Same here. C: Having a grand time plotting the country Tadeusz's family is from... Read a book recently, and the main character was saying she didn't understand how Russian people came up with their nicknames, but I really liked how they were very different from and just vaguely similar to the orginal name. Since the names, language, accent, and a few other aspects of Tadeusz's country are borrowed from/influenced by Romania, Poland, and Russia anway, I thought that might be a fun addition to the culture. ;D
I've only thought of two so far, but I'm working on it. o: D'iala is probably going to be affectionately called Dalka by some of Nami's younger cousins. c:

Ugh. I'm reading about banned books. It NEVER ceases to piss me off.
Quote:
The Diary of Anne Frank Anne Frank by Anne Frank
Banned in Lebanon for "portray[ing] Jews, Israel or Zionism favorably."
|
Quote:
"Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury
West Marion High School in Foxworth, a rural Mississippi town, is the place where recent events aimed at censorship occurred. The book, Fahenreit 451, was on the reading list for several of the English classes. However, after a parent complained to the superintendent about the use of the word "God damn" in the book, the book was removed from the required reading list.
|
Quote:
Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
This is a perennial favorite of censors and has been banned in the U.S. and Australia. In 1960, a Tulsa, OK teacher was fired for putting the book on the 11th grade reading list. The teacher was reinstated, but the book was permanently removed from teaching programs. A Minnesota high school administration was attacked for allowing the book in the school library.
|
I... just... really? I mean, REALLY? e_e I want to punch people sometimes. And I know my school has had parents try to get books like TKAM and Of Mice and Men taken off the reading list due to language. I'm glad the people who freak about it get smashed down by teachers, students, and other parents whenever it happens.

Banning books is just stupid. >_> It doesn't matter what the content in the book it, books should not be banned, period. Plus, the reasons are always, always retarded. o_o I'm beginning to think that you can only ban a book if the grounds for doing so are mindnumbingly stupid.

I totally agree. Book banning is just... it makes me ANGRY. It's a person's freedom of expression, I really feel like saying, 'dearie, not everyone is going to write about fluff and things you agree with. Grow up, and let the authors and books alone.'
ESPECIALLY when I see books and authors I like on banned book lists or listed as books that people have tried to ban. That absolutely makes my blood boil. Even books I hate being on lists like that gets me up in arms. e_e

Pffft, I believe I shall start saying that whenever I hear people agree with banning books. o_o And if they try to pull a "But Ickle Timmy-!" I'll tear 'em a new one. Only not really, but I can dream.

'Tis a lovely dream. :'D
I really need to read more books that people want banned... I've read a decent-ish amount, but it never hurts to have more. Also, it makes one look smarter when someone talks about wanting that book banned, because 95% of the time, they haven't read it and have no understanding of the true nature of the book.
"OMG Lolita says it's okay for grown men to have sex with 12 year olds!"
"OMG Lolita is about a freakin' insane pedophile who gets thrown in jail and feels forever guilty for robbing a girl of her childhood, as well as highlighting the negative, tragic, awful consequences of his actions!"
"OMG To Kill a Mockingbird says it's okay to be racist!"
"OMG To Kill a Mockingbird is about standing up against racism!"
:sarcasm:
And so on.

Exactly how the hell is To Kill a Mockingbird even remotely racist? o_o It portrayed how black people were treated in that time period excellently, or so I thought, assuming I'm not just batshit crazy. The author wasn't marching around and screaming that it's okay to be racist. *headdesk* Gods I hate people sometime. x_o

I know! o_o It's really just like... *shakes head* And on the other hand, some people used to want it banned for like, the opposite reason. I'm sure I told you about what happened to my friends grandma when she refused to stop teaching it. I just... *twitch* e_o
I do have a pin that says "I read banned books" though. :'D

Of course, this shouldn't be surprising me. o_o We're turning into a culture where not having a tv/game station/computer in the house is considered child abuse. Why am I expecting them to be reasonable or remotely intelligent when it comes to books?
Haha, that is awesome. :'D

And I'm sneaking on here in the middle of the night because I was so tired once I got home, I just went upstairs and fell asleep within an hour of being home. DX Though, considering how crazy my day was at work, it's understandable. XP Plus, being exhausted all week hasn't helped one bit, either.

I thought I might be more busy this weekend, but I'm pretty much done all that I really needed to do this weekend. Now I just have to plan a time to put my clothes away, and wash my dirty clothes. XP Otherwise, I've already been to the bank and the post office, and now have nothing except my laundry duties to be done for the rest of the holiday weekend. I'm not even sure about any party plans. =(
