Hey, gang.

Over in the books forum, there was a proposal for a book club, and a fair amount of interest. So, I seem to have volunteered to get the ball rolling. There are some things we should discuss, first, though!

First of all, what genre are people interested in? Should we read the kind of books we'd get assigned if this were an English class, or are people interested in science fiction / fantasy... what would you like to read?

Secondly, how long should we give between announcing the book, and opening discussion on it? There was mention made of two weeks, is that a long enough time that everyone can read the book, yet short enough that people who read quickly still have things to say about it?

Is there anything else you'd like to address as we form the club?

I would say the amount of time between announcing the book and opening discussion would depend on the length of the book and how dense of a topic it is.

Finally, I've found the thread.

Anyway, looks like siaasgn has answered your question already, so I won't bother because I agree with her. =3 Personally, I will read anything. I read Fiction mostly, but I will have no trouble reading Non-Fiction, and Fantasy is one of my favorite things to read, so that's alright with me as well.

I hope this Book Club becomes a big hit, because I would love to discuss books with other people, and find out who likes the same things as me; it's a great way to make friends, don't you think?

I know, it was kinda a pain to find, but yeah!

I think that we should just suggest books, regardless of genre, and everyone vote on the ones they want to read. I don't see this being a high brow book group (at least I kinda hope not--I can't re-do AP English, I just can't! I refuse!)

As for length I agree with siaasgn, it should depend on the length of the book.

Well, do y'all want to suggest a first book, or should I just pick something?

Maybe we can all rotate on who gets to pick a book? You can definitely pick the first since you made the thread

I will read anything. Unless you ask us to read Finnegan's Wake. It's on my reading list for myself for the year, but that's just plain torture to read. James Joyce is impenetrable. (I'm attempting a go at it though.)

If you guys want to read Sci-fi I just finished a good book called Interworld by Neil Gaiman.

Oh - another really good Gaiman book is Stardust. :)

Well, okay. I went and looked at my Amazon.com wishlist, to see if there was anything on there that would be suitable. I figure y'all probably don't want to read Highland Swordsmanship: Techniques of the Scottish Sword Masters, or Create an Oasis With Greywater: Your Complete Guide to Choosing, Building and Using Greywater Systems or even The Portland Cement Association's Guide to Concrete Homebuilding Systems (yes, all these things are really on my wishlist, as I do in fact wish to read them).

So that leaves Storm of Steel, and Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. Since Cradle to Cradle is rather spendy, and Storm is probably available at your local bookstore, and may be at your local used book store, I'm going to go with: (Fanfare, please!) Ernst Junger's Storm of Steel, a World War One memoir by a German soldier who participated in the entire war, from 1914 to 1918.

We'll begin discussion in the second week of January!

Quite so! Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries!

Darlin', there's a whole forum about books. This thread grew out of a thread there, where people were saying they wanted a more organized book club. So here it is. Ta-da!

Well poo! The local library does not have it and the college library does, but it's out until much later then the time allotted. I'm going to have to sit this one out. I just don't have the funds to buy books at the moment. Oh well, I hope you guys have a spirited discussion and I might do like I did in High School, listen for about a day then put in my two cents having not read the material. :sarcasm:

My library doesn't have Storm of Steel or anything by Ernst Junger. I see it was published in German in 1920.

Maybe do a quick availability check before choosing next time? Maybe something a little less eccentric? If eccentric, something we all can find?

It's not all that eccentric... the last revision in German was published in the late 80s, and it was translated into English in the early years of this century. It was at the second bookstore in town I went to.

Are we ready to start talking about it?
