Always try to. I'm human and mess up. Let my impulsive nature sometimes blind me to when others need someone to be there. But darn it I sure try darlings.

I have this pet peeve... can sum it up in one word. Time.

In college, there was someone next door in the dorm. She would have friends over every now and then and they were always so loud. One week, there was a lot of doors slamming up and down the hall after 11pm. I was trying to sleep and it wasn't working. Then her friends came and she had a doorbell that they used over and over. I was so angry. I posted on facebook that I wished people would be quiet at night, especially those with doorbells. She wasn't my friend on facebook, but evidently a friend of hers was. She is the only one in the dorm with a doorbell... so she found out about my post. It angered her. Learned later that the reason that night that they were noisy was her mom had just passed away and her friends were trying to cheer her up. I'm sorry, but other's life events trumps a simple pet peeve anyday.

So if I am being unfair, call me out on it and then say you still like me... I'll cool it.

I personally feel that even if you're having troubles in your own life, it doesn't make it fair to cause troubles in other people's lives. I have a major problem with people that can't respect noise boundaries. I don't care how awful of a time I'm having, how depressed I am, or if I have friends over, I make sure that I am always respectful to my roommates and that my friends are, too. And I consider the same for my dorm neighbors. I have no right to disturb their lives and sleep, because I know everyone has their own troubles to deal with.

You had every right to be annoyed about that, because that was really rude. They could cheer her up without waking up everyone else in the surrounding area.

It would have been nice if everyone had your attitude. I apologized to her and we left as friends.

Unfortunately most people don't care. Thankfully my roommates usually pass out early on weekdays, so that's not really a problem. But they're up late on weekends. But when they're in the house, they're usually not loud past a certain time, except for one who just doesn't know how to respect everyone else in any sense, really. But the real noise problem is all our neighbors and people outside. You can hear people out the window until at least 1am all the time.

wow, that would drive me nuts... I'm a fan of sleeping early

I can't sleep early, but I be sure to keep quiet for those trying to sleep. I'm usually up to midnight at a minimum, but I like it to be quiet when I sleep, so I give the same courtesy to my roommates. I would be very unhappy if they were being loud while I was trying to sleep. If it's past 10pm, then I'm super quiet.

I wish that I had had you as a neighbor.

I had the unfortunance of my family being really disrespectful to me when I had to sleep. I'd need to be up at 5am every weekday morning, and they'd be up until sometimes 2am in the living room right next to my bedroom being suuuper loud. It always really bothered me, and I don't want to cause that to anybody else.

lol You sound like a good neighbor, too. The guys across our hall are great, but the people on the second and first floor can be so loud and you can hear the running around and doors slamming all the time.

Maybe you could return the favor... at 5 or 6am???

No, because I won't stoop to their level. It was usually my brother and his ex-girlfriend, and my mom wanted her to like her so she would tell me to stop complaining and let them be as loud as they wanted. It was seriously rude, but even though it drove me nuts, I still wouldn't do that to them.
