So yeah. The name's Lexi. I'm 18 & starting my BA Psychology this year. :D I love video games, reading, music, and philosophy. Some favourites that come to mind are: Eternal Sonata [video game], Disgaea [video game], Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced [video game... obviously. XD], Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Anne Bishop's Dark Jewels Trilogy, Metric [a band], HIM [a band], and existentialism -- I can't go too specific for that, cause I'm still researching it. ^__^
Anywho, I hope that's a sufficient introduction... If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask. :)
I hope to meet some interesting people here! :)

On a side note, poor Heathcliff he really did deserve better than Cathy.

Hello Lexi! My name's Crash. I'm 24 and temporarily derailed on my Computer Science degree. I love video games, reading, music, and photography. Some favorites that come to mind are: Chrono Trigger [video game], Earth Bound [video game], Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced [video game... obviously. XD], Uncharted Waters: New Horizon [video game; bonus points if you actually know of it], A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy O'Toole, The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, The Spencer Davis Group [a band], and Screeching Weasel [a band].
Anywho, I hope that my slightly edited version of your introduction is enough. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask.
I hope you meet some interesting people here!

Cool! :) I doesn't look like the forum system will be too difficult to figure out, which is good. I was really hoping it wouldn't be - some places I've gone to are irritatingly complex for no apparent reason. XD
And thanks haha :) I think it's the hair option #3 or 4... something near the beginning. I liked it cause it's kinda princess-y.

Thanks! :)
& I think they both deserved better. They really weren't good for each other -- Cathy's sick situation was only aggravated by his constant fauning (sp?), which made her die... but then again Cathy was a bit of a brat and expected waaaaay too much of poor Heathcliff, who didn't have the chance to really know any of the more genteel mannerisms. Which was too bad, cause I was kinda rooting for them... XD

Haha nice editing of my intro, there. XD
It's nice to meet you ^___^ Does your interest in photography extend to actually taking any, or do you just admire it? I ask because I'm more of the latter -- my photo-taking skills aren't the greatest. I leave that to my dad, who sells his photos professionally. :P
Oooooo I love Chrono Trigger! :) Do you have the original or the one for the playstation? [or PS2? I forget - they seem so similar.]
& sorry, I'm gonna have to opt out on those bonus points. Haha - I'm not gonna cheat and just google it. >__>

Ooh, a Dark Jewels Trilogy fan! I just got finished rereading the first three and now I'm in the middle of Dreams Made Flesh again. I just love that series to pieces.
Also, yay for a FFTA fan! Do you have Grimoire of the Rift yet? I started it a few weeks ago and I don't find it to be as much fun as the first one.

I always thought Cathy was a bit of a slut to be honest. She spoke a pretty turn, but in the end all she wanted was to have everything. My favorite quote from that book is when she describes her love. But really all she's saying is that she doesn't really love Linton, it's a feeling that she knows will wither and die, but Heathcliff is someone she loves, and not in the romantic sense, but in the very raw pit of her heart. A love that is neither healthy nor kind but strong and encompassing. And yet she still chooses Linton over Heathcliff, I suspect, because Linton's loaded.
Quote:
|
“My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods; time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath--a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind--not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being”.
|
I enjoyed Joseph the most out of the entire set of characters. For no other reason than his accent! It's great! I had to read Joseph every time in class because no one else could understand it, which I thought was odd because I'm from Yorkshire, my entire class was. But he was just so much fun to read aloud.
Yeah, I had to read this book at college so I disect passages and read too deep into them :P "There is no right or wrong in interpretation, only what is possible and what is not"
Yeah sorry, this detracts away from hello and welcome to the site, but I've never found someone else, except my english teacher, who likes wuthering heights.

Dark Jewels is, like, life. Hahaha I just finished re-reading Dreams Made Flesh after having re-read the entire series again. I'm hoping to read the newest one, "Tangled Webs", soon. It's supposed to be more about Surreal and stuff. :)
I haven't had a chance to get it yet, but I like the look of the graphics. Is it worth the buy?

Hm... I haven't studied the book in a while - it's been about 2 years or so. I studied it in grade ten, and only one other person in my class even liked the book. Everyone else just studied it grudgingly.... It's nice to see that someone else likes it. :D There's a book out by another author, who speculates about what Heathcliff did during those years that he went missing. It was titled something along the lines of "The Return of Heathcliff", but I'm not completely sure. The style is similar and, well, I got hooked cause I loved Wuthering Heights. XD

I borrowed Tangled Webs from a friend and read it in about a day. It's MUCH more centered around Surreal, although Jaenelle and the males in her life do make appearances. I'm glad I read it and I'll be happy to buy it when it comes out in a cheaper paperback, but I'm happy to pass on the hardcover version for now. Try to borrow it from the library first to see if you like it - I enjoyed it but I don't feel it's *quite* as great as the other books in the series.
It's also got a mini Surreal story in the back. I guess it was first released in some sort of anthology that's out of print now, so she stuffed it in the back of Tangled Webs so more people would have access to it.

It wasn't so much the story that I liked, as my favorite character is Joseph. Heathcliff was the one I liked the most out of the main ones, but I was never really into them all that much. What I did like was Emily Bronte? It was Emily wasn't it? Her skill is simply amazing! I love the way she writes because even though the story and characters weren't particulary appealing to me I still loved the book.
She has this way of literally painting with words. But Have you ever played those find games? Where there's a picture and a list of things to find in it. And like a swan will be part of the wall papers pattern? That's the kind of painting she does. At first glance it seems relatively nromal if somewhat cluttered, but if you look closely so many subtleties jump out at you. And what at first seemed like a straightforwards story is suddenly laced with all these other intricacies that draw you in. Even if it's something as subtle as the way they talk about each other. At first glance it does appear that they're in love and destined to be together, but then when you read into the words themselves so much more is visible. It's one of those books I could re-read again and again.

Yeah, my Mom bought it, actually, and I'm gonna read it once I get through my current pile hahaha. I'm currently rereading another book, but I'll be finished it soon since I pretty much devour books. ^__^ I'm excited to read Tangled Webs though! Also excited for the next book coming out next year. I forget the title at the moment, though...

In response to Jayms:
It's funny, because throughout the book I went through various stages of hating and liking Heathcliff. Like, he'd be just plain vicious in the way he spoke, and since it was at the point where the reader didn't know why he acted the way he did, I was very irritated by it and decided that he wasn't so likeable a character. But then it would transition to when he was so happy and nice with Cathy and I'd reconsider for a bit... but yeah, by the conclusion of the novel, I was feeling quite sorry for him. He'd been through a LOT.
Yes, I loved Emily Bronte's writing style as well. It was very vivid and I never found myself lacking a visual representation of what was happening. You just sort of... fall into her world. At least, that's how I felt. I guess that's one of the reasons why I liked it so much - it just seemed so real, as if you could touch it.
It's looking like I really, REALLY need to re-read Wuthering Heights. It's been too long. Way too long. I need to go pick up my own copy. XD I'd love to take a look at it again and see if I can spot those intracacies that you're mentioning because I'm sure I didn't see them when I read it before.

You could have just not spotted them because you didn't go into as much as we did. Grade ten is highschool and I studied it in college. Not to mention that where you live plays a role in what level of education you get. For example American students are learning two to three years below what their English counterparts are. (As proven by the American exchanges in our schools as well as that my sister is American.) So there's a lot of reasons why you may not have spotted them.
Yeah, there are a few writers who just suck you in with their writing styles and Emily is just one of them. Shes very good, I keep meaning to pick up another book by her, but I just haven't had the time!
I still have my book, it's in such a state. There must be at least five different coloured highlighters which cover anywhere from one word to entire passages! Then I have a red pen, pencil and black pen underlining bits here and there. And if there was space in the margins I filled it with notes. I even had to write notes all over the front and back pages. Reading my copy is really confusing. And it makes me really sad. I hate defacing books!

I live in Ontario, Canada. Not sure where that puts me haha but I think it's decent enough education. ^__^ [Plus, I was in an enriched program... not sure if you've heard of it, but I was in the IB program...] Where did you go to school?
And even if we didn't go into as much detail, I still like delving into the depths of books. So now I've gotta go re-read it to get to understand it better. I find that you can get so much more out of a book by understanding it better like that. For example, this past year I really studied A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess for my English summative and I really grew an appreciation for it. Upon first glance, it was an okay book... but once I really got into studying the themes and read a few literary criticisms, I really got into it. [I'd go on, but I'm not sure if you've read it or not.]
Awww that's terrible. >__< I hate writing in books too. Usually if I'm studying stuff, I'll write down relevant stuff on a piece of paper, citing paragraphs and page numbers because I'm too chicken to actually write in my book. It's like, taboo or something. It just feels wrong. XD Only annoying thing is that I'm a lot slower than my classmates because of it. XD

I don't know where it puts anyone, but it could be why your class didn't go into it as deeply as we did. I'm British. I went to highschool in Stocksbridge and went to Barnsley college (Not exactly the best college out there by any means, but bloody good fun).
Clockwork orange....hehe that got made into a film and banned! So of course I know it. I have an addiction to banned movies. I've never read the book though, once I've seen the movies I can't read the books, unless I've read the books first. That was a very warped story! But it was really rather good. I imagine the book must be a really interesting read, I know the film was rather interesting and made you think about things as well as making you really uncomfortable. Genius.
Well in my open book exams I could take my books in but not extra sheets of paper. So I really did need to make my notes in the book. Also for the closed book classes I still needed to write in the book because the class wouldn't slow down for me to write it out. So if I tryed (and I did once) I'd get really left behind. If I did it for more than the first half of a lesson I'd be so far behind I don't know if I could have followed it. That class moved along really fast. It's the same story with one of my favourite books (which someone borrowed off of me and I haven't got back). All my college books are well noted.

In response to Jayms:
That's neat :) I don't know much about British colleges [or British things in general, really, aside from having visited England once and having read Harry Potter ;)]... so I'll have to take your word for it that it was good. And hey, it's all about having fun while getting a good education, right?
I've actually never seen the film, though you think I would have as a way of cheating my way through reading it, eh? Haha but yeah, the book is actually quite an interesting read. It's written entirely in Nasdat, the slang that Alex uses with his, er, compatriots and whatnot.... which at first makes it very hard to read and understand completely. But eventually, the words just rattle around in your head long enough that you really begin piecing together what it all means through context. After a while, you barely realize you're not reading actual English anymore but a language made up by Burgess! And yes, it definitely addresses some things that are unpleasant, but it brings up many things to think about as well, just like you said. The whole issue of a synthetic sort of existance because of the brainwashing of Ludovico's Technique. [It's terrible - just a case of simple Pavlovian conditioning held in the wrong hands.]
Well then in the case of your exams, writing in your books certainly was a good idea! ^__^ Also, it seems the same for your classes as well. I'd do well to remember that when I start my first semester this fall! XD I certainly don't want to be falling behind...
In response to Black Rat:
Thank you! :) And me too. When I was reading the book, I found that part so intriguingly sad and meaningful that I just had to write it down. It's in a .txt file on my desktop, actually. Hahaha. XD

Harry potter irritates me somewhat. It's written as though by an American who's been to London once or twice. And the actual writing itself is so simple it would fail my highschools standards, let alone my colleges. It's a good story but she is such a bad writer.
Hehe eggywegs is so completely a real word! ... When talking to a three year old. Which in itself is a very clever device. From the way he and his droogs talk you would assume that they're little kids, if you knew nothing else about them. And then you mix it with gang rapes and the effect is more disturbing than if they spoke in actual English. It does play with your mind, especially in book format I would imagine. I mean the film was narrated in that language and that messed with me. I could hear someone talking as though they were/were talking to a three year old. And as such the rapes and murders and attacks just shock you all the more.
If you're really worried about writing in books I'd recomend using a pencil at first, you can rub it out so it's less defacing...but then you just get used to it and take notes properly without worrying...the disgust kicks in after you leave and you have an amazing book you've defaced. Or on the other end of the scale... I read a horrible book which I hated! And youknow how I've written all over it...I now wonder if setting it alight would be too much more of a defacement....

Hahaha I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so! The last chapter in the last book actually made me do a double-take. It was not only badly written, but it seemed way too rushed. Oh, and any kid named Albus Severus is gonna get picked on. You just know it.
For sure. Also, some of the words are based on Russian words, I believe, and anglicized when the word is sometimes more difficult to pronounce. For example, "droogs" means "friends", and "horrorshow" comes from "khorosho" [or something spelled like that] which means "good". It's interesting watching Burgess play with language... Oh, and apparently he hated the film. XD That`s not gonna stop me from renting it sometime, though.
Hmm... that's something I'll have to consider. Pencil doesn't sound nearly so bad as bright highlighting and pen markings... Thanks for the tip. :) ^__^

Oh I read the first book and wanted to take out the red pen and mark it! I really did! I resisted the urge. My harry potter books are still un marked...for now. That last chapter should just have never been published! It's...shocking. I seriously think I was writing better quality when I was ten. I'm not sure what possessed her, the already terrible grammar became so bad my eyes almost began bleeding! I mean she has a great imagination and afterall the book was supposed to be aimed at children (although who aims something that long at children since the 40's?), so fair enough for the rest of her books. But that chapter? If I were her publicist I would have said no. Also did you notice how book 1 had the best grammar of them all, and every subsequent book got worse and worse till the climax of that chapter!
It is interesting. I would like to meet him, I really would, if he's still alive. I love words and playing around with them and languages. It's really interesting and I liked that someone managed to play around with it and still write a book that made sense. If I tried doing it I'd cock it up. In every way.
I don't blame him, most films are nothing like the books and the films from that era are notoriously bad. But it's still a good film. The book is at least 10 times better though and I've not even read it. But that's just the way it is. That's the time period it was made in.
You're welcome ^_^ I'm happy to share tips with someone else who loves books. I've not had such a great conversation about books in general in a long time!
