EDIT: Will judges mark me down if I cosplay as the main character of the painting, but added my own touches? Cause the portrait I'm doing has nothing on the neck or head, and it looks...empty, to me. D:

I know some paintings, but the artists to choose from dont have appealing work to me

I was contemplating on doing the painting where it shows a bunch of guys cutting up some prisoner for anatomical research, and making a black and red avi, but it's too...dark and scary for me.

Personally for me, though, I would prefer an avatar which portrays the essence of the artwork instead of a direct cosplay. There are a few things I would say about the WIPs I'm seeing, but then the comments might be too biased based on personal preference so I'll keep quiet. lol

Essence...so for example, you'd rather an avatar that utilizes the color and tone of the painting, as opposed to attempting to convey the painting through more literal means?

Not precisely. If by 'literal means' you mean the actual representation of an item or object, say for example, take any of Goya's later works, perhaps in one of his series commonly known as Disaster's of War - the name tells what the images are about -, you could use blood, an angry look, weapons (swords), severed heads (courtesy of Channah) etc. So long as it relates to the work because it fits right, even if it doesn't exist in the actual piece itself.
When I say cosplay, I meant really going precisely how the art is, piece by piece, without taking into account the balance and appeal on how the precise items would look.

In short, while keeping the theme to heart, also keep in mind that this is still an avatar contest.

Or to express the mood that the painting is portraying?

I can say...I would like either the portrayal of the mood, or the cosplay, I would be happy with either. It DOES not have to mean you have to be matchy matchy. If the task is better suited to a complete mismatch then totally go for it. I think a few of you in specific where concerned about the balance and matchiness in the last round which over all hurt you. Just wanted to let you guys know xP

So did they end up too matchy for your tastes? Or was there too much of a lack of balance? o-o

I felt that I HAD to balance mine, cause I was trying to portray mottled-ness. xD

And Windy, personally, I found that in the first round, there was one or two which managed to pull of the theme well with good balance. However, there were more who made it worse by trying to match and balance the colours evenly. What could otherwise have been a great entry, became just sub par because there were many unnecessary items equipped.

Cause the judges are very different...I know someone who likes layers, one who would prefer literal translations, one that enjoys odd interpretations, one who rates creativity...
