I'm not sure when I first learned of hippocamps, but they're around. The book series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, has them too.

I've seen them a lot when I was growing up... I feel pretty sure there was some cartoon with mermaids that had a hippocamp steed.... But I know I've seen them due to all the fountains in Europe that depict King Triton or Neptune or Poseidon.

Being a rather huge mythology buff I was exposed to them early and I was personally confused when they came up in discussion for that particular Contribution Item set and only a few people knew what was being talked about. >_>

I was like, "for realz?"

But I think it has to do with focus of interest and every-day exposure. XD Not out of any, "omg, where have you been under a rock???"

I mean, if someone was like, "what's a vampire" or "what's an angel" or "what's a green-skinned alien?" I'd be like, "where on earth were you raised and have you ever turned on the television? Those things are in commercials for crying out loud!"

But you don't typically see a hippocamp unless you do a lot of digging around in bestiaries, mythology, history, or "old world" architecture. XD All of which I do.
