Konichiwa! This is TaiyoTsuki, and I'm a member of NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps). The reason I created this thread was to find other JROTC/ROTC Cadets and give them a place to hang out and chat about what's going on in school, with their units, what events they've got planned for their units, or to just goof off with fellow Cadets!

So, pull up a chair, beanbag, or anything to sit on in here and have fun! (No uniforms nessicary.)

My brother was a JROTC cadet, but I never was. Though I respected my school's unit. There was something ritualistic and ceremonial in the colorguards at assemblies. It really caught my eye.

I know. I'm not on color guard, but I gotta admit, they look dang good. I'm on drill, athletic, orienteering, and air rifle teams, and I'm gonna be the academic team commander. And probably their craziest team commander ever!

I bet. Sadly, half my school's JROTC are also out anime nerds. Swanee and Scuba Jon, especially.

Mind me hanging out here, even if I'm not a member of the corps?

It's ok if you're not a Cadet. I joined late myself. My PE class was full of idiots and prostitute wannbees, so Freshman year I joined NJROTC six weeks late. Everyone was saying I would be out at semester, but look at me now! I'm on four (gonna be five) teams, and the assistant admin officer! :D
On the anime nut deal, I confess...I'm a complete anime nut.

Just out of curiousity, what is JROTC? Is it something like the scouts?
(Please forgive my lack of knowledge about them. xD")

But from the response to this thread, there doesn't seem to be many of them around Mene, or those who visit Nations, at least. o_o

Kinda-sorta. JROTC was spawned from ROTC, which is in college. How JROTC got started was someone got a really good idea; make a version of ROTC for high school students. And thus, the JROTC units were born. There are four JROTC branches (one for each service): AJROTC, NJROTC, AFJROTC, MCJROTC. College ROTC is the same, except for the Marine Corps ROTC is combined with the Navy ROTC.

What the acronym ROTC stands for is Reserve Officer Training Corps. I'm in NJROTC right now, and I might go into NROTC in college.

As for what they do, here's a quick explanation: ROTC is an elective that can be taken during high school and/or college. It helps build self-discipline, confidence, independence, and citizenship. They've got several teams, depending on which branch. They vary between all the programs, so I'm not completely sure about the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps programs.

The teams for ROTC--or at least for Navy ROTC--are drill team, air rifle team, athletic team, academic team, orienteering team, and color guard. I'll go into a little detail about all the teams.

Drill team are the ones who spin the rifles. That's called armed exhibition. Unarmed exhibition is just that; exhibition drill without the rifles. Then there's armed and unarmed regulation.
But there's more to drill team than just spinning a rifle in a parade. They go to competitions too, where they--like all school teams--compete to get the highest score possible and with a trophy. The catagories are unarmed IDR, armed IDR, unarmed ex., armed ex., color guard, new cadet drill squad, and maybe an academic test, depending on the meet.

Color guard are the ones who have the flags flanked by rifle carriers, and possibly saber-carriers. The color guard usually tags along with the drill team to drill meets in order to compete in the color guard event.

Academic team basically takes tests. I know that doesn't sound very exciting, but trust me; the studying pays off. I should know, I'm the academic team commander for my school's unit. Often times the academic team will tag along with the drill team and color guard to drill meets if there's an academic event. Other than tagging along to drill meets, the academic team also takes the national academic exam and participates in postal competitions.

Air rifle team is often the team you'll see most cadets going out for. The reason? They'll get to shoot a rifle. It's just an air rifle, but it can still cause damage if the bullet hits a person. That's why extreme caution is practiced on the range. You must have self-control and a steady head in order to be on air rifle without endangering other Cadets. That's also why it's such a hard team. In fact, it's really the hardest team I'm on-but that's only my opinion.

Athletic team is a lot like track or cross-country. They are the muscle side the unit. When the athletic team goes to meets there are three catagories; sit-ups. push-ups, and a relay run. Other schools may have other events as well, but those three are the ones you'll find at every athletic meet.

And finally, orienteering team. As the name suggests, the orienteering team are the ones with an sense of direction. Like athletic team, being an orienteering team member takes athletic traits. Because the teams are given a time limit to find all the checkpoints, you've got to be able to at least jog to the next point without stopping if you want to place. After you get past the burrs, poison ivy, and the occational pissed-off skunk, it's pretty fun. Sometimes though no teams will come in at their designated time limit. Those are the really hard courses that everyone dreds.

So there you have it; a brief overview of the ROTC and JROTC units. Or at least as much as I know. If you want to know more about them from a more professional point of view then try googling them. Mind you, I'm only in NJROTC, so I don't know everything about the program, but I do know enough to be able to give an explanation.
