It all started in high school. No, I guess it started before that, in elementary school, when that music teacher handed us recorders and told us to play them. I was good at it. After that, I played the clarinet, but my mom dug the recorder out of my closet now and again and made me play it. I didn't object too much.

In high school I lost all interest in the clarinet. I was tired of the callus on the side of my thumb, I was tired of the taste of reeds. And my high school had a chior! I'd gladly abandon that drated thing to be able to sing, and learn to sing better! I'd only bothered with the clarinet in the first place because how was I to know I'd love acting? I barely remember doing that play in kindergarten.

My junior year I realized that I missed it, playing an instrument. Like it or not, it ran deep in my blood, as deep as the singing, and I couldn't abandon it lightly. So I dug the recorder out of the back of my closet myself this time, and sat down to learn some slightly more complicated music. I'd practice at lunch, or after school.

And that's when I met Marilynn.

The first time she saw me she pointed straight at me and said "You're the elf!" I was rather confused, until she said I was the elf because I played a pipe all around campus. I was quick to tell her it was a recorder, but she still called me Elf. It seemed I had a new nickname. Well, at least it was a good one.

The next year my high school started selling the most evil chocolate muffins. I'd never had anything so good, and I haven't found their equal since. They were cheap. I could live off ramen another year, if I could just have my muffins. Marilynn saw this, and proclaimed that I was the Magical Muffin Elf! It stuck to me like glue. And I liked it. I like muffins. I still don't undertand the magical, or the elf, entirely, but you know, those muffins were magical, and if I was to be anything other than human, I would undoubtably be an elf.
