Well let's see if I can explain it a bit better. If you get sprayed by a shunk you are unlucky, right. So being skunked = unlucky.

If you lose out on something you're unlucky.

losing out = skunked= unlucky

That's godawful! I've never had the pleasure of knowing the brunt aroma of a skunk, but I don't know that I could imagine the full force. I imagine I could easily disown my dog if that happened, though.
