking with the one of your art teachers and see if they can help you.

if you dont want to type in porn and search it search figure drawing, or nude models. you are most likely to find things that are less.. i dont know what to call it i supose intresting would fit?

I took a figure drawing class with nude models a few classes actually. and the one day that i missed was when a long haired male model was in class. it was quite upsetting since i as well am not that great at drawing the male body.

Do you have a boyfriend? if you are close to him you could always ask him to model for you im actually thinking about doing the same in the near future. I need to get back into drawing
