I find that quite disrespectful. But I shouldn't say anything because I am quite so to my own grandparents. I'm sure you would slap me in the face too with how I speak to them. Not in a sense of profanity but as in shouting back without tacking in "grandma" at the end. In Vietnamese, if you don't say the person's position, it's disrespectful. For example, if I'm older, you would call me older sister at every end of the sentence. For manga readers, you would understand what I'm saying. Senpai, -kun, so on.

That is horrible. People really have no respect for one another these days.
I used to ride a bus home and part of the rout was by a hospital and if I got on at the right time I would make the rush home form the hospital that day. And most nights I wouldn't have a seat to start with so I never really paid any one else any attention (I was a foreign so trying to blend in was my goal most nights >>;;; ) But one night this old lady got on huffing and puffing as she pulled her self up the bus steps and I had a seat and with out a thought moved for her. She was so over joyed that she thanked me and when I got off told me to take care walking the rest of the way home. It made my night. I found too that no matter how tired I was and how good sitting felt, when I gave it up to some one who needed it more I didn't mind as much.
Here int he US I tend to smile at people when ever I have the chance, not to mention the simple thank you. None of the kids who eat at the schools cafe say that ever to the people who work there. Funny thing is that it bites most them when they want some thing(more Juice(Our juice machine runs out really fast) or when they run out of Jelly or other Just the side dish) that isn't out that night. Where as most of the time I get the item when I ask....funny what being kind can do for ya.

Sadistix_Love_ I get the honorifics completely, I would be called Onesan by my littlest of host brothers. And to little old ladies I allways use Obasan. Been kind of hard not having that system back here as I draw blanks on what to use with people when I don't know there name....

Those people are evil!!! That just shows what the world is coming to! (ok, no save the world speech) but really! That's just unacceptable, that people have lost respect for old people!
