I like them either way but at times it gets creepy. The way they're drawn and stuff.

hmmm...damn xDDD I can't vote because I like both actually. I mean...I don't like the beefy beefy anime guys that are totally incorrect anatomically (like some of the characters from DBZ). You know? I do like "buff" guys...just not to the point of ridiculousness. How I picture it is a guy who looks like he DOES work out some...like maybe 2 times a week or so...doing things such as lifting some weights, the tread mill, etc. But no body builder like people for me please.
And I do like Bishis too <3 pretty boys are just....*drools*...I can't think of how to word it...I just really, really like them. I can't explain it.
I can't decide on just one or the other. Both manly men and the pretty boys have their appeal...but a character's personality plays a lot in what I think of the character.

Pretty boys are nice. But I also love "manly" guys too. Personally I like guy characters that are equally feminine and masculine. :) But then again I sort of love the crazy characters like Grell, Viral, Neuro and so on...err. Wait those three all have sharp teeth and are evil. O__o" Err never mind, I just like villain characters. XD

It depends on what the series is if its Fruits Basket than pretty boys all the way. But if it's Bleach than it has to be the manly men with the few pretty boys. To me that is how it has to be but than again things change and I could be showed up or wrong.

I would pick both. I mean, it depends which character I liked and etc. Though IRL I would choose buff guy. I mean, they at least have to have a decent face and body. >>;; Ehh...Well I also like the pretty boy IRL too. As in Korean Artist are hot. But AJ is buff and Asian and HAWT! >>; Okay, enough talking about Korean artist Wandy.

I like both, and it really depends on the character itself, not just the looks. Some overly "pretty" types can be very annoying as well which just makes the looks part not matter much. Some of the "manly" characters can be very appealing with the way they act though too. I guess mostly it depends on the personality, just like real life.... a guy can be verrrry great looking but if he has no personality it won't matter how good he looks. lol

it really depends on the character they portray....
i love the pretty men who seems to be pretty outside but is really evil in the inside....i seem to always gravitate towards the evil or misguided but totally hot villain....
but manly men are also okay as long as they're not overly buff that they almost look deformed

Haha, well I always heard the Gundam Wing boys called the "pretty boys" back in the day but if you compare them to let's say - Lelouch and Suzaku from Code Geass, Gundam Wing boys are far more manly. Of course, that probably has to due with the art style since CLAMP did the character designs for Code Geass.
There's some really manly guys I like though - Gene from Outlaw Star, Junpei from Those Who Hunt Elves, and Trunks from Dragon Ball Z. (Trunks of course was a pretty boy but the guy had some muscles too!)

For just visual appeal, it depends quite a bit on the artist. I like buff manly men and bishies in certain styles, but there are others where the way the artist has drawn them, I don't find either particularly appealing, from a purely visual standpoint. But as so many others have said, the personality is what keeps you attracted or drives you away. It has to both be appealing to you and fit the character in one way or another.

I'd like to choose both, but since that's not an option on the poll, I picked pretty boys. I do like manly men though too, depending on how "manly" they are. I'm not too into the overly muscular, like DBZ, but I do like guys like you'd see in Trigun, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop.
I like pretty boys because they're pretty and feminine, and I'm attracted to both genders, so I guess that may be part of why I like pretty boys.

I think it depends entirely upon the personality of the character and the anime that they're in. I don't want some overly feminine male, such as say - the uke main character from Gravitation - bubbling around in Hellsing. No. Just no. Now, Hellsing has more " tough " and " manlier " looking men than Gravitation, but at the same time, they're not as many as say - yes, as previously mentioned, the guys from DBZ.
I don't mind the looks of my characters, but only as long as they match up with their personalities - unless they're adorable or funny, or it's meant to be that way, and not just a really horrible shot at trying to be funny, etc - which is hard to eplain and leading me to just ramble on.
I think I probably watch more anime/read more manga with prettier men than I do otherwise - because I think a lot of people enjoy drawing feminine males or it's hat hits well with other females/boys? I`m not exactly sure . . it might also just have something to do with the plot of the anime.
I know I adore art styles like seen in Kuroshitsuji ( which I have yet to watch, but am about to ) - but I also adore the males portrayed in Outlaw Star, Zippy Ziggy, Tokyo Godfathers, Akagi, etc. . which are probably some pretty bad examples, but oh well.
Pretty boys can be okay in moderation, and so can the manlier men. I think an even or decent distribution of both, in various anime/manga is more preferred for me, though.

I enjoy seeing ‘pretty boys’ more than manly men.. Especially if the pretty boys act like manly men, haha. Sebastian from Black Butler is an almost perfect example? Don’t know if many would count him as a pretty boy.
I due tend to read a lot of yaoi though and much, much, much highly prefer to see pretty boys in those than manly men. It’s just so adorable when two pretty boys (one being tougher than the other) get together ^^ Kind of like in real life.

I love effeminate men. <3 They're always the most alluring, charming and wonderfully flamboyant characters! I think they're much more interesting than your usual gun-ho! manly men who think more with their sword arm/physical strength/ego. : D Plus, femme men are just...beautiful and...they are like...aaahh....so...such a turn-on. I love men with long hair and pretty eyes coupled with slender figures and elaborate outfits. <3 Femme men FTW
I don't like yaoi, since like...my friends tease me saying that I do. That or I'll just go straight-up lesbian with my tastes. LOL.. D: I'd be just happy seeing one posing all pretty for me. c.c; I don't need him doing something icky with another guy.

I wonder if it has something to do with age? Older animes seem to have 'buffer' guys in them...but not so much the new ones.

It actually has nothing to do with age really. You see during the beginings of manga most artists (Mangaka, a person who draws manga art for book or tv form) were all men. Men draw their men buff and muscular because that's how men think women like their men. Women however draw their men more lean and while still having some nice abs they don't draw them burly and muscular
Personally I find my preference not to lie in manly or pretty...in fact my liking to a male character are defined in nice hair, a sword, some cat parts or a lover of cats, intelligent and anti-hero ish. (also I tend to go for the one who dies in the series >.> though I never know beforehand...)

As I've gotten old, pretty boys don't seem as attractive. I remember first getting anime at about 8-9ish, I was crazy about characters like Joey Wheeler, but looking back, I don't see a single reason why. XP Now its more of combination of looks and personality. The big gooey eyed characters popular today don't do it for me, but I might be intrested in the series if they have genuine personalities. Likewise, anime/manga with detailed, realistic art, such as Vampire Hunter D and the works of Miyazaki, doesn't have any impact on me if more work is put into looks rather than story or personality. Not saying that I dont enjoy either of what I listed, but just giving an example.
