The Doctor must have been eavesdropping on me at one point.
You see, I detest cheap money making ploys, and I do enjoy Harry Potter, both the books and the films. However with each new film not only would they release the film itself (and collecting them one by one would be the most expensive way to do it), yet they would release a 'new special edition box set' ... each.. bloody... time... After Half-Blood Prince I said 'Finally, after the next one I can finally purchase the damn set'... wrong again... because of course they made the final film in two parts.
Anyways, back to whovian land, my roomate came to me when I woke up on Chrimstmas morning and said he found a small package on the balcony of our flat... and it was wrapped up with a neat little card (typed in English as opposed to any other languages) that simply said "To [MYREALNAME] From The Doctor"
And it was Harry Potter Complete 8 Film Collection. :) ... I need a Tardis emoticon.
I haven't tried yet, but I can't watch anything at the moment my modem is going bad & keeps dropping the connection.
Too bad I can't jump ahead a few days & get my new modem. It's supposed to be shipped out today.
Damia Flagg: Greetings. Now, as a preface I have been absoltely, positively horrid at refraining from out 'pain-ing' people lately. It is a nasty, disgusting habit that is far below me that should be dropped because it gets neither parties anywhere except in more pain. However, after two months of depression, all kinds of medication weridness, and recent sexual molestation that the good news now is I am up to 25% functioning capacity, let me offer this:
First, you are not alone. I have yet to see The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe. However, BBCAmerica's on-demand is VERY funny and they released 'the next doctor', both parts of 'the end of time' then 'doctor who christmas carol' but not the 2011, until yesterday I believe, but I'm having my roomate watch them in order.
Also, I had my external hard drive which has ALL OF MY DOCTOR WHO, TORCHWOOD (and images relating to them) fail on me. I was okay because my main machine is fairly top of the line and fairly new... and it died on me in such a way that it took my former IT mentor/boss/friend from my university to come to my house and though even he could not 'solve' it we did a factory settings system restore and I am painstakingly making my machine usable again.
Also, my last resort was a machine I have in 'then nursing home', a 2002 model dell running off 256MB of RAM... it takes 20 minutes to start up and 10 minutes to start internet explorer, then another 5 minutes to turn on AIM, keeping in mind I use what I believe is the oldest version that still works on both that machine and this... version 5.2. something, copyright 2003, upon re install two options were either modem or LAN, and if you didn't dial-up it said use the LAN option even though technically wireless connections are over a 'modem' too, just wireles modems. Also there was a checkbox asking if it would like me to install Netscape as my default browser, but I digress at this point... I basically had no computers and was also very dangerously falling off of my 'head-medications' after two very solid months of depression and being beaten right before christmas.
Happy holidays to me I suppose -_-. On the strangest note though, I'm not suicidal anymore.
I haven't watched the Christmas special yet either. I don't have an excuse, though. Every time I think to I get distracted by something else. I tend to be this way with shows and I don't know why. The day before a new episode comes out, I'll be so excited, but then I wait a week to watch it.
Arrrgh! Either my internet or Mene's servers crashed for a minute there and it ate my reply! :(
Anyway, how did people enjoy the event? This hangout thread wasn't as active as usual for events, which surprised me a bit (I figured more people would be fawning over the xmas special) but I guess I didn't help much either, so.
I'm getting really super excited about my idea for a Master's degree project. Which is surprising because two weeks ago I was dead set on Not Wanting Further Education At All (or at least Not Anytime Soon), but I guess I knew already I can never stay in one place for too long, and as my co-worker so helpfully pointed out to me, it will mean two years of doing whatever I want, not just working some job to earn money to live and not having time for anything else. But yes. I got a book from the library today to start off my research and it is so well written and engaging, I can hardly put it down! Who knew I'd actually miss doing research this much?
I saw and enjoyed the christmas special, but I don't think it left too much to be discussed. It was kind of awkward, considering the episode that precedes. I imagine watching them back to back would be a bit jarring, it's sort of a weird contrast. I mean, I know the Christmas special is going to magical and happy, it was just kinda weird.
Good luck on your Master's! And hey, it's great that your research is actually enjoyable! I'd imagine you're much more likely to retain it then. :) What are you getting your Master's in (if you don't mind telling, that is)?
I agree with Cherry on the Christmas special, a bit weird.
SPOILERX
The end with the father... it's Christmas, it's supposed to be heartwarming, but I felt the ending kind of cheapened it. Especially in light of last year's special. The young woman didn't get a reprieve from death's clutches. And wasn't there a wounded man on that plane? That wasn't resolved at all. Not enough Bill Bailey either.
I think this is a general enough of a statement that I don't need to put it behind spoiler tags, but I thought last year's Christmas special was better. However, this is just my humble opinion.
However, this episode does support the theory that many developed with 'Stormageddon' that Eleven would make a good Dad.
Yeah, I agree with all of you, and especially Biggles. I guess last year's one was just too good, this one felt like a bit of a let down.
Thanks Cherry! I'm doing a Master's in either Fine Art or Photography. I've got a BA in Fine Art Photography so I think I should be able to get into either one. I've only found one university offering an MA in Fine Art in Stockholm though, which is a bit daunting, especially since it's the most prestigious art school in Sweden. I'm going to have to do a kick ass application if I want to get in. And I don't think I mentioned what my project was about either, haha. My graduation project last year was focused on shamanism (if you've visited my website it's there) and I want to continue with that theme and expand on it. The book I got is about Shamanism in Ancient Europe. :)
I love the concept of that project, Pat! Looks like there was a silver lining to all the riots - they made for an incredible backdrop.
knowing the success you've had before with your photography, and how articulate you are with your thoughts and ideas, I think you have a very good chance of getting into the school of your choice. Fine art seems like it would be a good idea, it would give you a wider scope, familiarizing you with the mechanisms behind all kinds of mediums. Though, in the end, you have to pick what works for you.
I've been tooling around with an idea for an academic project myself, ever since I started collecting material on the subject for my own leisurely benefit: Depictions of Ophelia in the art world, especially in the 19th century. I've found almost nothing on it in a scholarly or printed sense. The only book I've come across on it was a catalogue done for a wee show at a college museum (which I duly bought) So little interest for such a dynamic subject. We'll see if I ever do anything with it.
Yeah, I wondered what happened to the other people on the plane too! I kept waiting for them to be mentioned, but... it was completely forgotten. That was a very strange oversight, not one that I would expect from Doctor Who at all.
Lack of much being published on the matter is all the more invitation for you to try to put something together, I'd think! The void's there for you to fill. :)
ljos - Best of luck getting into that university! And I like your project. :)
Thank you both! I would like to do Fine Art because of more options, I'd like to learn more about other methods and I'm already making jewellery and things, wanting to do more charms and magic-related items, so that would work to my advantage. I'm trying not to get too excited because I swear when I get excited about things they always fail in some way, but finding the balance between not getting too excited and still enthusiastic enough to put lots of work into it.. argh! Oh well, I did some test shots today for a project I'm hoping to include and I've got a couple of days off work next week so hopefully the ball will keep rolling. :)
And that surprises me that it's so difficult to find information on that subject! It would definitely be a worthwhile project and sounds like something you're very interested in, so I say go for it if you get the chance.
@Lostin Shall I ever come across someone named Alonso I will get an "Allons-y, Alonso!" into the conversation. I shan't be able to help myself. LonelyOtaku- My roomate showed me that one a day or two ago. He follows most pages of the cheezburger network fairly religiously.
I've been tempted to watch Sherlock, but the fans keep scaring me off it. Like, I can't tell if it's a legitimately good show or if it's just stupid fangirl fodder.
No, it's actually pretty good, in my opinion. Yes, there is an enormous amount of fangirl silliness on Tumblr and what have you, but I just steer clear of those sites, haha. I mean, there are just as many Doctor/Master fanfictions as there are Sherlock/Watson fanfictions, I assure you. All in all, I prefer this adaptation to the Robert Downey Jr. movies. And he is someone who I'd be tempted to fangirl. xD
There's a certain element of class that I've seen in all the DW stuff I've come across on tumblr (again, that's just what I've come across) While you sometimes see that in the Tumblr Sherlock Fandom as well, it's... well, there's a lot of inanity there.
