Alright, here's my first finished attempt. I was hoping to get some feedback on it.

I chose bright, primary-like colors since they just really capture childhood. There's a big, silly hat, but most of the pieces are very basic and, to me, seem like something potatoheads would be given, if they could wear clothes. And the silly shirt layering just seems like something a kid would do to their toy! Who didn't dress their dolls up unconventionally? The big hoops are, of course, because Mrs. Potatohead had them!
The mismatched eyes represent how silly you could get with potatoheads. While I don't think you could ever mismatch eyes like that, you could make all sorts of silly, mismatched looks.
And finally, the bunny is to symbolize how you play with the toys. When playing with toys, you rarely played with only "compatible" toys at a time. Sometimes you'd have a small stuffed animal be Barbie's (disproportionate) pet, or a hot wheels car would be Polly Pocket's ride. So here the bunny is being played with as if it belonged to the potatohead.
I know I have no yellow at the bottom (aside from that tiny clasp on the purse), so I'm open to suggestions. But I don't think it can really be changed and still retain the simplistic look.

EDIT: I threw on a red rose hairpin to try to get some red up top, but it just doesn't fit the theme well as you can see:

It's not 100% perfectly balanced, but I think it fits the theme well while still being pretty well balanced, considering the limitations.
If anyone can think of a more appropriate red hairpin, do let me know. I don't have many red items.

Personally, I'd send it in if I were you. I love your description too. And you don't need yellow on the bottom [especially since most kids don't know about matching or color balance ...or care for that matter anyway].
I adore it. The big chunks of color really seem like the pieces you'd put on a potato head too. I don't see the eccentric character that most people were going for, but I think you really captured the essence of a child's playtoy in taking a different approach.

I really like your avatar, Cherry. XD

I've scrolled through so many pages trying to catch up and yours is one of the Potatohead avatars I like most. :3

I have to agree with Sizzla on my interpretation of the challenge: simple avatars with less detail and more solid areas of colors, rich/saturated primary and secondary colors (primary especially) and/or pink. Silly hats and silly handhelds (purses count as 'silly' 8D).

I'm not saying I'd discriminate against a good brown avatar, but the way I read the challenge, I'm looking for something that is less "interpretation of the essence of a potato" and more "a potatohead person".

Think of South Park, even, and how they simplify their characters.

Thanks, Donna and CK!
I'll probably end up sending it in as-is, but I'm going to wait a little bit in case I get some sudden inspiration or someone can come up with a good suggestion. :)

Winter - Looks good! The hat reminds me of Mrs. Potatohead's hat. :)
It does seem a little bit "grown up" though. I mean, beyond the fact that Mrs. Potatohead is supposed to be an adult, I just mean that it almost seems too stylish for a kid's toy. Maybe take the gold out? That's pretty sophisticated.

So far looking through the entries I've seen alot of good ones. I think Pixore and Cherry captured the "Potato head" feel the best though ^.^

I like how Donna put it.
Kids dont care about matching. They just put things together, and those things do tend to be very bright and the basic plain colors (red, blue, green, yellow)

So yeah, i'd have to say that I think Cherry has captured it the best so far.

as much as it goes against everything I try to do when making an avatar, I think for this challenge everyone needs to try and simplify their layers.

I'm seeing some really good interpretations but a lot of them just seem to be cramming too many colours in and then using too many layers to try and balance it, it doesn't really fit with my idea of mr/mrs potato head. As far as this challenge goes, I feel like lots of bright colours is good, but the layers have to be simple and the items need to be gaudy to really capture the potato head style

*throws in my two cents and runs away*
man this thread is moving fast!
I'm sure it didn't move this fast last cycle xD
anyway, sorry I haven't been around to give advice, you all need to stop posting so much when I'm asleep! xD

Well, right now there are more people.
As the last cycle went on, more people were eliminated, and most people don't stick around much once they're out. But now we've got ALL the contestants and ALL the judges, and that adds up to a fair amount of people to post.
Plus, we're all excited about the new cycle, I think. :D

Wow, 7 pages of catch-ups, but its cool. I'm used to doing that with User's Pick and not PM, but okay xD

I'm liking how you guys are all interpreting this challenge. Some of you have more of what I was hoping for than others, but its okay because I think you all have a really good idea of what you're doing and it works for the most part. You know I'm going to be the impartial host during the rounds and picky during the judging. Sorry about that DX It makes it more fair to me.

You know, I really hope I make it far in this round. Not so much for the actual fact of making it far (although that's great), but because otherwise I'd feel weird still coming in here, but I love this thread. ;-;

And I think I'm just going to go ahead and submit. Everyone seems to like it, so I'll just go with it.

Seiki, be happy! PM is so popular!!
xD

Oh, Is it true that Project Runway isn't on Bravo anymore? Is there going to be another season?

And that is 198798% fair Seiki. Why should you apologize?
