Yep, I'm an associate editor (magazine) and what I consider to be a graphic designer. XP My title is 'associate editor' though.

I started out in journalism in high school too. :D It was super fun, and I'm glad my mom talked me into taking the J-1 class. I was hesitant at first, but I took to it like a fish to water. By senior year, I was News section editor (I had the managing editor position stolen from me!) and I worked on the yearbook, writing articles and taking photos.

@Sizz- That is SO COOL! :O
I kind of want to take Journalism in college, too, but I'm already planning on double-majoring in Drama and Drawing/Illustration with Choir as an extracurricular. >_>

I have a MA in Publishing and Writing and have freelance edited books (mostly fiction but some nonfiction) for four years. Most of my work right now is actually marketing, but I still do quite a bit of editing.

@Pie: And how's that going? What's it called btw?

@Bria: I started out majoring in Biology (I wanted to work for the CDC), but once I started taking classes, I realized I didn't want to work that hard. So I ended up double majoring in Journalism (magazine emphasis) and Psychology -- got a B.S. for psych and a B.A. for journalism. I knew I'd never do anything with psych, because you basically have to get a doctorate, which I wasn't planning on doing. So I'm glad I picked journalism as my main major because it actually provided me with some marketable skills in the workforce. I will warn you about your major choices -- they're not very practical... :sweat: A lot of my friends got "pointless" degrees and are not doing work that they want to be doing.

But you know, I told my mom I was going to do what I loved, regardless of how much money I make, and I'm glad I did. I love my job and totally don't mind going every day (most of the time). XP So if you really think Drama and Drawing/Illustration is what you want to do, go for it, but be prepared for life to smack you in the face when you graduate. /fairwarning

@Cami: I want to get my master's, but I don't know what I'd want it to be in. Probably business of some sort, unless they have a specific journalism business master's. I want to be a magazine publisher when all is said and done -- I hope to start my own magazine one day. But by that time, paper mags will be non-existent and we'll be reading it online. XP

I said Sizzla. I swear. You're just reading it wrong. D:

Your duties piqued my interest because it sounds like something I could do with the degree I'm working on that isn't specifically advertising. Everyone always asks me what I plan to do with a Communication Design degree. "What is that? Like advertising?" >>;

I find templates fascinating, if at times restrictive. xD We worked with that a little in my Typography class this past semester, and a little bit into magazine layouts. I dunno if I'd want to do it for a living.

Hi Pie, Bri. :3 How goes it?

@Cami
Your roommate's comment made me laugh. xD Poor Mister Nameless Republican.. I'll vote for him! D:

Sizz: No reason to bother getting a master's unless you know what you're going to do with it. If you're going to create your own magazine, then a business MA would be a great idea.

@Anthony: Communication Design? I can imagine what that would be like. What school is it in? J-school or art/design? There were some design kids from the art school in my magazine design class, so it was interesting to see their mindblowing designs. XP We didn't learn the same design in journalism school, that's for sure! XD Templates are totally restrictive, but you need them for consistency. I do think feature articles should have a unique layout though, and our magazine does have a slightly different layout for features. If it were my magazine though, I'd make it our features a lot more graphic. They'd look cool, even if they were just articles about copy machines.

I WISH I would have taken a class ONLY about typography. I freakin' love typefaces/fonts! It's really an amazing thing to realize that someone out there designed the fonts you use, and they spent a lot of time and effort on them. I wish I could design fonts. That'd be sweet. I get a newsletter at work from myfonts.com that features the font of the month, along with other cool font articles.

@Cami: Yeah, I think business would probably be best, but I don't think I'd go back to school until I've really decided that that is the route I want to take. You never know how things will change. I didn't expect to be working at an association magazine at this time in my life. XP

But yeah, business would be good for publishing or creating a mag. All publishers do is work with numbers -- at least all the magazine publishers I've known have been that way. There's nothing creative about the job, which is kinda unfortunate.

Do you have an idea of what kind of magazine you'd want to create? You're thinking webzine, right?

My original dream (and the magazine I designed for my final project in magazine design class) was an electronic music magazine. I had a passion for it at the time, but now I don't know what I'd want to do. I kind of got out of the music scene and nowadays I'm too busy listening to old music that I love... XP I used to DJ at my college radio station, so I was always hip to the new music that was coming out. Not so much anymore. T_T I miss that job!

I love music. I'm always looking for new bands. I make fun of my roommate because she doesn't listen to anything made this century.

@Sizz- lol, I know what you mean. I would totally be a scientist if it were easier! :lol:
And I know my major choices aren't at all practical, but I can't really see myself doing anything besides performance arts or visual arts. :sweat: Or being an author/journalist, I guess, but I get such bad writer's block. >_>

@Cami- That sounds so great. I'd totally love your job. xD

*flops in*

Sorry for not being on in... two days, I've come down with an awful case of pneumonia and I pretty much only stop sleeping so I can go to class and not get kicked out the first week... (some professors drop students who don't show up on the first day so they can take waitlisted students)

If you wanna post results without my judging, that's cool, but if you're okay with waiting I guess I can scrounge something up...

:cry:

Edit: catching up, what's this about a rollback? *confused*

Keyori: Jelly accidentally deleted a rather large thread, which resulted in a lot of missing gold, so there was a rollback, which resulted in all activity of the day being erased. This, unfortunately, caused two of the judges's results to be deleted.

It's slow. School started for all of us, so it's been lying a tad bit dormant.
We also don't have a pixelist.

It's going to be called Jinksu Online.
We have a staff only test site right now.

Nope. The rollback screwed things up and I'm still waiting on scores and comments from a couple of the judges.

A couple of them? So more than just Keyori?

Have you PMed them in case their judging was lost in the rollback and they didn't realize it?
