Just a Britcom. Wiki. Seemed like it was an amusing show, but I only saw two episodes.

I agree with Lost and Cherry about River Song.. she does annoy me sometimes, just the character herself, or it might just be all the cheesy lines. I am curious about her too, but at the same time I hope they do a really good and not a rushed job of revealing her secret. And that it's not something too obvious. *cough*

Well, as to her being his wife, he has been married before, after all. He's even a father and a grandfather. I think a lot of people tend to forget/ignore it because it just doesn't fit his character, and because of his refusal to get intimate with people.

I must admit, I liked Amy a lot better after watching this interview.

Nahh, I'm fine with the fact that the Doctor had a wife and family back on Gallifrey. In fact, I always imagined that losing them was the reason he became so afraid of getting close to people, y'know? It's like, he's so scared of having to go through that again.

But... River Song? They just don't seem like a good match, to me. Maybe it's just because Alex Kingston is so much older than Matt Smith, though.

It seems natural that at some point they would touch on the topic of the Doctor's family again, but I rather like the idea that one of you came up with, that she's the anthropomorphized TARDIS? Now that's a clever idea, and I would like to see them do it.

I don't know, that seems a bit too weird, I'd probably be irritated if that was what she was.

And I agree with Lost, I think the Doctor's fear of intimacy is due to everything he lost. It's almost like he feels he deserves to be alone and miserable. I mean, he does have quite a bit of guilt/melancholy/etc. over the Time War and all its casualties. Another part is probably due to the fact that they're human and he's Time Lord, as was explored with Rose. He knows that they can spend their whole life with him, but he can never do the same with them. And their life would be over in the blink of an eye for him, they'd be gone in no time by his standards, and that would be too much. Basically boils down to that he's too afraid of losing when he's already lost so much.

Well, it's not the first time it's been done in a work of fiction...
Take Tsunami, from the original Tenchi Muyo!

Quote:
These trees were sapient and powerful beings who would 'partner' with certain Jurians, providing them with great power and long life-spans. They were also the central core of Jurian ships, acting as power source and computer core, far more powerful than anything else at the time, thus allowing Jurai to become a galactic superpower.... Tsunami-fune is known to be "the most powerful of all ships" (quote from episode 6, 'We Need Tenchi!)... Tsunami-fune has demonstrated matter-transportation, multiple-environment generation, energy-based weaponry and sub-space travel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami_(Tenchi_Muyo!)

It actually made for a quite effective character.

Yes, the one from a few years ago, Ryo-oh-oki? Apparently he "picks" someone in it, even.
'Course, he already technically picked someone in Shin Tenchi Muyo, but she wasn't part of the original harem, so that's never gone over well.

*just got finished writing the worst, most ill-written essay she has ever composed* Ugh, I am not proud of that. But I don't have the TIME to go look for any more film adaptations of A Midsummer Night's Dream! Only two versions seem to be available anywhere, anyway. I can't believe I decided to write a compare/contrast essay on all the different film versions that have been made over the years. Finding them is not as easy as it seems.

Cherry: Yup.... Nobody ever wants to be the first one to go. We all secretly hope our significant other will outlive us, so we won't have to deal with the pain of losing them. (By the way, is that selfish or selfless? Wanting to die first? I mean, it sounds selfless, but when it comes down to it, having the stay behind is the hard part. Right? *philosophical*)

----------

P.S. Why are we talking about picking girls out of harems? That's why I hate anime.....

@ Lost on harems: Yes, haha. It's become such a trope, and misogynistic as it's gone along. But Tenchi was the first of that kind, and was somewhat more varied in it's interaction between characters. Before the molds were dried, if you will.

@ Lost on essays: Oh god so much of my college output was crap. And I knew it while I was doing it, and felt shame, but still didn't have it in me to make more effort. The classes weren't more challenging than what I was used to, but my schedule was murder.

If I'm not mistaken, Negima falls into that category as well. Poor little Negi...he's only ten, teaching English, and is getting hit on by every person in the class he teaches (which is all girls)!

IS THAT WHY THERE WERE TALKING TREES IN THAT SHOW? OH MY GOD, THANK YOU, I'VE BEEN WONDERING SINCE I WAS EIGHT.

Lost - Do you mean that you can't find copies of the various film adaptations or that you can't find the existence of more?

I dislike anime too...

@ Cherry. Haha, yes, that's why. Tenchi is one of the animes that relies most heavily on Shintoism, when you really look at the components of the story. Kami, the divine spirits of Shintoism, can be found in almost any natural thing, as well as man-made things, if they are of sufficient merit or age.

I watched some episodes when I was a kid. They weren't in the right order, and I think the show was meant to be watched chronologically, so it made absolutely no sense to me, but I just loved it. Since then it occasionally pops into my head and makes me wonder, but previous attempts at researching just what the hell was going on in that show turned up nothing.

Tenchi is what got me interested in anime, to be honest. And it reminds me that, no matter how god awful some (of the more current ones) can be, it's capable of going in interesting directions.

I've been burned too many times by anime to even try, at this point... I think it's some kind of cultural difference, like how some Americans "don't get" British comedy.

I'm afraid I can't. I've caught lots of bits of animes before, but I don't know what they were, since I didn't always watch the whole episode. I didn't need to, it was all just... very corny, kind of like the dialogue was written by a fourteen year old. I did watch two full episodes of Ghost in the Shell, and part of the Animal Crossing movie (subtitled by fans), but that's not really many examples, and makes it sound like I'm judging too broadly. I've seen more than that, I just couldn't stomach it enough to watch the whole thing and I forgot the names. I also watched some anime as a kid, but since I was... well, a kid, I can't really go off that.

EDIT: I think most of them were on Adult Swim though, if that helps?

And I mean, I could be wrong, maybe I've only caught really awful ones, but I get the impression that most have the... indescribable quality that really really bugs me.

Adult Swim has had some decent ones, Ghost in the shell was pretty good. It's also had the likes of Cowboy Bepop, Samurai Champloo, Paranoia agent, Death Note, all fine works. And it had Inuyasha, which, well, was certainly engaging, whether or not it was a masterpiece.

Don't forget about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Bleach, and YuYuHakusho. Ah....YuYuHakusho and Inu-Yasha, two of the anime I grew up with.

Grell, you're weird..........Sorry, watching Black Butler.
