How do you know when they have soft shell? Is there an announcement somewhere?

You hide them for part of a day. If a hatchings sick you hide them as well. Go to your scroll to actions and hit hide on the one that has a soft shell sometimes they are soft when you adopt them so its good to check. It will be fine though just hide it.

Yep if you look at my scroll right now you will see I have one hidden it cannot get clciks or views when this is done. This way the shell can harden back up or the hatchling get better.

It tells you on the description. Click "View" when you are on your account page and if it has soft shell, it will be below the age description.
Same thing for hatchling sickness, which is the equivalent of soft shell, except it's hatchlings.

Yep and someone made my new eggs soft yesterday so I hid them over night, they were fine this morning.

Heheh, dragons are everywhere these days, and I'm one of the worst, I think. I have four hatchlings and two eggs at the moment.

look, Agent of Chaos hatched finally and soon Gotham's Hero will be hatched as well.
