Well, it depends on the genre of music of which you'd like a suggestion for. XD

My secret is that I ask a random friend to suggest 5 bands to me. I then buy5 random songs from each group and give them a listen. Despite if I like a song or not, I keep it for reference.

But in terms of referring, I tend to follow their likes and dislikes and try to figure something out they may like.
