The good thing about item creation contests is that art skills are not solely required for your entry to be good (although clear graphics help). It's also the idea of your suggestions. So I'd say so long as you have good descriptive skills and rough references, those would be okay. :)

ah that makes sense... maybe i'll see if i can think of anything then, if that time comes :D
